To ask you to help me work out what this rash is?

I’ve had it for about a month- little red itchy bumps on my hands that come and go but they are noticeably worse today.
I sometimes get the odd one on my fingers/wrist but they are mainly focused on the area shown in the picture.
A clear fluid comes out when they are popped, but I try not to as this seems to make it more itchy!
I’ve been to the drs 3 times in the last month, mainly because my daughter has also developed a rash on her arms (but they have diagnosed this as eczema and it doesn’t look the same as mine.)
At first they thought mine was contact dermatitis but after treating it with hydrocortisone cream and wearing gloves for cleaning/washing etc it hasn’t improved.
So I went back and they suspected scabies so our whole family was treated head to toe, I washed every item of clothing, bedding, towels etc at 90c - anything that couldn’t be washed (soft toys, sofa cushions etc was bagged up for a week.) Again the rash didn’t improve after that time, so I was told to do the treatment again just in case.
I’m driving myself mad thinking I have scabies as it’s so itchy but I have no track marks, it’s not spreading to any other part of my body and my husband and son don’t have a rash so it’s unlikely.
Please help!

Hard to say, it could be pompholyx (www.nhs.uk/conditions/pompholyx/) but that’s just a guess.

Have you tried seeing a pharmacist? They tend to be good at identifying rashes, and can tell you whether there’s anything OTC that will help.

Underpressureidiot · 11/10/2018 06:45

Could it be hand foot and mouth? I have a very similar rash that I get whenever I’m v stressed or run down, it was diagnosed yonks ago as HFM but I’ve always wondered if it’s something else. It’s v itchy, hope you feel better soon!

ShrinkWrap · 11/10/2018 06:46

There seems to be a rash of people with pompholyx on here! Lots of recent posts with the same thing

counterpoint · 11/10/2018 06:47

That looks like the rash DH had when he trimmed a fig tree and came into contact with the latex these plants produce.

whistl · 11/10/2018 06:54

My mother had that rash for about 10 years when she was in her 40s. It was itchy and got worse. There were lots of bad diagnoses until she discovered that she was allergic to some every day chemical. I think it was washing up liquid or something to do with the garden.
Try wearing gloves for a month whenever you use your hands and see if it goes.

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 08:28

Thanks everyone. I asked the pharmacist for advice on my daughters rash (he also thought eczema) but didn’t want to shout scabies in a busy pharmacy so didn’t mention mine.
Not sure it’s HFM as wouldn’t we have other symptoms - cold/temperature/blisters in mouth etc?
Definitely haven’t been gardening recently (or ever!)

That looks like a mild version of the eczema I get on my hands if they come into contact with certain substances. The fact you used hydrocortisone that had no effect does not necessarily mean it's not eczema/dermatitis, it could just mean you need a stronger steroid to shift it.

hungryhippie · 11/10/2018 08:39

My mum gets that from cutting potatoes and handling raw chicken

BrightLightsAndSound · 11/10/2018 08:46

I went through tue exact same GP process as you ("maybe its dermatitis, oh maybe its scabies").

Turns out it was guttate psoriasis.

Maybe yours is pustular psoriasis? Pics on Google are horrific but yours could be a very mild version.

longwayoff · 11/10/2018 09:09

Are you wearing any cheap nickel jewellery or maybe a watch that touches your skin? My daughter had very similar reaction to a pair of cheapo earrings. I had similar from a watch. If none of the medical things are working, try non contact with any metals next to skin.

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 09:36

It just doesn't look like any rash when I google all of these conditions but I suppose as some of you have said it could be a mild version.
I never wear jewellery (apart from gold wedding ring & engagement ring.)

Underpressureidiot · 11/10/2018 09:59

I never have cold/ulcer symptoms with my HFM (aware it could be misdiagnosed) only the blisters on my hands and particularly my fingers. I’ve never transferred it to anyone either so it could be something else entirely but it looks pretty identical to yours. Agree with others that you should wear gloves when touching chemicals and see if it helps - have you tried taking an anti histimine?

Wonkypalmtree · 11/10/2018 10:01

Is it between your fingers? If so then could be scabies?

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/10/2018 10:11

Pomphylox is just the name given to eczema when it's on the palms of the hands, sides of the fingers and soles of the feet.

The itch and blistering sounds like eczema.

Do you find it's worse when your hands are warm? When I had pomphylox the only way I could sleep was having a bag of frozen peas under each foot.

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 10:13

I've been taking an anti histamine tablet daily for the last week which has really reduced the itch.
I'll try wearing gloves more often but they make my hands sweat which I didn't think would help the situation.
Its in between my thumb and fore finger but not any others - as mentioned previously the dr suggested scabies as my daughter and I had a rash at the same time (although v different in appearance) so the whole family have been treated twice just incase.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/Molluscum-contagiosum/

MrsBethel · 11/10/2018 10:42

Could be some sort of ringworm?

Maybe, maybe not, but if it were that, hydrocortisone would provide temporary symptomatic relief but would ultimately dial down the immune response and allow it to spread.

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 10:59

It is worse when my hands are warm, I quite often run my hands under the cold tap which gives a little bit of relief from the itching.

I took the picture this morning and before I left for work took an anti histamine and rubbed in a thin layer of 1% hydrocortisone - it still feels itchy but the bumps are less red.

LaDilettante · 11/10/2018 11:00

I’m thinking molluscum as well. My DD has it and it’s just about clearing at the moment. Your rash looks very similar to what she had on her knees and slightly up her thighs. She’s got a few spots around one of her armpits. It stays in the same area and takes a long time to disappear. She’s had it for a god three four months now. It clears on it’s own but the fluid inside is contagious so make sure you don’t rub it on other parts of your body. Tea tree oil can help if you apply it twice a day.

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 11:40

I've researched molluscum and my rash doesn't look dome shaped or raised.
However I found this picture which is identical to the rash DD had on her arms a few weeks ago, which has now turned into an eczema rash...interesting! Hmm

I had something similar for a while and someone suggested it could be a sign of mild wheat intolerance.

I don’t eat much wheat now at all - low carb diet - and it’s never come back.

Saladd0dger · 11/10/2018 11:49

Dermatitis herpetiformis? Coeliacs rash

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 12:22

Oh god I hope it's not some sort of intolerance - can they just appear out of nowhere? I love Cake

flowercrow · 11/10/2018 13:08

because of your description of the liquid I wonder if it's dishydrotic eczema?

Namethatrash · 11/10/2018 14:06

It does look similar to the pics of dyshidrotic eczema but when I read about it - it says it effects the palms of the hands and soles of feet and sometimes fingers. But my rash mainly effects the tops of my hands (worse near the thumb/wrist.)
