Disgusting. From the word DISGUST.

How, I mean just how, does anybody think it is spelt/spelled (choose whichever you prefer) discusting Confused

I'm not normally pedantic but this one really rattles me Blush

I feel your pain.
Memento, from Memory, not Momento.

AamdC · 05/10/2018 11:51

Maybe they thonk the word is Discust?

Danteinferno · 05/10/2018 11:52

Maybe they’re dyslexic and don’t realise it’s a mistake

Padparadscha · 05/10/2018 11:54

Leaves me fumming, it really does. I mean I’m no angle, but even I can get my speling rite.

Feellikeimthemaid · 05/10/2018 11:56

Oh pleeeeease, don't get me started on this one. I do acknowledge that some people have dyslexia or learning difficulties, but the amount of people that don't know the right use of there/their/they're, where/were, his/he's etc, does my head in. Then we have discusting instead of disgusting, and dose instead of does....it makes me wonder if anyone ever listened in school. It's not just on MN either, you see it all the time in any forum and all over FB. In my head I am the grammar/spelling police, but I don't correct people because I don't know their circumstances and it seems pedantic . However, you've just provided a means to release those pent up frustrations OP Grin.

Maybe they thonk the word is Discust?

Which isn't a word. Which was kind of my point.

Maybe they’re dyslexic and don’t realise it’s a mistake

I acknowledge that yes, some people who do this may be dyslexic, but not all.

Leaves me fumming, it really does. I mean I’m no angle, but even I can get my speling rite.

It's not a misspelling though, is it? So many people say and write discusting.

Doyoumind · 05/10/2018 12:48

The difference between saying disgusting and discusting is so minimal that I don't think you can tell what people are saying. It's so minimal that people haven't realised it's a g and not a c if they write it with a c. I've never actually seen people spell it with a c anyway.

skippy67 · 05/10/2018 12:52

Try not to loose sleep over it...Grin

Yutes · 05/10/2018 12:59

I think it’s the discrepancy between discuss/disgust and discussing/disgusting. I also think it’s to do with lazy pronunciation and mishearing things.

knittingdad · 05/10/2018 12:59

You've not heard of discusting?

This is a blended word formed from the combination of "disgusting" (something horrid or unpleasant) and "cuss" (an insult) which means something that has been intentionally made so unpleasant as to be an insult.

AamdC · 05/10/2018 13:13

I know Diacust isnt a word but some people might think Disgust is spelt Discust Dh is a terrible speller he wouldnt necessarily know how its spelt , he always checks with me

buscaution · 05/10/2018 13:14

I'm probably a dick for wondering.

OP posts:
AamdC · 05/10/2018 13:14

Discust even , ignore my own shocking spelling i have a cracked screen its hard to see!

HalloumiGus · 05/10/2018 14:10

I always assume it's something to do with regional pronunciation so spelling it how people are saying it. Lose / loose sends me insane because it's becoming so widespread.

Bombardier25966 · 05/10/2018 14:16

Definitely and defiantly.

They're completely different words!

derxa · 05/10/2018 14:17

I also hate distain for disdain but it's to do with the fact that the d in the middle of disdain sounds very like /t/. And it's similar to the pronunciation of g in disgusting. /g/ is a voiced velar plosive and /k/ is its voiceless counterpart.

Hidingtonothing · 05/10/2018 14:19

It’s ‘rediculous’ that gets me Angry

Beautifulblue · 05/10/2018 14:22

The worst, for me anyway, is when a FATHER writes about how proud he is to be said child's FARTHER. It's just the worst! Envy

ChicagoLil · 05/10/2018 14:30

Thomas the Tank.

He's not Thomas the Tank he is Thomas the Tank Engine!!!!

Topseyt · 05/10/2018 14:35

All of these get my goat.

Then we have would/could/should OF instead of HAVE.

Loose instead of lose!! NO!! They have completely different meanings. Loose means not tight enough. Lose means you can't find something or have mislaid it.

Then there are those who seem to think that "alot" is an actual word. No again. It is two separate words.

I understand that some people do have genuine problems with reading and spelling, but not all. Many are just not thinking and are butchering the English language.

EnglishRose13 · 05/10/2018 14:41

Discussing for disgusting is worse. Though at least it's actually a word, I guess.

My absolute favourite is carnt.

There'll be more that I can't think of

frogface69 · 05/10/2018 14:45

Draws.
It's Drawers.
Numpties.

costacoffeecup · 05/10/2018 14:46

See rediculous all the time. It even has a big red line under it when I write it so don't know how people don't spot that! Some must be autocorrects like definitely/defiantly.

costacoffeecup · 05/10/2018 14:47

And been instead of being. This seems to be slipping into general use actually.

MemoryOfSleep · 05/10/2018 14:57

It is a pet peeve of mine, too. I think they just don't know what the word is. Like people who say 'pacific' instead of 'specific'.
