I was sat and all of a sudden my eyesight in my left eye went funny.'it started like I couldn't see probably ..like a bit of my vision was gone (like I couldn't focus ) a few minutes late I started seeing flashing zig Zags and then my whole left eye was full of blurriness and flashing lights.
It lasted 30 mins then went away.
That's not normal is it?
What is it?

Sounds like a migraine.

TwinsetBeck · 28/09/2018 11:41

Sounds like I migraine to me. You can have them without the headache.

OhForCodsHake · 28/09/2018 11:42

I get migraine with aura, which is all the flashing lights/numbness etc, but without the headache.

DriftingLeaves · 28/09/2018 11:42

Migraine - that's how mine start.

Amanduh · 28/09/2018 11:42

Migraine. Exactly what I get.

justilou1 · 28/09/2018 11:42

Migraine or detached retina. You need to see a GP.

littlewoollypervert · 28/09/2018 11:43

Ocular migraine. Colleague has them and describes them as "a disco in one eye"!

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/09/2018 11:44

It could also be a small TIA (mini stroke) - mine lasted a similar amout of time. I would ring 111 just to be sure

PeakedTooEarly · 28/09/2018 11:44

Migraine. I went totally blind for about four minutes at a car boot sale once. Luckily I was with my DDad and we sat down and chilled and it came back but with flashing chevrons. An hour later it was gone and I have only ever had mild flashing chevrons a couple of times since.

Youshallnotpass · 28/09/2018 11:45

Optical migraine, I get those. It's like lightning striking across your vision.

Needlemaker · 28/09/2018 11:45

Please go to drs to get checked out it's probably an overreaction but I got diagnosed with transient ischemischemic attacks 6 months ago due to loosing the vision in my left eye in a similar fashion and it wasn't unill I had all the tests mri, carteroid artery scan ect that i was diagnosed

Dontrocktheboat · 28/09/2018 11:46

I get this when I'm tired, I think it is a migraine aura without the headache. I saw a neurologist about it 9 years or so ago, as I have a dodgy family history where neurological symptoms are concerned, but I have been getting it v intermittently for over 15 years. It always lasts under 20 minutes and is fairly reliably associated with tiredness (more when my kids were babies!) and sometimes glancing at a bright/ fluorescent light.
If you are concerned may be worth seeing a doctor if it happens again though.

Needlemaker · 28/09/2018 11:46

Damded auto correct transient ischemic attacks

LadyKilbarron · 28/09/2018 11:47

I used to get this and was diagnosed with glaucoma. It's managed with eyedrops and there has been no significant deterioration in my vision but it's something that should not be ignored. Your GP can refer you to a specialist if needed.

Birdsgottafly · 28/09/2018 11:47

I agree that it could be a migraine, if you have no other physical symptoms.

I started getting similar symptoms in both eyes and it turned out that I had really low Vitamin/Mineral levels.

pinipol · 28/09/2018 11:56

This isn't the first time this has happened
I've had it about 5 times in 6 years.

Every time it stops I end up with a headache after and my neck is really sore.
The last few days I've felt really tired with a sickly feeling.

SoyDora · 28/09/2018 11:58

It sounds just like my aura migraines.

Osirus · 28/09/2018 11:59

I had this recently for the first time. It was a very bright day and I was outside. At first I thought it was the light reflecting on my rimless lenses but when I took my glasses off I was alarmed it was actually my eye! I was feeling a bit stressed and anxious at the time and I didn’t have a headache at all. Probably a combination of different things for me, but very weird at the time.

pinipol · 28/09/2018 12:00

I'm also really stressed and anxious at the minute too.

cardiffqueen · 28/09/2018 12:00

You've had it a few times, now, I'm really surprised you haven't worked out that it's a migraine! You have an absolutely classic migraine with aura. Unpleasant, but not dangerous.

pinipol · 28/09/2018 12:11

Tbh I always thought a classic migraine was vomiting and a excruciating headache.

SoyDora · 28/09/2018 12:12

There are different types of migraine. Yours sounds exactly like an aura migraine. I get around 1 a year.

Loonoon · 28/09/2018 12:29

I had migraines like that on and off for a while, completely painless but very scary. It can also be a symptom of a detached retina. I had it all checked out at the time and they passed after a couple of years but was told very decidedly that if they reoccur I should present in A&E in case my retina has detached (I am high risk apparently).

I have only had one occurrence in the last 10 years. I am a psychotherapist and was working with a client who had completely lost touch with the real world and lived in a fantasy land where he was super talented, attractive and alpha male rather than a bit spiteful, unattractive and isolated. During a session with him the symptoms came on so acutely I couldn’t actually see him, only the walls around her seat. As soon as I showed him out and sat down in the office my vision returned. I think it was a very powerful counter transference experience of their determined refusal to see or face reality. (NB - I have changed some details to preserve client confidentiality. )

Supermummy06 · 28/09/2018 12:33

This is what happens with me when I have a migraine. Left eye starts feeling funny, then starts going all fuzzy and can’t see anything for about 20 minutes.. that then goes away and the awful headache starts
