To think each time I watch a Harry Potter film.

That if Voldermorte had gunned for Hermione from the start, rather than focusing on Harry, there would only have been one film. Harry wouldn't have lasted two minutes without her.

Ive never seen Goblet before-I know they are wizards etc, but isn't the tri wizards tournament really sodding harsh for children to be participating in?

MrsJayy · 29/09/2018 20:05

It is supposed to be forc6th years it is when they can do full magic

MrsJayy · 29/09/2018 20:08

Just so happens this year it is fine for a 14 year old Dh said the ministrey of magic should have stepped in!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/09/2018 20:13

No, in past years they let any kid of any age participate. Then the death toll rose too high and the tournament was stopped. Dumbledore was allowed to re-instigate it on the basis that it was restricted to 17+ year olds only.

Dumbledore’s motives are pretty murky here - yay, a tournament that is famous for killing kids! Why not, eh?

Tartsamazeballs · 29/09/2018 20:15

Of course Voldemort could have considered a mudblood a threat. He's only half blood himself.

MrsJayy · 29/09/2018 20:17

Oh i have seen this film lots and I have missed the whole point but yeah Dumbledore is iffy even before we knew what he was like

PawneeParksDept · 29/09/2018 20:18

I think every time that Harry isn't a particularly nice guy if you set aside sympathy for his tragic backstory. And that DanRad particularly in the early films is the worst actor in the cast.

I think even JKR might regret that Hermione wasn't the hero

redlittlesquirrel · 29/09/2018 20:23

and the acting definitely improved film by film.

I don't think Daniel Radcliffe's acting did improve, at least not much, though the others did noticeably.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 29/09/2018 20:23

They're pretty OK with a bit of corporal punishment so I'm sure killing kids in the name of competition isn't too odd for them. Just watched the graveyard scene and dh and I were both saying he could have just gotten it over and done with. But no, voldy has to grandstand.

lifechangesforever · 29/09/2018 20:27

On a slightly different tangent but I need to know now I've thought of it whilst watching GOF.. if they captured Barry Crouch Junior and had the Veritiserum (sp?) why didn't they just give him more in front on the Minister for Magic so that he spilled the whole tale and therefore removing a year of Harry and Dumbledore not being believed etc.

I can't remember if this is explained in the book (I.e. Barty escapes or something)

Also completely agree. I really wish the books were about Hermione, a good strong female lead would have been so much better.

Foenie · 29/09/2018 20:41

Barty Jr was kissed by a Dementor before he could spill the beans for the MoM.

lifechangesforever · 29/09/2018 20:53

As if I don't remember that.. I've read the books at least 15 times and not even that long ago Blush

SweetSummerchild · 29/09/2018 20:55

On a completely separate note, I was trying to compile a (totally pointless) list of actors who have appeared in both Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. So far I’ve got:

Filch/Walder Frey
Aberforth/Mance Rayder
Tonks/Osha
Cormac McLaggen (sp?)/Dickon Tarly (1st casting)

Have I missed anyone or got anyone mixed up with someone else?

Dottysmum18 · 29/09/2018 21:11

@TeenTimesTwo TCC is NOT cannon
But glad u enjoyed the show x

RangeRider · 29/09/2018 21:22

By far. He's so wooden. And they did a good job on the casting otherwise. Emma Watson was perfect for Hermione. But Daniel - I've got rid of all bar the last 3 films as it was painful watching him. I know he looks the part but did they not ask themselves 'can he actually act?'???

Witchend · 29/09/2018 21:43

The whole GoF leading up to there being a portal at the end of the maze was silly.
Why on earth would Voldemort have been happy waiting another year (he doesn't exactly show himself patient in other books) while "Moody" fixed things so he could be in the tournament and win it.
He could have given him a detention to find something in the Forbidden Forest and had that as a portal.

It felt very contrived the whole tournament. It could have worked quite well with it going on in the background and Harry becoming gradually suspicious of things that were happening round Moody, and confronting him, then being pushed into the portal or similar.

The whole school seems to take a pause for a year round the tournament, and as for the students from other schools that are there basically because they didn't get in...

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 29/09/2018 22:52

I do risk assessments at my school-I'm going to have nightmares about tri wizard tournament. Risk-swimming in deep, probably enchanted lake, whilst under the influence of powerful herbal medication.Hazard-death. Action to be taken. In the absence of trained lifeguards, the school does not recommend this activity. Mermaids don't count.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 29/09/2018 23:01

The whole school seems to take a pause for a year round the tournament, and as for the students from other schools that are there basically because they didn't get in...

It's hard to forge lasting international ties with other students if only the champions are there though. I mean, Dumbledore's a bastard, but he did have the occasional laudable idea, like prioritising some non-academic outcomes in his school. God knows what they did for OWL and NEWT students that year though...

TheFluffyHippo · 30/09/2018 00:54

I’ve never understood why Voldemort always waits for the end of the school year to attack. And why, after the third time, nobody anticipated that something dark was going to go down right after exams every year.

Buggerbrexit · 30/09/2018 01:04

@sweetsummerchild

Hermiones Mum is The Stark mum

MidniteScribbler · 30/09/2018 01:36

Harry wouldn't have lasted five minutes without Hermione.

There's a good fanfic where she really is the brains behind everything.

Writersblock2 · 30/09/2018 01:51

Honestly, don’t you people read? 🤨

Firstly, portkeys don’t work inside Hogwarts and so therefore using something in a class wouldn’t work.

And Voldemort hadn’t regained strength by GoF (from his whole horcrux division/Lily’s) protective magic on Harry encounter, hence his need for Harry to be portkeyed over and his blood used to increase Voldemort’s strength.

Also: Voldemort needed to utilise other means in books 1&2 (Prof. Quirrel and Diary/Ginny) hence it taking all year. Not to mention the tradition of children’s literature using school terms/years as a literary function.

10 points to Slytherin?

GunpowderGelatine · 30/09/2018 01:54

@Glitterkitten24 Daniel Radcliffe has said himself he can't watch the earlier Harry Potter films because he's so terrible in them!

AngeloMysterioso · 30/09/2018 04:08

This one’s for you OP

If Hermione Were The Main Character In "Harry Potter"

Also, the guy who plays either Crabbe or Goyle is the one of the first dudes to die in the 1st episode of GoT
