ask about school blazer

salterello · 05/10/2018 15:06

Sorry if this is a silly question. My DS has just started high school and he wears a blazer. He changes his trousers, shirt and jumper daily, but other mums say they wash the blazer weekly.

If it doesn't look dirty or smell is there really any need?

I haven't washed his blazer at all yet as it appears clean and I think if you wash it too often it will look shabby.

How often do you wash your child's blazer?

Half termly.
*wear gloves before emptying pockets is my advice.

salterello · 05/10/2018 15:09

Ok thank you - that's the frequency I was thinking. Good tip about the gloves!

DS's blazer is dry clean only so it gets done twice a year but i do sponge off any paint/food marks off when i spot them.

DD's is done once year as she does less running around (sensible sixth former).

dangermouseisace · 05/10/2018 15:12

I think I washed my sons twice last year. He has to wear it every school day.

Mind you, he doesn’t smell (yet) which is weird for a 12 year old. When my middle kid goes to school it will be weekly because he gets v sweaty/smelly!

user187656748 · 05/10/2018 15:12

Ours are washed every week.

AamdC · 05/10/2018 15:14

Im wondering this myself i also have a child whose just started high school , also wondering wether it will wrinkle badly in the wash .

Tinty · 05/10/2018 15:18

I only wash my DD's half termly. Sadly they still get to looking shabby quite quickly. The arms get quite shiny at the elbows if they have to wear them all the time.

clary · 05/10/2018 15:21

Every half term.

He wears his trousers more than one day too, how bad are they going to get between 8.15am and 3.30pm?

TeenTimesTwo · 05/10/2018 15:22

I couldn't wash DD's every week, it would take that long to remove all the badges!

salterello · 05/10/2018 15:24

clary - if I could get away with 2 days consecutively with trousers I would! It seems his lunch ends up on his top half and bits of pen ink and mud end up on the trousers! At least his blazer still looks reasonable!

Hope it doesn't look too shabby too soon, that's by far the most expensive part of his uniform from a specialist shop - everything else from Asda!

I washed DS12 blazer and it never looked the same after hoping he grows before have to wash again!

fishfingersandketchup · 05/10/2018 15:31

Every couple of weeks. TBH it usually walks itself to the washing machine EnvyGrin

Pythonesque · 05/10/2018 15:33

I was just thinking earlier how I don't understand people thinking trousers and jumpers need washing daily either! My son's trousers were washed once a week all the way through primary and that's still fine now he's a teenager. Jumpers - when necessary or maybe every half term or so. School blazer - sponged if I noticed a problem, drycleaned a couple of times a year. When I was at school my blazer was also only cleaned about every term or so I think.

Pythonesque · 05/10/2018 15:34

dangermouse my 13 yr old doesn't smell much yet either, though he's already 6' tall. I'm trying to make sure he changes his shirt every other day minimum now ...

Gatehouse77 · 05/10/2018 15:36

Every half term here...if I remember!

CMOTDibbler · 05/10/2018 15:38

Mine cycles to school and back and there is no way he could wear his trousers a second day. Equally his blazer gets febreezed inside once a week and then I think may be washed every 3 if I can get away with it.
He is a smelly, messy oik of a 12 year old though!

JellySlice · 05/10/2018 15:45

People wash blazers every week? Confused Life is too short, surely? My averagely stinky teens' blazers get washed in the Xmas, Easter and summer holidays. I don't know what the blazers are made of. Teflon, perhaps?

user187656748 · 05/10/2018 15:47

But all you do is sling them in the wash with the other uniform items. Its hardly a lot of effort Confused

Perfectly1mperfect · 05/10/2018 15:57

Every half term and maybe sometimes in between if it gets anything particularly bad on it. Most things can just be wiped off in between washes.

If it doesn't smell or look dirty you don't have to go along with the ones who wash weekly. As someone above said, life's too short to do any more than is necessary Wink. I always think schools must just be covered in dirt, mud and germs anyway with all those kids in....(😷 shudder) ...so we're fighting a losing battle anyway. Grin

TeenTimesTwo · 05/10/2018 15:58

No user

First you have to remove hundreds of badges.
Then you have to find every hidden pocket and empty it.
Then you bung in wash
Then get it dry
Then painstakingly replace every badge exactly where it was before
And refill the pockets with all the important rubbish.

JellySlice · 05/10/2018 15:59

Badges and pockets.

The dc never empty them properly, resultng in other garments being ruined (toffees and biros Angry). And I'm the one who has to dismantle the sump to extract the coins and pins.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 05/10/2018 16:02

Every 4 to 6 weeks. More often if something gets spilled on them. Agree with needing hazmat to empty the pockets, and also watch for pens slipping through pockets and between lining and fabric.

I do think the woollen blazers are smarter, but the polyester ones can't be beaten for practicality.

Rebellia · 05/10/2018 16:09

My school blazer was dryclean only so got done once a year.

Rebellia · 05/10/2018 16:10

However, we only had to wear them during assemblies, not all the time like schools seem to do these days

Teenagemaw · 05/10/2018 18:24

Once a year!!!
