Watched Stacy Dooley “Fashion dirty secret” on BBC last night. Lost sleep over it. Michael Gove is clueless on the poisonings of water for millions of people. It’s a disaster and it’s our fault with buying cheap cotton. We need to do something! Kids are being poisoned 🤢 it made me cry

In terms of pollution killing the world etc, I heard a speaker saying recycling doesn't make the dent everyone assumes it does, that the issue is travel, in particular planes and that the cost of us being able to go anywhere is essentiallly our air

DeltaG · 11/10/2018 06:35

@CaptainNelson

Overpopulation IS the problem. It is widely accepted that a second green revolution is required in order to meet food production requirements. A 70% increase in production will be needed to meet the population needs for 2050, according to the FAO. It isn't simply a case of buying less 'stuff'.

straightjeans · 11/10/2018 07:23

Apparently 71% of pollution is caused by just 100 companies. So yeah, we should do our part individually, but those companies need to do something QUICK. Because whatever we are doing will never be enough.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 09:00

Strange argument against organic farming when they talk about feeding the world with their thoroughly polluted wheat and sugar. Why are so many people starving now? There's huge mounts of wasted food from the supermarkets.

Under the 'fabulous' high tech farming there are only approx 60 harvests left!!!!!! Think about that.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2018 09:01

I agree straight jeans

yorkrose · 11/10/2018 09:03

DeltaG
Totally agree.
I live in a farming area and for the last 18 years, increasingly more so now, farmers have been selling off, once food producing fields for new housing developments!

THEsonofaBITCH · 11/10/2018 09:56

Confused oh so we are going into flights of fantasy now? Wink

I read some statistics from the OECD that if the population continues growing at its current rate and if we all continue consuming at our current rate, by 2050 there will not be enough water for everyone on the planet. And yes, the prediction is that war will break out over water. There will be massive exodus from areas with no water to areas with water. That will put a strain on areas that have water. I agree that something has to be done. And yes, I include myself in that comment. ;-) I do what I can.

Gushpanka · 11/10/2018 10:28

Population won't continue growing at its current rate. The rate of growth is steadily declining.

prh47bridge · 11/10/2018 11:16

by 2050 there will not be enough water for everyone on the planet

The prediction is that there will not be enough clean water. Reducing water consumption, finding better ways to filter contaminated water and sharing water more fairly can solve the problem even if the population continues to grow.

Leapfrog44 · 11/10/2018 11:18

Have you seriously just become aware of this??

Leapfrog44 · 11/10/2018 11:24

@DecafLatte Population growth in the 3rd world is NOT the problem. A single billionaire probably consumes as much as a small African country. These poor people consume almost nothing compared to us. It's the consumption level of the wealthy countries that's stripping the Earth of resources. It's the accumulation of of WEALTH that's the problem. Think about that for a moment.. the world is being fucked over by the West and we manage to blame the poor who have nothing and consume almost thing. Can't believe anyone would swallow that shit.

I bet all people here bitching about population growth don't include themselves in the problem. IMHO Anyone in the West with more than 2 children is a selfish cunt

hasanyoneseenthecat · 11/10/2018 11:36

Leapfrog44 tells it like it is

THEsonofaBITCH · 11/10/2018 11:58

Leapfrog44 rants about what it isn't
There I fixed the typos.

atotalshambles · 11/10/2018 12:09

Ultimately we are a very small country so whatever we do as a nation will have little effect. The list of 100 companies that contribute most to pollution were predominantly non-european There needs to be a global response including the emerging big economies (plus America of course). China has now stopped its 1 child policy as it has led to some less than favourable outcomes. As life conditions improve for those in developing countries population growth is likely to go down.

howabout · 11/10/2018 12:28

It's interesting that population discussions always seem to centre around China, Africa and the West. However it is India which is projected to have the largest population by 2030 at 1.5 bn. What also makes it interesting is the trajectory of the falling birth rate in line with economic development.

It's role as a consumer and polluter and as exploited population as well as exploiting population is also interesting given the massive wealth disparities within the country. This is also true for China, especially given its increasing role as investor in Africa.

Pashal2 · 11/10/2018 12:34

Who told you that?

Pashal2 · 11/10/2018 12:41

No, people that can AFFORD to have more than two kids can have them. Wealth is a reward for hard work. Only a head up their rectum person would think socialist/communist philosophy is the wave of the future. Communism/socialism is an epic fail, ask the north Koreans. Don't resent people because they have weath and others don't. Anyone who resents the success of others is a jealous cunt, to coin an already used phrase

svalentine60 · 11/10/2018 12:50

What an annoying, patronising and incorrect title. Very preachy and naive at best. I won't think twice about buying cheap cotton items if I need to. I'm not the moral guardian of the world and as most people in these countries with starvation, drought etc continue to breed at an astonishing rate, I don't see why I should have to if they don't feel the need to every help themselves. So not it's not 'our' fault and have you thought of the impact of the poor families who work in these industries will be if they couldn't earn any money for their families. A very naive and preachy post.

straightjeans · 11/10/2018 13:04

@svalentine60 This comment is worse than the initial post.

straightjeans · 11/10/2018 13:06

@Pashal2 Is it though? How many wealthy people have had help from their family, or are profiting from their family name?

There are people who work 60+ hours a week and can still barely make ends meet. Is 60 hours not hard work in your eyes? Or?

YourMateMima · 11/10/2018 13:26

Sorry about that

Gushpanka · 11/10/2018 13:46

Howabout

India's population growth is nearly all due to population momentum. It's only 2.3 at the moment which is just above replacement once mortality is taken into account.

Gushpanka · 11/10/2018 13:47

Leapfrog

Why 2 children? Why not 1 child? 2 seems a bit arbitrary.

howabout · 11/10/2018 14:33

Gush that is my point. India is the biggest source of population growth and it is already more or less under control and on a falling trajectory. Likewise China.

India is interesting because the birth rate has fallen so dramatically without China's draconian policies.
