To let 10 YO DS watch a horror film?

DS10 has decided he doesn't want to trick or treat this year and wants to stay in and watch a "horror film".

He's seen most of the children's ones like Miss Peregrine, Hotel Transylvanias, The Witches etc.

He'd like to watch something a little more "grown up" but I can't seem to think of any that are suitable, or a 12A.

DH thinks Woman in Black is a good place to start but I was horrified that it's a 12 as I found it really scary and definitely unsuitable for a 10 year old!

What's your favourite mild horror?

Beetle juice!! Goonies scared me to death at that age!

Passmethecrisps · 07/10/2018 21:12

I remember watching Blair Witch and just feeling a bit sea sick. It was only later on that it weedled its way in to my brain. That end scene particularly.

I was wondering about Green Mile actually but I am not sure if I have seen the whole thing

Hushnownobodycares · 07/10/2018 21:15

I had to watch Blair Witch twice before I really got it.

The ending is utterly chilling.

OhFlipMama · 07/10/2018 21:15

Gremlins? not scary but as a child I thought it was!

JellieEllie · 07/10/2018 21:16

To the person who mentioned Edward Scissorhands being extremely innapropriate?
It isn't a horror film. It's a dark film but perfectly suitable for a child of 10 or above !

Definitely go for it OP it's such a brilliant film and has reminded me to watch it again myself 😀

Starlight345 · 07/10/2018 21:18

My Ds watched the corpse bride a couple of years ago. He loved it and isn’t particularly brave

JellieEllie · 07/10/2018 21:21

@SeagIass sorry I misread your post. Apologies!

ProfessorMoody · 07/10/2018 21:24

On IMDB it says about Poltergeist :

The film was originally given a R rating, but the filmmakers protested successfully and got a PG rating

It does seem strange though!

Has The Lost Boys been mentioned yet?

DS loved it.

alfagirl73 · 07/10/2018 21:25

Edward Scissorhands is definitely NOT a horror film; there is nothing scary about it at all. It's actually a beautiful film with a very important message running through the story about understanding, acceptance, and how society in general makes incorrect assumptions about people. Edward is a sweetheart of a character. If anything it's a very sad story - certainly nothing scary about it.

angieloumc · 07/10/2018 21:25

I can't believe a teacher shows The Others to year 7 kids! It might be a 12 but imo highly inappropriate and scary for that age group. Also the Woman in Black is only a 12 but I've heard of that been shown to year 7.
Some of these suggestions are ludicrous.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 07/10/2018 21:27

with a very important message running through the story

If you are a man with scissors for hands, you have to be very careful when peeing.

Small Soldiers is quite a cool film to watch at Halloween too.

Edward Scissorhands is a great idea - think I may suggest that to DD for her Halloween party.

Monster House is very appropriate for that age or The Addams Family

How about Aliens in the Attic? Not sure that's had a mention so far.

Chimchar · 07/10/2018 21:37

I've not rtft, but wanted to say that IMDB is a brilliant resource for checking out films... there's a parents bit on each film listing that tells you about potentially scary/unsuitable bits.
They do a swear count too which always makes me laugh. It lists "5 fucks, 4 wanks, two bastards, 8 craps and 1 bloody" Grin

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 21:51

Woman in Black at the theatre scared the living shit out of me.

Haireverywhere · 07/10/2018 21:53

IMBD parent's guide fan here too. Gives a blow by blow of profanity, sex, violence, drugs and the like.

FunSponges · 07/10/2018 21:55

I have a 10 year old and I'm very Hmm at many of these suggestions. Ages are on films for a reason and many of these must be at least 15s, not remotely suitable for a 10 year old. I don't let mine watch most 12s tbh. Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and Jurassic Park is as far as it goes.

I loved Drop Dead Fred as a child and could recite the whole bloody thing I watched it that much (not a horror though so don't know why that's been mentioned) but I distinctly remember the bit where they are about to have sex. It is a 15.

I do not recommend the Woman in Black. It scared the shit out of me.

Fatted · 07/10/2018 21:56

I can't believe so many people are saying watch Gremlins on Halloween!! It is a Christmas film!! I insist on making my DH watch it every year on Xmas eve!

WeeM · 07/10/2018 21:58

I was going to suggest Tremors too, I loved it at that age but times were different then so worth checking it’s suitable first! Or the Goonies. I saw Ghostbusters when it came out before I was 10...again times were different then!
Please not Blair Witch, it fucking terrified me.

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 22:14

The shining

Oh fgs

ThanosSavedMe · 07/10/2018 22:16

Child’s play. Poltergeist. Blair witch. Lost boys. For a 10 year old. What is wrong with people?

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 22:18

You forgot The Shining, the Green Mile

Miladymilord · 07/10/2018 22:18

Oh and the babadook!!
