Not one of her best. My god it goes on, and it doesn't even rhyme. And it's boring. And the plot is actually quite shit.

Aibu to give it to the charity shop and hope my toddler doesn't notice? Would rather read What the Ladybird Heard for the 177th time.

Just read the princess and the wizard to dd2 for the 100th time. Both mine have loved it - well most of the JD actually.
I'm not a fan of the smartest giant in town. All the repetition drives me nuts. Quite find of Charlie cook.

Peacockfeathers789 · 27/09/2018 20:42

Spinderella goes on and on! Pointless storyline as well. DS is obsessed with spiders though so I have to read it every. bloody. night.

ElspethTascioni · 27/09/2018 20:42

Reading the paper dolls to my DD always makes me well up...Our favourite is squash and a squeeze, we mostly just sing it though!

zeebeedee · 27/09/2018 20:48

Some of them have different rhythms don't they - we love Room on the Broom, Charlie Cook and Snail and the Whale, but I also really like Jack and the Flumflum tree, but you have to read it differently!

Paper Dolls makes my eyes bright too...

PiperPublickOccurrences · 27/09/2018 20:49

I've still not forgiven her for rhyming "scarf" and "giraffe" in the Smartest Giant in Town.

And given that she wrote it when she was living just down the road from us in Glasgow, she really should have known better.

Love Room on the Broom though.

WickedGirl · 27/09/2018 20:51

Paper dolls is sad, I don’t like it

I love room on a broom and squash and a squeeze

RavenWings · 27/09/2018 20:51

Yes, the scarf and giraffe thing pisses me off. When I taught infants that bit always confused them, with all the lovely rhyming that had gone on before!

junebirthdaygirl · 27/09/2018 20:54

Superworm is my favourite. All young children l have read it to love it especially the scary bit.

BrickByBrick · 27/09/2018 20:54

I quite like it. Blush

DrWhy · 27/09/2018 20:54

This is a really useful thread to know which to go for! DS loves Room on the Broom and the Snail and the Whale and so do I, Gruffalo I don’t mind and we have read What the Ladyburd heard every night for the last two weeks so it’s a good job I like that too. Sounds like there are some to steer clear of though!

HidingFromMyKids · 27/09/2018 20:55

I'm so bored of sugarlump and the unicorn and snail and the whale felt really gloomy to me

Don't mind sharing a shell

Love zog

herethereandeverywhere · 27/09/2018 20:56

Paper Dolls makes me cry, every time Blush

I get choked up when the little girl grows up then I can't read any more.

I definitely read huge amounts of deeper meaning into it though!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/09/2018 20:58

Monkey Puzzle, Stick Man, Snail & The Whale I love.
Highway Rat is a bag of shite.

LikeSilver · 27/09/2018 20:58

I like The Princess and the Wizard! But only because I do a voice for the wizard and it makes my kids giggle when I shout ‘YOU STUPID BOOK!’ in said voice Grin

HidingFromMyKids · 27/09/2018 20:59

And the rhyming rabbit that no one else has mentioned?! Am I the only one subjected to that

glenthebattleostrich · 27/09/2018 20:59

We got paper dolls when my grandmother died. It was a perfect way for DD to understand loss. I cry every time I read it because my nana was the kind granny.

Also love gruffalo, Charlie cook, the troll (who I always read in a Brummie accent), room on the broom and squash and a squeeze. Snail and the whale and sharing a shell are good too

QueenDoria · 27/09/2018 20:59

There is glitter, though?

Monkeymonstermum · 27/09/2018 20:59

We love Tiddler!

I didn’t ‘get’ Charlie cook and the trolls until we got the CD with the songs and now I love it!

redcaryellowcar · 27/09/2018 21:01

So many other brilliant authors available, try rob biddulph for rhyming books like 'sunk' or 'blown away' or 'odd dog out'

StripyHorse · 27/09/2018 21:03

So glad it's not just me with Paper Dolls!!!

Before long you might find yourself having to wade through Peppa Pig or other TV tie in books night after night after night after (well you get the picture) ... they are soul destroying!

And don't even get me started on bloody Biff, Chip and Kipper!

Yerroblemom1923 · 27/09/2018 21:07

Paper Dolls is a beautiful book! The kind granny makes me cry every time and since the MIL died my dd doesn't want me to read it anymore.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/09/2018 21:07

Tyrannosaurus Drip is a good one. Rhyming Rabbit & Troll just didn’t hit the spot.

MayorHumdinger · 27/09/2018 21:08

Huge JD household here... Snail and the Whale is my son's favourite and Tabby McTat is my daughter's favourite. But we loves most of her books.

I'm a not a great fan of the fox who loses his socks. I feel the rhymes in that are clutching a straws and i can't even begin to imagine what fox was up to the night before!!

Whedon · 27/09/2018 21:11

I find most of them really boring - love Paper Dolls though, and Cave Baby's a good one.

CheerfulMuddler · 27/09/2018 21:12

Oh God, Paper Dolls made me cry.
We love JD. Tiddler, Snail and the Whale, Stick Man and The Gruffalo are my favourites.
