to refuse to pay for 'treatment' at hairdresser

Today I went for a cut and blow dry. I checked how much it would be beforehand and was told £29.50.

Whilst my hair was being washed I was asked if I would like some conditioning treatment. Thinking that I was just being asked if I wanted conditioner or not I said yes please and some conditioner was rubbed into my hair for a couple of minutes. No mention was made of price

When I went to pay I was charged £46.50. when I asked why it was so much I was told the 'treatment' was £17

WIBU to refuse to pay?

Ywnbu

brainstormer123 · 28/09/2018 21:08

Absolutely not! More power to you as this has happened to me before and I just paid, feeling to embarrassed to say 'actually the way you worded the treatment implied it was for free'. They really get you with it. It's abit of a disgrace if you ask me!

shakeyourcaboose · 28/09/2018 21:09

Absolutely not!!is a bloody rip off!

Lollypop701 · 28/09/2018 21:09

Yes! Go you. Don’t offer a service at an additional cost without quoting price. Lots of people would be too embarrassed to tell them they are cf... again go you!

jellyandsoup · 28/09/2018 21:10

No i hate this! Then when you say no thry act all surprised

Gardai · 28/09/2018 21:11

I knew a salon that did this, fucking rip off.
Very sneaky, defo say not paying.

Member869894 · 28/09/2018 21:12

ogh good. I'm glad you agree as the girl who did my hair was lovely and I felt mean but I just cant afford £46.50 and felt it was a piss take

They always offer me treatments and never mention the price, unless I ask them. I don’t like it at all. It feels dishonest.

Yanbu. Though it’s common practice, it’s shitty.

Merryoldgoat · 28/09/2018 21:14

My salon asks but says how much it costs and I generally refuse.

MeanTangerine · 28/09/2018 21:16

That happened to me once. I didn't have the balls to refuse to pay, I just never went back. Well done.

Belindabauer · 28/09/2018 21:17

That is very cheeky of them.

Rainycloudyday · 28/09/2018 21:19

Good on you - hopefully if enough people stand up to that horrible practice they will lose out enough times that they stop risking it. They are banking on people being too British to say anything. In any case I would think it would be a fiver or something, not nearly as much as the haircut!! They were being CFs and you did absolutely the right thing calling them out on it!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/09/2018 21:19

You definitely NBU. I'm not expert but surely under consumer laws that was a type of deception and mis leading. She asked you if you wanted a treatment and didn't state there'd be any extra price and certainly not nye on £20 more. Supposing you only had the bare money on you.

FanciedAChangeToday · 28/09/2018 21:25

Well done you!! I would have been stupid and annoyed myself by paying, then fumed for hours - how did they react when you said no?

bimbobaggins · 28/09/2018 21:26

Yanbu. Good for you for refusing. What did they say?

Member869894 · 28/09/2018 21:30

well I think that was the most annoying Fancied The lovely girl who cut my hair said she would talk to her manger and came back within seconds and said her manger was prepared to take nine pounds off.

I said in that case would she mind telling her manager I was only was 'prepared' to pay the price I had been quoted. She went off and in seconds came back and said that that was fine.

It left a really bad taste in my mouth and I won't be going back

My salon offer ‘treatments’ current one being Diamond Dust, which I always say yes to because it definitely does add a lovely shine which is great if I’m going in before a night out. However, when they ask they always make it very clear how much extra it costs, so, yanbu.

landisfur · 28/09/2018 21:32

good for you OP! i've had this "tried on" by hairdressers many times over the years. we must all be sheep for them to think they can get away with it, perhaps many people are ....

Dixiechickonhols · 28/09/2018 21:33

Well done for standing up and not paying. I'd leave a review online aswell to warn others and say it's cost them a repeat customer.

BewareOfDragons · 28/09/2018 21:33

YWNBU.

I hope they apologised for their deceptive (sneaky) behaviour when you called them on it!

Herculesfan · 28/09/2018 21:36

I got caught out at Christmas time with a toner. I went in for a full head of lights (£85) and when she was explaining what she would do she said ‘and then a toner will tone down the lights and it will be really lovely’ great says I and then when I got to the till after found the bill to be £105- the bloody toner was an extra £20. I paid it because my baby was screaming outside in the car so didn’t have time to argue but I was so angry.

artemisdubois · 28/09/2018 21:38

You weren't unreasonable at all in refusing to pay.

I've encountered a bit of a hard sell on extra treatments at salons, which is bad enough, but to not even mention the additional charge is totally unacceptable. £17 extra for a conditioning treatment on a £29 cut is not cool.

amazinggracey · 28/09/2018 21:42

£17 for a conditioning treatment is a bloody rip off too!

My salon offer conditioning treatments but I always ask how much. Sometimes if I'm feeling flush I'll take it but most times I say no.

Well done for standing your ground OP.

Fluffyears · 28/09/2018 22:18

Yeah hav this before. It wasn’t the rainbow room was it? They are targeted on selling products and treatments. I’m wise to it now but go to a nice local salon in my village who don’t do stuff like thisX

Teacherlikemisstrunchball · 28/09/2018 22:23

Rush salons are dreadful for the hard sell. Last time I went to one the hairdresser kept telling me my hair was in terrible condition and tried to sell me no less than four different products at around £20 each. I stood my ground because I’ve always been told at the hairdressers that I have lovely hair (and lovely nails as well apparently Grin when I go and get those done) and I knew she was just going for her commission. Have not been back as I found it so off putting. I like relaxing at the hairdressers, not being used as a marketing opportunity.
