AIBU?
To hate this word ?
whyispeppainthenightgarden · 02/10/2018 22:55
Autumnal it just fills me with rage. I’m sure the first time I heard it used was last year but just don’t like it at all. AIBU ?
AtrociousCircumstance · 02/10/2018 22:56
Lovely word. I can just see the shiny conkers on the ground and the russet leaves whirling around
Mymycherrypie · 02/10/2018 22:56
Yabu. Can you explain? Is it the sound or the connotation or the insta-hipness of it? What?
whyispeppainthenightgarden · 02/10/2018 22:59
Erm I don’t even no tbh I’m clearly being irrational just really bugs me
DramaAlpaca · 02/10/2018 23:01
YABU, it's such a satisfying word to say & has such nice associations.
paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 02/10/2018 23:02
Good, I am pissed off with so many things today but not this. Autumnal can stay and I am not wholly irrational.
Sorry OP.
whyispeppainthenightgarden · 02/10/2018 23:05
Definitely just me then. Will go a hibernate and hopefully I will start liking it
AhhhhThatsBass · 02/10/2018 23:05
Agree with you. I wrote it earlier today and subsequently deleted it and replaced with Autumn. I felt like a nob using the word Autumnal.
whyispeppainthenightgarden · 02/10/2018 23:12
swedish Because I’m sure people just used to say autumn
UserMillionBillion · 02/10/2018 23:14
I do know what you mean. It feels a bit clunky to say wintery or summery or springy but ''autumnal'' has some propery wordy status.
confusedmummy76 · 02/10/2018 23:15
However, I have literally only heard it ONCE before; so I wasn't aware it was a 'thing'
Heychickadee · 02/10/2018 23:15
Yes! I can’t explain why this gives me the rage but it does. My partner says I’m on purpose now to wind me up.
UserMillionBillion · 02/10/2018 23:15
In fact, I"m going to stick with Autumnee, pronounced Autummmeeee
PrincessWire · 02/10/2018 23:16
It's a word that's been around for an awfully long time and other doesn't replace the word autumn. Autumnal is to autumn as summery is to summer.
paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 02/10/2018 23:18
I don't think it's the equivalent of saying autumn. Doesn't it mean autumny which is definitely not a word.
Eg, It's feeling very autumnal today. (autumn wouldn't fit without changing the sentence structure)
Or, Those colours are very autumnal (again autumn doesn't fit).
30birthdayholiday · 02/10/2018 23:19
I agree with you OP, I heard it today and I just loathe the sound of it. Was thinking to myself earlier “now there’s a word I really hate!”
Andylion · 02/10/2018 23:23
What is wrong with simply "autumn"
Autumn is a noun and autumnal is an adjective. They can't be used interchangeably.
NC4Now · 02/10/2018 23:27
But why don’t the other seasons get the same treatment?
Springal
Summeral
Winteral?
Wrong. And they are far superior seasons.
I’m with you OP.
