Aibu in thinking there is no way to get rid of the really hard skin at the bottom of my feet? Sorry I know that is totally gross... but I've tried a foot spa, pumis (sp?) stones and they soften up slightly but it's like my foot has just turned to hard skin especially on the heels! Any tips????

Yup.

Everyone seems to think that hard skin is a bad thing, but you can go too far.

If you cut all the hard skin back to pink, live skin, your feet will end up too tender to walk on.

Calluses which cause pain need to be managed, rough skin can be smoothed, corns need help, but all hard skin shouldn't be removed.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 04/10/2018 13:40

I thought so. I was actually alarmed by people who said you needed to literally shave the skin off by yourself at home. That might be in effect what a chiropodist would do, but they're experts with the right equipment. Surely nobody actually literally tries to shave their own skin off as a home treatment?

Haworthia · 04/10/2018 13:43

Agreeing with everyone who’s said that Footner doesn’t deal with really hard skin. It left mine all behind- gutted!

I go to a beauty therapist who does callus peels which really makes a difference.

Whitecurrants · 04/10/2018 14:03

Margaret Dabbs foot file here - use on dry feet then lots of cream. Better still visit Margaret Dabbs (if in London) or another good podiatrist

McFugget · 04/10/2018 14:06

I wasn't hugely impressed with Footner either, but have since found out you're supposed to soak your feet first, until they're prune-like. Then it can penetrate the thicker sole skin.

Flowersandblack · 04/10/2018 14:12

Footner

ribblerobble · 04/10/2018 16:15

I've never understand the requirement for baby-smooth feet and why it needs removing - have I just not got enough hard skin yet???

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 04/10/2018 17:28

It's useful if your feet gets so rough that the skin shreds your tights and not your toenails. 😳

AynRandTheObjectivist · 04/10/2018 18:17

Or if you could strike a match on them. I'd love to get more sensitivity on my soles as well. I'll be trying Footner. I've only ever used a pumice stone and it barely makes a scratch.

HildaZelda · 04/10/2018 18:23

A podiatrist or chiropractor.

HildaZelda · 04/10/2018 18:24

Chiropodist even! Thank you autocorrect Hmm

Insertquirkyname · 04/10/2018 20:04

Footner but soak your feet first and wear for an hour- literally the best thing I’ve learned on mumsnet!

Tiredtomybones · 04/10/2018 20:20

Sorry to ask (and don't mean to offend) but can anyone tell me what the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist is please? My feet really need some attention and I want to be sure before booking an appointment.

atomicfission · 04/10/2018 22:38

Podiatrist is just the new (since 1993!) word for chiropodist.

FoxFoxSierra · 04/10/2018 23:11

The best cream I have ever used is soap and glory heel genius, apply every night and within a week your feet will be soft and beautiful

Marmite27 · 04/10/2018 23:22

I rubbed childs Farm moisturiser in day and night until the bottle had gone when I found it weirdly tacky as it dried and didn’t want to use it on the baby anymore.

Eventually they softened up.

Brigante9 · 04/10/2018 23:27

I can thoroughly recommend a severe dose of pompholyx eczema, took all the skin off my feet (and hands) right off! A bit extreme, I admit. Results can be seen (if you have a very strong stomach) on Sporners Corner. I’ve been left with some weird ridges of hard skin which are frankly painful. Must see a chiropodist.

MelonBuffet · 05/10/2018 14:54

Ribble, for me, I have to get rid of the really hard skin because if I don’t, it gets really thick and then it cracks and bleeds which makes walking really painful and makes a mess of my floor/sofa/bed!

On holiday staying with family once so I didn’t have my foot file, so my feet were split and bleeding, and I had to ask to use some of BIL’s sandpaper on my feet! SIL was horrified for me and suggested I see the GP about it, which I did, only to be told it’s perfectly normal and just to use a file and cream regularly.

Mine is pretty bad though. I’m lucky DP likes to give foot rubs - apparently he used to to his mum’s Hmm Confused

Thursdaydreaming · 05/10/2018 14:59

Nope, there's nothing you can do. I've tried the footner thing. Also had several visits with podiatrist, they spent ages shaving the dead skin and I still left with heaps, you could hardly tell the difference.

googoogagablabla · 06/10/2018 03:34

Great tips on here!
Anyone had any success with the jml ped egg?

Also is the hard skin meant to be so itchy?
