Watched Stacy Dooley “Fashion dirty secret” on BBC last night. Lost sleep over it. Michael Gove is clueless on the poisonings of water for millions of people. It’s a disaster and it’s our fault with buying cheap cotton. We need to do something! Kids are being poisoned 🤢 it made me cry

Yeah, but the speed of fertility decline is nothing like China's was. Back in the 60s India and China had similar fertility - if China had continued like india there would be A LOT more people in the world today.

howabout · 11/10/2018 14:50

Wonder how long it will be before they are both like Japan and Germany though?

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 15:07

Theson of course you don't want to believe it, Google it if you don't believe me. The intensively grown crops (corn, sunflowers etc.) suck out every drop of water from the earth, the high tech farmers can't replace the nourishment properly because they're too stuck in their old fashioned petroleum based fertiliser cycles.

Oh the worst thing that no one has mentioned is that the permafrost is melting, with the Russians and no doubt the Americans and Canadians taking out every thing they can from Alaska, so flooding of the world is a very real threat.

And the CIA is responsible for sky contrails and man has never been on the moon and the Earth is flat and … Time to put your tin hat back on!!!! Confused

searose · 11/10/2018 15:41

Howabout is correct prosperity has a big impact on population.

Stonebake · 11/10/2018 15:46

I think the question is will prosperity in emerging economies reduce population growth enough that it counters the increase in emissions as a result of a more developed country.

searose · 11/10/2018 16:55

The answer to that stone bake is that it is very doubtful. This is why we can not look at population in isolation. It is a way of saying it is someone else’s problem. The future of our planet is every bodies concern.

Stonebake · 11/10/2018 16:57

Indeed searose.

ppeatfruit · 12/10/2018 10:51

TheSon Here's a large bucket of sand.

Did you google any of the things I posted? They were recently in perfectly factual programmes on the TV.

Some people can't hack it.

yorkrose · 13/10/2018 08:49

I have seen a few people on mn moaning about neighbours trees and I have known neighbours cut down trees in their gardens as soon as they have moved in! We can all do our bit by not doing this or replace or just plant a 🌲.

Another thread recently where people on mn stated having a shower morning and evening, jet washing pavements regularly... We can all do our bit by being a bit more conscious in our usage of water.

As I mentioned earlier, re housing developments built on farming fields, we could petition our councils for these developers to build up rather than out, to fit solar panels, toilets that use waste water and make them plant trees...

We could all make a greater effort to use basket or bags that really do last a life time and use a flask or similar bottle to take drinks from home.

My point is, we can all make a difference collectively.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/10/2018 09:02

True about the trees, there's always a thread or two about offensive neighbour trees. Don't know why they are so hated on here.

And don't get me started on plastic grass.

Tomatoesrock · 13/10/2018 09:30

Stacey Dooley documentaries always pull on my heart. Yes the world can be a shitty place.

I lost sleep over the treatment of Romanian refugees in Hungray.

In raging I can't access bbc3 in Ireland now with the iPlayer. Sorry off point of thread.

Tomatoesrock · 13/10/2018 09:32

Sorry wrong thread Blush

FuzzyShadowChatter · 13/10/2018 10:13

I haven't watched the documentary yet (I keep debating whether or not I should watch with my kids, they're 7-14), but I'm glad for this thread and the many links.

I'm curious about the dyes, there are often lists on environmental fabrics & materials and foods that typically growers use the least amount of pesticides, it would be interesting to find a list of dyes and if there are certain ones or colours that are safer or more dangerous than others that could be considered alongside buying less clothes, fabrics, and the many other things that people have discussed to be considered.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2018 18:36

yorkrose I have known people removing trees from an entire garden and a beautiful grape vine arch because they 'attract wasps, or the leaves make a mess" !!! There should be preservation on all trees.

yorkrose · 13/10/2018 20:13

ppeatfruit - I think so too. I understand trees can out grow their space but I think they should be replaced if it is a necessary evil to cut down. Hedges and trees help to absorb pollution, with asthma on the increase you would have thought every parent would want to keep them in the garden.

My Childs science teacher recently informed the class that dinosaurs wouldn't be able to survive today as there isn't enough oxygen (30% less) in the world due to lack of trees.

ppeatfruit · 14/10/2018 11:42

That's what upsets me about mainstream farming, they've grubbed up lots of hedges just to let those vast machines into the fields. There is some awareness now but I wander if it's too late.

Wink(psst, the teacher was wrong - dinosaur age atmosphere was 10%-15% oxygen, currently its 20%-25%)Confused

OatsBeansBarley · 14/10/2018 12:04

Dinosaurs are doing fine flying round our neighborhood right now.

TheDarkSideOfTheMoon · 06/11/2018 20:27

Yes, my thoughts exactly! I keep on trying to understand why would you have children if you’re starving, and go on to have more children only to watch them die from starvation??? I don’t get it, and it breaks your heart seeing all the appeals, on non-stop, and l have to keep explaining to my kids why we can’t support every one of them, l would be bloody broke (and going on supporting animal charities - at least they don’t do it to themselves, we are responsible)

percheron67 · 06/11/2018 21:00

Sexykitten. Well done. Instead of wastefully pumping billions in foreign aid we should be doing all we can to curb populations it is fair to no one, especially the children born into homes which cannot provide food and shelter for them to survive. The planet is running out of space.

Educator66 · 07/11/2018 12:30

Be careful about what you are being asked to believe! My conscience still bothers me about when I was present during the filming of various 'sympathy' causes. Each one was staged to express events that appealed to people's emotions, events that did not really exist - to gain money for the so called charities.

Charities have donations of money and items given to them by the public, Only a tiny percentage of that money finds its way to the cause that it claims it supports. About 5% is about the highest - that means for every pound raised or donated to the charity - on 5 PENCE goes to help those it claims to. For the larger charities - the government pays £ millions in grants to them every year. The directors of these so called charities are paid among the highest wages in the country, and administrators working in the companies earn more than 29K EACH. In addition to this - many charities run side profit making businesses trading on the back of their so called 'charity'. It is just a HUGE BUSINESS! Let those who have the responsibility of looking after people, do the job they are paid for. Only give money to those who are in need living in your own area, then you know where your money is going.

Caprisunorange · 07/11/2018 12:47

There have been quite a few of these threads recently and I find them increasingly maddening to be honest. Full of rubbish, simplistic, completely unrealistic ideas that could never work of be implemented, yet some joe blogs member of the public is claiming they have the answer to climate change Hmm do you really think we’d be here if it was all that simplistic?

Btw I think people have missed the point about cotton production and the Aran sea. It’s nothing to do with cheap cotton, it’s just cotton. Pay a fortune for it or buy a relatively cheap version, it’s all causing the same environmental damage.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/11/2018 13:06

You always so overly emotional ?

I have my own kids to worry about and perhaps if the Third World stopped breeding like rabbits there would not be such a problem !!

Caprisunorange · 07/11/2018 13:07

Are you talking to me? Have you read the thread? The third world aren’t breeding like rabbits. It’s a stereo type, and a pretty racist one at that
