To spend budgetting loan on something for myself?

For context I am a single mother to a disabled 3 year old getting limited maintenance from her dad. We survive day-to-day on work I do 12 hours a week, IS, CTC and CB. I can’t work more due to DDs SN meaning I need to be able to drop everything and be there for her as she is often admitted to hospital with infections or spiked temperatures. She also has weekly appointments; it’s not unusual to have 3 appointments in a week. Her dad is neighing on useless pops in to her life for a couple of weeks at a time, moans about my apparent ineffective parenting then buggers off again complaining that I’m living the life of riley and he pays way too much maintenance. I spend £300 a month on Nursery fees which is worth every penny as it’s an amazing Nursery which DD loves but I have to work as many hours as I can to keep her there.

I took out a budgeting loan from IS of £800 (the full amount your entitled to). I now don’t need it for what I originally planned to use it for. I can pay it back early but it really doesn’t make much difference as a portion of my IS will be taken every week until it’s paid so either way it goes back into the pot.

So WIBU to use a bit on something for myself? Apart from £5 a month on a phone (which is almost as old as DD which I don’t begrudge at all) I never spend any money on myself. I’m still wearing clothes I bought as a teenager (I’m late 20s now). I’m not thinking a huge amount maybe £100 or so on some new clothes or some nice bath stuff. I am planning to also keep £100 or so back for a decent Christmas present for DD so it’s not all to spend on me.

Prepared to be flamed and told to hand all the money back to DWP.

I wasnt being judgemental, google it yourself. to be paying £5 a week must be in alot of debt. They work out the repayments on how much debt you owe.

ebay is significantly cheaper than buying new.

“They work out the repayments on how much debt you owe.”
Actually they look at income minus expenditure and how much is left over to pay off debts. So a person with more to spare can make higher repayments. OP really doesn’t have a lot to spare Flowers

albert92 · 11/10/2018 20:43

@AnotherEmma they work out everyone's repayments completely different hun not really your business whether she has debt or not

Sorry that was for @GreenLantern53 not you @AnotherEmma

lara09
Logo t shirt is £6.50 x minimum 3 = £18.50
Logo jumper / card is £7 x 3 = £21
Trousers / skirts £4 x 3 = £12
Coat = £20
Shoes = £20
School bag / book bag = £10

That's just over £100 and just 1 child without need for a blazer if older.

Shorts, t-shirt, trainers for PE. We had to have set school tennis or hockey skirt, airtex tahorts, shorts, hockey boots, and optional jumper.

So say £5 for t short, £15 for skirts / joggers etc. £20 for trainers. PE bag. PE socks. £10.

That's £150 without replacements.

And that's 1.

3+ kids or two who wear their uniform hard and it's easily £500

🤣🤣🤣

SleepingStandingUp · 11/10/2018 20:47

@GreenLantern53 but why would I want to go and Google to work out if OP really is paying so little and why??

lara09 · 11/10/2018 20:47

@SleepingStandingUp the option to buy logo stuff if yours ! Asda do the same thing for 10% of the price so it's your choice to spend that much !
You can also buy all PE shorts and shoes in asda for a few pounds.
School tops get filthy why would you buy a logo one when your low on money it's stupid !

charge282 · 11/10/2018 20:49

If you're in an agreement to pay it back then I don't see why not. People borrow from private credit providers all the time.

mimibunz · 11/10/2018 20:52

Treat yourself! Some new clothes and bath stuff will make you feel happy and invigorated. And a nice treat for Christmas for your little one will be lovely. As others have already posted, you will pay it back. No worries here!

SleepingStandingUp · 11/10/2018 21:15

lara09 because some schools are stricter than others. Because in some schools you get bullied for ot being in the same colour as every one else - DS is in a mixture of both but one is pale green and one is dark green. I know my nurses' kid got stick for being in pale yellow instead of mustard yellow. I'm just saying that with two or three older kids with uniform, blazers, pe kit etc I can see how it adds up

Treat yourself OP, and enjoy it!
