To Risk Upsetting Other Travellers

I am going back to work at the end of October and am looking to squeeze in a last minute holiday before I go back. We will be flying long haul and have an 8 month old baby.

We usually fly premium economy when we travel with TUI because I'm not great with large groups of people. WIBU to take an infant into premium economy? I feel like people would be cross if she made any noise when they've paid out for an upgrade, presumably for a calmer and more enjoyable experience. The baby doesn't usually cry for any length of time but she's never flown before.

It turns out people are more understanding than I thought. I was expecting this to go a lot more, 'what kind of cockwomble brings an infant onto a plane anyway'.

I'm just worried that someone will say something and I'll get upset and embarrass myself. Baby doesn't usually cry, at least, and if she does I'd try to console/distract her.

it'd be so upsetting to have paid extra and still have a crying baby.

Heartbreaking. Who would you cast in that movie?

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:17

@zzzzz
I always travel business class if I have a meeting straight from the plane. I go business so I can sleep and feel better when I arrive. I know a lot of people who do the same.

I think kids should be aloud in first or premium class just not business class.

Justletmego · 27/09/2018 21:18

Its fine, we are taking both children (3 and 11 months) business class each with their own seat for a longhaul soon.

trumpetoftheswan · 27/09/2018 21:20

And maybe people with babies who fly business class have their own reasons for doing so? @zzzzz is right - infants and children are allowed in business class.

FallingForRosie · 27/09/2018 21:21

In my experience the premium economy seats often have a bulkhead row with basinets, so actively set up for small children.

If you are doing a long flight, the more comfortable you are, the happier baby will be.

I'd recommend either a bottle or breast on take off and landing, it will help with the pressure on their ears.

Book away and enjoy.

If you think you're so rich that you should be able to dictate how families fly, just hire a private jet.

Children are part of society, deal with it. At least they've got an excuse when they whinge and whine because they don't get their way.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 27/09/2018 21:23

YANBU. Premium Economy is for whoever can afford it! I'd bring kids in first if I could afford that. Though I would make sure they were well behaved; but I do that in economy anyway.

mumsastudent · 27/09/2018 21:23

or use dummy - actually I think the worst passengers are the noisy antisocial drunks...

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:23

@trumpetoftheswan
Why can't they go in a different class??
I wouldn't bring kids in business as it is for people who are flying for business reasons usually meaning it's the only time they will get sleep.

Rudgie47 · 27/09/2018 21:23

Your money is as good as anyone else's and babies are part and parcel of life.
Passengers have to accept that there might be some disruption or other. If they don't like it then they should pay for a private flight.

slithytove · 27/09/2018 21:23

It’s fine

No, it's for anyone who can afford the fee and is willing to pay it. I've never flown anything other than cattle class but I've still had to be alert the day I arrive for various reasons. That's my problem.

Of course it’s fine! In whatever class. I don’t really get why other passengers would be annoyed, if you’re travelling without kids surely you have headphones on and are blissfully unaware of babies crying etc.
Plus at that age your baby will prob be asleep a lot of the time!

Parker231 · 27/09/2018 21:30

My DT’s have travelled in business class since being babies. Anyone can travel in any class; the only criteria is whether you are prepared to pay the price of the ticket. Business class has nothing to do with whether you are traveling to a meeting.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 27/09/2018 21:30

Even if the baby does cry...so fucking what? Babies exist, they're part of society, and sometimes they cry. Unless you advocate for new mothers to stay under house arrest, just deal. Chances are that your face isn't the most pleasant thing other people will have to look at that day but they, like you, can deal with it.

Of course, if you know a failsafe way to stop a baby from crying, share your knowledge and become very rich. If you can't do it either, get the fuck over yourself and buy a private jet if you're so rich and important.

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:31

@zzzzz
Yes but there should be somewhere that doesn't allow children so there is a place for people who are flying and need to sleep on the flight.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 27/09/2018 21:32

Of course take the baby in premium economy. We’ve flown with ours in business class when she was younger but now find getting her a seat in premium, so we can have an entire row of 3 and plonk her in the middle, is the most comfortable configuration for all involved. You surely do your best to keep your baby happy and to be considerate of other passengers regardless of travel class?! It doesn’t suddenly become acceptable to blare out Peppa Pig without headphones or to leave a baby screaming in a bassinet just because you’re in economy and not first class Confused

MarthasGinYard · 27/09/2018 21:32

This is premium economy on a charter Airline

Of course it's ok

pinktissuepaper · 27/09/2018 21:33

YANBU - I've been in business with babies, they have as much right to be there as anyone else. Take your baby in PE and have a lovely holiday!

newmummy0094 · 27/09/2018 21:33

@Parker231
Business class was designed for people who are traveling for business reasons.

TakeMe2Insanity · 27/09/2018 21:35

My theory is if the airline is willing to sell you a ticket then you shouldn’t feel ashamed/upset etc. Fyi, we’ve travelled business class with our son since he was 12 weeks old and is now 3. Why? Because there is more space, he is less likely to stick his nose through to the seat infront. He relaxes more, we relax and then we all enjoy the flight. Go ahead and book.

AynRandTheObjectivist · 27/09/2018 21:35

Business class was designed for people who are traveling for business reasons.

And it is sold to anyone who wants to pay for it, like pretty much any product or service.

Boxer shorts were designed for men but I have every right to purchase and wear a pair of those if I so choose.
