To Risk Upsetting Other Travellers

I am going back to work at the end of October and am looking to squeeze in a last minute holiday before I go back. We will be flying long haul and have an 8 month old baby.

We usually fly premium economy when we travel with TUI because I'm not great with large groups of people. WIBU to take an infant into premium economy? I feel like people would be cross if she made any noise when they've paid out for an upgrade, presumably for a calmer and more enjoyable experience. The baby doesn't usually cry for any length of time but she's never flown before.

@ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers
I didn't know that thank you Smile

ButchyRestingFace · 27/09/2018 21:50

Given that it's the airlines that make the rules, babies are actually absolutely fine in business class.

Yes, that's what I said. Confused

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:50

@AynRandTheObjectivist
I would be happy to pay more for a quiet area on a plane where there were no young children.

DeborahDowner · 27/09/2018 21:52

Definitely Premium economy and the bassinet seats at the bulkhead if your baby meets the weight allowance for it. Go for it! You don’t have to be relegated to the back for having a child for goodness sake!!

TonnoEMaionese · 27/09/2018 21:54

I like a lot of people will fly into somewhere for one meeting then somewhere else for another one.

Ah, well, I'd do that for an hour's flight if I had to in an emergency, but as a rule I wouldn't accept it if it meant I was missing out on sleep. If my company want me on the ball, they can pay for me to have time to prepare - and if they can't treat their employees that well, then I'm surprised they're shelling out for business class anyway.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:56

@TonnoEMaionese
I own the company so it doesn't work that way.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 27/09/2018 21:57

Put it to the airlines. In the meantime, hire a private jet if you're so rich and important. Otherwise, slum it with the rest of ordinary society.

TonnoEMaionese · 27/09/2018 21:58

Aaahhh - well, I own mine, and it does for me (or rather my clients who pay for my flights as a rule), and I don't expect other people to put themselves at the back of the plane so I can save my company money..

It all becomes clear.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:58

@AynRandTheObjectivist
I'm not saying I'm important I just think there should be somewhere where people can get some sleep.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:59

@TonnoEMaionese
It isn't about saving money at all.
It's about getting more business to support my employees.

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 27/09/2018 21:59

I travel business class with my 2 boys. Always have done. They aren't disruptive as they have their own space and just sleep or play quietly together. In economy, they would be a nightmare.

I've had eye rolling and sighing when passengers see then there, but nothing has come from it since they behave. If understand the annoyance if they were loud or unruly though.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 27/09/2018 21:59

Yes, that's what I said.

No, you said that in your opinion, babies were not fine in Business but accepted that the airlines didn't agree. It's not actually a subjective issue. The airlines make the rules, and they decide what is fine and what is not. So as long as babies are allowed in Business, babies in Business are, in fact, objectively and absolutely, fine.

On any given day, if I encounter obnoxious and antisocial behaviour, it is very very rarely a young child.

CarolDanvers · 27/09/2018 22:01

Take your child in whatever class you want to. Honestly what kind of entitled person says someone can’t do that? Presumably you’ll be caring for and pacifying your baby. Do what you want.

TonnoEMaionese · 27/09/2018 22:02

It isn't about saving money at all.
It's about getting more business to support my employees.

But to do so, you're expecting other people to accommodate your desires by not sitting in the same area as you, so you can sleep.

I'd just invest in some noise cancelling headphones (the bose are excellent) and mind your own business if I were you (and in fact, that's exactly what I do)

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 22:02

@Fiffyshadesofgreymatter
I don't mind kids in business if they are quiet.

Helipad · 27/09/2018 22:02

The PE will be full of children as it is so just go for it! Especially if it’s tui, it’ll be full of families anyway.

We fly business every now so often, BA business lounges you see a lot more families these days. There’s even a separate playroom for kids (the ones I’ve been to).

We even got upgraded to First on our most recent flight - kids included!

AynRandTheObjectivist · 27/09/2018 22:03

I'm not saying I'm important I just think there should be somewhere where people can get some sleep.

It's public transport. There's a couple of expensive options whereby people get beds as such. Anyone who can pay it can have it.

If you think there should be an adult only section, suggest it to the airlines. Until they implement your suggestion, either accept that everyone else has as much right to be there as you, even if they are a lot younger, or hire your own plane.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 22:04

@TonnoEMaionese
If everyone minded their own business there would be no mumsnet.

The OP asked for opinions and I gave mine.

What is the problem with that?

ButchyRestingFace · 27/09/2018 22:05

Yes, in my opinion babies are not fine in Business class and the airline - who may the rules - don't agree with me. Fairly inoffensive statement, I would have thought, on a thread where the OP is asking for opinions.

You seem like one of those people who could pick a fight in an empty house. Crack on. I won't be replying to you again. Hmm

Nothing, but as you say, this is mumsnet - I have an opinion on your opinion, and I'm free to express it.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 22:08

@ButchyRestingFace
Good on you for holding your ground.

Apparently if we have different opinions we should mind our own business!

Alwa · 27/09/2018 22:08

TUI premium economy isn't anything like normal business class.

Just slightly more leg room.

Go for it.

ButchyRestingFace · 27/09/2018 22:09

Hopefully OP is up the front behind the bulkheads and won't be affected by any recliners with the same POV. Grin
