to ask which contraception you're on?

I have ADHD and really struggle to remember to take the pill every day. Or I just put it off and don't take it. I am the same with anti anxiety/ antidepressant meds, antibiotics - anything like that. It's weird and damaging I know - but it doesn't work for me. Also gained weight and was really moody.

I had the implant and bled constantly for four months, until I finally persuaded them to take it out. Wasn't even sexually active at this point, but still had to spend weeks persuading my surgery to do it. They kept trying to put me on the pill aswell to try and counteract the bleeding Hmm

Have heard some good, and some horrific things about the coil. Truth be told, I'm terrified about the procedure (I have terrible anxiety, and just thinking about it makes my heart race). Also scared that if I did manage to get it put in, I would have the same side effects as the implant, and would have to go through taking it out a couple of months later. If this is anybody else's method of choice, how was the procedure? Am I right in thinking there's a coil which doesn't contain the normal hormones? This is a big plus for me - I worry about weight gain; after years of being overweight, I've finally succeeded in getting down to (just) a healthy weight. Also, does this mean the constant bleeding is less likely?

Or the depot. I keep thinking about this. But I work in a GP surgery with over 20000 patients and less than 15 are on the depot. Seems a bit strange?

Just want everyone's thoughts really. I'm dating someone (have made clear I won't go any further without STI checks, and I'm not a big fan of condoms Blush) and am thinking about taking it further, but need to sort this first.

Cooper coil - no hormones. No issues and lasts 10 years

MilkAndSevenSugars · 03/10/2018 00:16

How was the procedure?

I’m on the depo injection. It was the only one that wouldn’t interact with my medication.

71HourAchmed · 03/10/2018 00:22

Copper coil - love it. Periods a bit heavier than before, but they were very light beforehand. Bit pinchy putting it in, but not too bad really.

BetsyBigNose · 03/10/2018 01:07

I'm on Deppo Provera - one injection in the bum every 12 weeks and no periods!

I've been on it for nearly 10 years, since having my youngest DD and can't recommend it highly enough, it's so simple and easy - I'm always surprised more women don't use it.

OP you say you're not great at remembering to take pills etc. with the Deppo you can get your GP surgery to text you when it's been 11 weeks since your last injection, to remind you to make an appointment within the next week (or just stick a calendar reminder on your phone).

AlphaJuno · 03/10/2018 01:09

Mirena coil. I couldn't have the copper as it's supposed to make periods heavier and I was already suffering from heavy periods and anemia. I also have anxiety about gaining weight and was told this was the least risk of weight gain. A little bit uncomfortable on insertion but all done very quickly. I did bleed and have mood swings for about the first month or 2, but that seems to have settled down now. It's great I don't have to worry about taking tablets.

Belina · 03/10/2018 04:16

I had the marina coil fitted today it is probably the worse pain I have ever felt and I have had several plastic surgery procedures.

It felt like someone stabbing me in the womb now I have period like cramps heard it goes after a few days hopefully

I'm absolutely dreading if I dont get along with it and have to take it out

Belina · 03/10/2018 04:20

Had it done because I was on the pill for years which clearly made me put on weight when I come off it weigh dropped I hope the coil wont make me gain weight

I got the 3 year one so that is less hormones
There is a 5 yr one with more hormones

The copper makes your periods heavier and more painful for some women but it is the advantage of no hormones

Minniemountain · 03/10/2018 06:11

Copper coil. I'd had enough of hormones. My periods were heavier for a few months then settled back to normal.

The procedure was a bit uncomfortable but was quick. I took painkillers beforehand.

adoggymama · 03/10/2018 06:15

I take Yasmin :) works for me- just have to set multiple alarms so I'm sure I've taken it at the right time.

HB2Me · 03/10/2018 07:03

I’ve got a copper coil. I won’t lie, the fitting was a little bit painful and I had cramps for about two days afterwards.

My periods are heavier and more painful but I still feel the coil is the best contraception I’ve ever been on.

I used to take the mini pill (can’t take the combined pill due to migraines) and it turned me into a fat angry nightmare.

MonaChopsis · 03/10/2018 07:09

Mirena. Thought I'd made a mistake for the first 2-3 weeks, but it all settled down very quickly and I love it now.

brookshelley · 03/10/2018 07:12

I had the marina coil fitted today it is probably the worse pain I have ever felt and I have had several plastic surgery procedures.

I got a Mirena a few weeks ago and was terrified due to comments like this. It honestly didn't feel like anymore more than a normal smear. I took some pain medicine 1 hour before.

Maybe it's the skill of the person inserting it? Because honestly I found it almost forgettable painwise.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 03/10/2018 07:22

Copper coil. It was horrendously painful when the doctor tried inserting it without the anaesthetic gel I'd previously requested "because [you've] had children!", but it was absolutely fine after she gave in and applied the gel.

ems137 · 03/10/2018 07:57

I've had the copper coil for about 2 weeks now, I didn't want to take any hormones. So far so good but will wait and see what the 1st period is like as I've heard they can be super heavy

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 03/10/2018 08:03

Currently Natural Cycles but I used to have a Mirena coil and was very happy with it. I had a local anaesthetic in my cervix as I haven’t had children, which helped, and it was uncomfortable but nowhere near the worst pain, uncomfortable buy manageable and very quick. Had some period like pains for a couple of days, and some slightly dodgy skin for a couple of months and then it was fine. They’re also really easy to take out, my GP whipped mine out in 5 seconds. I’d highly recommend, but request a local anaesthetic.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 03/10/2018 08:04

My anaesthetic was injected btw, not a gel

brookshelley · 03/10/2018 08:07

I should add: I've had children but both c-section and never laboured so I was expecting it to be horrible, but it was fine.

Trills · 03/10/2018 08:09

Depo

I don't have periods, or cyclic moods.

It's great (for me anyway)

Darkestnight · 03/10/2018 08:11

Was on the depro injection but that stopped working for me. They put me on the pill and my irregular periods have stopped which were heavy all the time and feel much better now

Sallygoroundthemoon · 03/10/2018 08:29

A combination of natural cycles then when I'm fertile, either condoms, diaphragm or sponges. No-one on MN ever seems to use the latter - it seems from on here that hormones or the coil or condoms are the only choices but actually caps/diaphragms/sponges etc can be just as effective and aren't either evasive or hormones.
I've tried everything else along the way. Depo made me suicidal.

redexpat · 03/10/2018 08:41

Have you considered the patch? It's a week's worth of pill. You only have to remember to change it once a week so you can just set an alarm on your phone.

CountessVonBoobs · 03/10/2018 08:45

On my third copper IUD (one pre kids, one between pregnancies, one post DC2). Fucking love them. Retain my sex drive, no hormonal effects, nothing to remember, no pregnancy worries. Conceived straightaway on having it out each time. Insertion was a little uncomfortable but no worse than that.

BuntyII · 03/10/2018 08:45

I had the copper coil, the actual insertion was fine but I could feel it scratching me for about 6 weeks and had it taken out eventually because my periods went from light - normal to bleeding through a tampon and pad every hour at stages Confused

coffeeagogo · 03/10/2018 09:48

Copper coil - is great and I wish I'd done it years ago after completing my family - i didn't find the insertion painful more uncomfortable and I didn't have any cramping after - it's been in a year now and would recommend to everyone
