Boys and men with ear rings??

About 40 years ago when my brother was a teen he had is left ear pierced as it was 'fashionable' at the time. However, this phase shortly passed and by the time he was 20 the ear ring had gone forever.

I see younger and younger boys (from age 8 or 9 upwards) who wear an ear ring in the left ear.

AIBU to ask if this is still to do with fashion or am I missing a much deeper reason such as cultural?

My BIL still wears an ear ring (he's in his late 50's) and in his case it is definitely NOT cultural - he just thinks it looks cool!!!

I think he looks ridiculous AIBU? I try not to laugh when I see him, but that's more because he has huge ears and the ear ring draws attention to this!

Why are people so bloody judgemental and plain nasty? You dont like it, that's your problem not the other persons. I personally dont like the eyebrow trends that are going on now. I personally wouldnt have it done but i certainly wouldnt bitch about family members doing it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/10/2018 13:50

You know how you felt when your DH told you you looked ugly in your leggings... did you think, maybe, he was mocking in retribution for laughing at his brother?

You are far less abrasive when you want sympathy...

VladmirsPoutine · 07/10/2018 13:51

I don't like it when people peel bananas from the bottom as opposed to the stem. I think it looks ridiculous. It's a very good thing I'm not part of the banana-peeling law enforcement team.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/10/2018 13:52

Oh is this the OP from that tedious leggings thread?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/10/2018 13:53

Yup!

CharlotteWebb · 07/10/2018 13:53

Oh dear

I am quite fond of a man with an earring TBF.

Boys and men with ear rings??
NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/10/2018 13:55

vlad I can never even do that without squashing the banana. My kids do it that way though. I hate it because it makes me jealous if their peeling skills.

Hideandgo · 07/10/2018 13:55

You realise that everything you think and judge about how people look is purely perception based on brainwashing?

Sparklesocks · 07/10/2018 13:55

If a boy or man wants to wear an earring I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's not up to me to police their appearance, if they are comfortable and happy then they should wear whatever clothes/jewellery they want.

Hideandgo · 07/10/2018 13:56

We’re all guilty of it by the way. I sometimes try to see people how they think they look rather than how I see them. It’s an interesting experiment.

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2018 13:56

Tell me about the leggings thread.

I don’t want any sympathy and my husband didn’t think or say I looked ugly in leggings

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3387064-to-ask-if-you-wear-leggings?msgid=81604527

OPs DH was uncomplimentary, cue half responses saying leggings = fugly, other half saying they're comfy. One half (let you guess which) were considerably more unpleasant than the other!

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2018 14:04

Thanks Curious. So in OP's house no leggings and no earrings now then I guess.

newhousenewstart · 07/10/2018 14:04

YABU to laugh at anyone who chooses to wear ear jewellery. I personally don’t like seeing young boys with earrings. I find it hard to explain why and if I’m honest it’s probably snobbery. You don’t often see professional males, doctors lawyers etc with earimgs

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/10/2018 14:05

No... but his comments made you think you looked fat. You felt demeaned, undermined, unhappy, in need of reassurance....

How do you think your BIL feels when you try so hard not to laugh at his ridiculous, huge, be-ringed ears?

Birdsgottafly · 07/10/2018 14:05

""I try not to laugh when I see him, but that's more because he has huge ears and the ear ring draws attention to this!""

If a man came on here and criticised something Women wore because it drew attention to it, he would be slaughtered.

So can't Women with big ears wear earrings? Are you the type that think that Women have to stick to rigid fashion rules to look taller/slimmer etc, rather than just what they like?

VladmirsPoutine · 07/10/2018 14:06

Tomorrow's thread: "AIBU to think trainers should not be worn unless you're at the gym?" - Backstory would be following the leggings debacle the OP catches her husband wearing jeans and trainers en route to Sainsbury's.

Soontobe60 · 07/10/2018 14:08

So you tried to explain that you're not laughing at him because he wears an earring, but because he has huge ears which the earring draws attention to! 😱😱😱
In other words laughing at a part of his body that's big. How kind of you!

properlook · 07/10/2018 14:09

My FIL has one he puts in to look cool. He is nearly 70.

He looks like a dick.

Luckily DH doesn’t speak to his Ps these days so I don’t care!

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2018 14:10

Or maybe 'AIBU to think football tops should only be worn on the pitch?'

JacquesHammer · 07/10/2018 14:10

*My FIL has one he puts in to look cool. He is nearly 70.

I think the luck is on both sides to be honest

properlook · 07/10/2018 14:12

Tbf, football tops have (yobbish) connotations that other clothing does not.
