Woman spends over 4 thousand in Harrods every day for 10 years

AIBU to ask how the fuck? Surely you can only replace furniture, gadgets etc so quickly. Maybe if you bought a brand new outfit everyday? A £1k bottle of champagne? I'm amazed and disgusted in equal measure

(she spent £16mil over 10 years - the equivalent of over £4k per day)

I quite enjoyed visiting Harrods when we were visitng London. The toy section is amazing, and some of the outrageous things, like the jewelled falcon hoods, just astonished me. But it was more like a trip into another world than an ordinary shopping trip.
Oh, the food hall was fun, too. Cronuts!

longwayoff · 12/10/2018 04:40

It's interesting to wander through, everyone should look it over at least once, but unless you have the income of a small country - or have misappropriated the same - keep yer hand on your halfpennies, its not for the likes of us peasants.

lborgia · 12/10/2018 05:08

I'm just wondering if I misread pp who managed the metaphysical leap to those wearing face coverings being responsible for money laundering. As far as I can tell, poster is not basing this on fact, just 1 - she was foreign, 2- she got away with using different names, 3 - easiest way to do this is in disguise, 4- QED, she must've been wearing a burqa.

WTF???

The worst shop lifter ever seen at one of the smarter London shops was white, landed, and double parked her range rover, so STOP with the racist generalisations.

Given that most credit cards just need a pin these days, how hard can it be to use multiple cards without being checked?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2018 05:27

What a joke. The wife of a foreign convicted criminal suddenly has millions and spends it ostentatiously every day for years and yet is only now under suspicion of money laundering.

Yet i am not allowed to pay £100 in cash into my student daughter's account because of Barclays's money laundering prevention rules.

Ridiculous

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/10/2018 05:27

I am thinking it must have got very boring

zippey · 12/10/2018 08:06

Of course she would have known. Why do you think Walter white from breaking bad didn’t suddenly reveal all to his wife? She’s integral, if she wasn’t on board her husband would never have been able to steal the money.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 12/10/2018 08:21

The niqab is illegal in Azerbaijan. Some people are making themselves look very thick with their assumptions.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 12/10/2018 08:32

Some people are making themselves look very thick with their assumptions.

I know. Some people cannot resist showing what arses they are.

FekkoTheLawyer · 12/10/2018 08:37

I assume people are making the leap because of the surname which starts 'Hadji', which most likely means that someone in the family (maybe event way back) did their pilgrimage to Mecca.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 12/10/2018 09:06

Rookie error to spend the whole kit n caboodle in Harrods when you also have Fortnums, Liberty, Harvey Nicks, Peter Jones and Selfridges at your disposal, plus the general designer shop haven that is Mayfair & Kensington to spread your wad about on things like jewellery, art and antiques. Lots of antique dealers & auctioneers, too. DP would blow the lot in Jermyn St like he already does. FWIW Harrods is a bit naff in places but the beauty dept is great!

longwayoff · 12/10/2018 09:26

Liberty is a great place to burn money. Probably my favourite so just as well am broke.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 12/10/2018 09:28

Harvey Nicks any day over Horrads. Oh, and auctioneers. sigh I could burn through millions of pounds so quickly at auctions that I would leave contrails.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 12/10/2018 11:22

I would buy out Harvey Nicks & the Fortnums china dept before finding some lovely antique furniture, hitting up the jewellers and then maybe buy some bags & shoes and all the frivolous but pricey shit I usually deny myself. Blush

FekkoTheLawyer · 12/10/2018 11:24

I'd probably buy art and puppies.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 12/10/2018 11:28

I would be a fixture at Sotheby's et al buying Old Master paintings at the rate of knots. And I would be on first-name basis with everyone at Fortnum and Mason. Plus, Harvey Nicks would role out the red carpet for me.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 12/10/2018 14:12

I haven't even started on Harley St yet Blush

longwayoff · 12/10/2018 15:31

Miss Hathaway-fan, you look wonderful as you are.

DoctorTwo · 12/10/2018 17:29

If she'd used the Mexican drug cartel's money launderer of choice she'd probably have got away with it.

blueshoes · 12/10/2018 17:35

The wife of a foreign convicted criminal suddenly has millions and spends it ostentatiously every day for years and yet is only now under suspicion of money laundering.

The UK had to change its laws recently to be able to issue unexplained wealth orders in order to target people like this person. UK is finally getting tough(er) on money launderers.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2018 19:21

That wasn't quite my point blueshoes.

And I know that there have been checks on any amount of money coming in from abroad for very many years so I cannot understand why this woman has got away with this for years yet grandparents are being stopped from putting 50 quid in their DGC's building society accounts.

It smacks of the same sort of attitude when ordinary people are hounded by the tax man yet massive corporations pay nothing and get away with it.

smiggles · 12/10/2018 20:16

I probably could have done that ten years ago. I used to love it in there. Now it’s just another department store.

TheDarkPassenger · 12/10/2018 20:21

She was clearly buying to sell on so she can clean some money!

not actually read the thread but might go google the story now

FekkoTheLawyer · 12/10/2018 20:26

Do you think she had a stall at Brick Lane market in a Sunday?

"Awriht my dawlins - 'ahve got ere sahm laverly bits a chippn'day-el chairs - a tenner the pair! Oo'll give me five quid for this genuine Picassa print - she's no oil painting missus - but like myself! Laaaaaverly...."

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/10/2018 20:26

I doubt she is the only person to have spent so much money in cash in Harrods

I worked there many people paid in cash especially the wealthy Arabs they would often carry around thousands in cash and buy bulk

It was eye watering at time how much money would be handed over on just a whim

Festivecheer26 · 12/10/2018 20:38

@Rebecca36 - I can kind of see where you’re coming from in the case of a small fry petty criminal whose wife genuinely has no clue. But he gave her THIRTY FIVE credit cards to use - surely you’d be thinking “wait a minute, something’s not right here...”
