To think school should have rung me?

Turn up to after school club tonight at half 5 to be told DS10 has had an accident at lunch time and his arm has been put in a sling
He’d fallen awkwardly on it playing football and had told them the pain was a 9 out of 10.
He’d been asked if he could have calpol, he said he could, but wasn’t given any.
A teaching assistant had to sit with him all afternoon because he couldn’t hold a pencil to write because of the pain.
No one rang me, I was at work but had my mobile on my desk and the school have my office number too.
I would’ve come and picked him up early had I known. Instead he was at school, in pain, all afternoon.
I took him to a&e straight from school because of how much pain he was in and he has fractured his wrist.
I cant work out why they didn’t call me

That really is very bad, other school must have known that it was more than a sore wrist bless him. As a parent, we all know that sometimes children overreact when they are in pain, but that’s not a risk the school should take. What on earth would happen if a child banged their head and had concussion. I think a talk to the head teacher is definitely necessary.

In response to the lady who says ‘The School should have taken him straight to A&E’... do you really think that schools would do that every time a child hurt themselves?

I agree OP, that you should have been contacted. I am a first aider and anything that we’re not sure of is reported.

ineedtocalm · 30/09/2018 12:46

Edit.. by not sure of.. I mean we obviously do make a record of every single thing that happens, even the tiny things. (These are sent in a message home). But if even the slightest of doubt, a phone call home

I'm sorry, but this thread is bothering me.

I will follow things up with an email to the head probably with an attachment for correct sling fittings- DS says the first aider did say it had been ages since she’d done a sling plus it wasn’t the right position for his injury

moredoll · 30/09/2018 14:22

Sorry posted too soon

As posters here who are First Aiders have said, it is no longer considered good practice to put any kind of sling on other than to bind to the body, and has not been for years. A First Aider is a member of school staff who will havebattended a short course in first aid. It's up to them to decide whether or not a medical diagnosis is needed, not to try and treat the injury themselves if it might be serious.

I will be making sure the school update their policy on when to contact parents and that their first aiders know up to date information re limb injuries

And hopefully with all other injuries. As pp had mentioned would you trust this person to recognise concussion and respond appropriately? Allergic reaction?

Your son's school needs to address their First Aid policy as a matter of urgency. I think it's lucky in a way that this incompetence came to light through the hopefully straightforward injury of a broken wrist. (Not lucky for your son of course. I hope he is feeling better and I wish him a speedy recovery.)

When I say that this person should be removed from their post I mean from their post as First Aider not from their role on the school staff. I would have thought that obvious.

OhFlipMama · 30/09/2018 14:30

Shocking. There's no way a child in school would be left with a sling and parents not informed. Poor thing, hope he heals very quickly.

It may be worth checking the dates on the first aiders certificates. I did a basic course years ago, and I recall that whatever level you did, the training was only valid for a maximum of 3 years.

Happygummibear · 30/09/2018 22:06

It is recommended that first aiders do a 2 day yearly refresher course.

However with the proposal to add in to the curriculum that all pupils are taught resuscitation hopefully that will mean the first aiders can join in regularly to keep their skills up to date and fresh.

Blameanamechange · 30/09/2018 22:20

Thats poor practise. Id go straight to the headteacher to look into. Even if it was a communication problem someone should have taken responsibility for following up why he hadnt been collected. Being in pain a whole after without medical attention is dispicable.

Nondescriptname · 30/09/2018 23:26

The main thing for me is that DS is ok, the delay did him no long term damage- we had another 4 hours at a&e after I’d picked him up anyway.

No thanks to the school that there's no long-term damage. And the wait at A&E could have started a lot sooner, if they'd called you.

Suppose he'd banged his head, would they have let him sit around while concussion set in?
Would you be okay with that too?

LilyChantilly · 01/10/2018 17:24

Any updates OP? Have you had a chance to speak to anyone at the school today? It is really concerning, especially after reading what moredoll had to say...
