to think it might be best not to book a holiday in the EU?

I'm planning next year's summer holiday and as I'm reaching the point of booking things I'm hesitating because of the Brexit situation. Am I right in thinking that if there's no deal it could be a complete ball ache? I really don't want a load of stress in having to sort extra things out ahead of the holiday - especially if everyone else with a European holiday is doing it too.

It's De Efteling, by the way.

I've booked a UK holiday for next year just to be safe!

Ignore anything that comes out of the mouth of a hysterical remoaner.

According to them our sky will be empty of planes, our chemists will have no medication, our shops will have nothing on the shelves, and our electric and gas will be cut off.

Don't panic though, none of it will actually happen.

Jason118 · 28/09/2018 23:09

Because bridge says soConfused

wherearemychickens · 28/09/2018 23:10

Where is the evidence that that won't happen in the case of no-deal bridgetoc? All I can see is legal implications that mean it will? Third country means third country.

If we manage to scrape through the Withdrawal Agreement, we're in different territory, I agree - then we've just put the cliff edge back to Dec 2020 and get to do this all over again. Whoopee.

theymademejoin · 29/09/2018 00:15

The potential problems are nothing to do with visas, passports or driving licences. If there is a deal, it will be fine as the change well be planned and gradual.

However, if there is no deal, it means that the current agreements regarding air travel will no longer apply to the UK as the agreements are either internal EU rules or deals between the EU and other countries. If there is no deal, then these agreements no longer apply to the UK and new ones need to be cobbled together between the UK and each country. These cannot happen overnight and travel will be suspended until such time as new agreements are reached.

TheSageofOnions · 29/09/2018 00:33

We're going to Germany next year. Haven't given Brexit any thought at all. The tunnel will still be open, passports are still valid and if visas are needed, well we'll get them, same as we do for (say) the US.

What’s your alternative plan, OP? Travelling outside of the EU? I can’t see that being much easier.

CoughLaughFart · 29/09/2018 00:59

So the government and European law experts have no clue how this will pan out, but it’s fine - we can all stop worrying because some random nobody on Mumsnet says so, despite the lack of a shred of evidence.

safariboot · 29/09/2018 01:09

Fuck knows.

I wouldn't book a holiday during or shortly after Brexit day. But I expect that even our incompetent government will figure something out by next summer.

bridgetoc · 29/09/2018 01:46

@Justask

I agree with one part of your post. The bit that says that NHS management are clueless.

Don't we all know it.......

Smeghead? Cockwomble? Grin

Totallypearshaped · 29/09/2018 01:57

You can still take a ferry/cruise?

Just the planes will be grounded because there will be no insurance.

I think you’re all up shit creek and feel terribly sorry for all of you in the U.K. there’s no plan and there will be no deal and the whole thing is such a sorry mess it’s tragic.

I’m not in the U.K., just looking on in horror... the U.K. press is so biased and untrue, you’re all being played.

I’d get out now.

Bridgetoc is talking out her arse.

ilovesooty · 29/09/2018 02:03

I can't take any comments seriously from someone who still thinks the term remoaner is witty.

bridgetoc · 29/09/2018 02:17

@Totallypearsgaped

I'll gladly come back on Mumsnet and admit I'm an arse if a single plane is grounded. There wont be though. The only arse will be you and the other remoaners who will all crawl back under your stones when doomsday doesn't happen

Get a grip. You come across as hysterical. Grin

ilovesooty · 29/09/2018 02:54

More clichés.

bellinisurge · 29/09/2018 08:11

Prepper AND a Remainer- I'm all those things.
And I've booked a holiday in Europe in May.
I'm old so roaming/not roaming doesn't matter to me.
I'm flying with the evil RyanAir who are not a UKcompany but flying out of the UK.
I'm getting a revised IDP in February- not available yet and the current ones won't be applicable.
I'm slowly buying Euro now for our holiday cash stash.
While I expect mine and DH's Irish passports to be back by then, I am not certain that DD's Irish foreign birth registration and consequent Irish passport will be done by then so I'm assuming we will travel on our British passports.
I am assuming that some sort of legal solution will be cobbled together for the flights.
I have family/friend connections where we are going so I am hoping that will help with any local wrinkles.
The worst that can happen is we can't go.
The worst that can happen when we are there (aside from unrelated to Brexit mayhem and death randomly heading our way) is we get stranded. I will take British and Irish embassy numbers with me.
I've lived in and through some tricky situations abroad in my youth and young adult life.
I'm a big girl and I want some sun in May/June half term.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/09/2018 08:38

We have booked an apartment in Spain for 2 weeks in June but not the flights. Waiting to see what happens.

celticmissey · 29/09/2018 08:47

So more than half the country are idiots are they🙄? Blame the government for not negotiating harder and the EU for trying to make it as hard as possible to leave so other countries don't leave either.

Poloshot · 29/09/2018 08:50

😂😂 dry your eyes

wherearemychickens · 29/09/2018 09:30

The EU are perfectly happy to let us leave - there's even a staircase of options that's been on the table for months and months. Our government's completely inability to fundamentally decide whether they want high access to trade/close alignment on regulation, or low access to trade/the ability to diverge is nothing to do with the EU. Theresa May has made strategic error after error, and boxed herself in with her redlines.

Oblomov18 · 29/09/2018 09:38

JustAsk : "People I know in NHS management are clueless as to how to provide insulin in the event of no deal. "

Do you honestly think this will be an issue? I know there will be disruption. But really, insulin supplies, stopped? That can't happen. Surely?

Oblomov18 · 29/09/2018 09:40

Would the EU allow it to get to the stage of any medical supplies being in short supply?

No fan of Theresa May. But as a diabetic, she's hardly going to allow insulin supplies to stop, is she?

SillySallySingsSongs · 29/09/2018 09:43

Has there been a suggestion of queues? This is exactly the type of thing I'm put off by.

There can be queues anyway with or without Brexit!

m00rfarm · 29/09/2018 09:43

I think you are worrying unnecessarily. Do you really think that all the governments in the rest of the EU will prevent UK passport holders from traveling to their countries and spending lots of money? I really don't think so.

ThomasRichard · 29/09/2018 09:47

I was going to take the kids back to De Efteling next year but bottled it and booked the Peak District instead. Hopefully any chaos will be sorted out before the summer holiday but I can do without the stress of worrying about it.

I’m currently doing my budget planning for work next year and am squeezing as much of my team’s required travel as possible into January-March. One of them is supposed to be flying out to Brazil on 30th March but is going on the 27th instead to avoid the chaos. I’ve been through it with them and they know they might be stuck there for a few days on the way back Confused
