I’ve let myself go

I’ve put on 2 stone and I’ve just got really out of breath just putting a load on the washing machine. I need to sort myself out but feel like I’m at the bottom of an impossible mountain. AIBU to ask if anyone has ever let this happen to them? He did you turn it around? How can I motivate myself? What works.

I’m joining you op. I’ve gained 2 stone (maybe more?!) in last year :( I feel like a frumpy mess and don’t feel comfortable in hardly any of my clothes. I’ve joined a gym but still eating too much, too much wine, biscuits

TrudeauGirl · 27/09/2018 13:24

Hello Smile

Don't feel bad this happens to a lot of people. When I gained weight and got a bit unhealthy i went to slimming world and lost the 1 stone or 2 that i'd gained.

Start by cutting down on snacks that are full of sugar and try and figure out what exercise you might find the most enjoyable. Even if it's just a nice walk every evening. Carry on with that and you'll soon lose the weight.

Blackberry10 · 27/09/2018 13:25

The same op and can’t remember last time I put makeup on. Need to give myself a kick up the arse

LanguidLobster · 27/09/2018 13:26

It's OK sweetheart, baby steps.

Start looking at things like diet, gradually walking a bit more, keeping a diary of it. It won't happen overnight, be patient

It's a bit like that Chinese saying of a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, or however it was!

Ultimately you want to be healthier and feel better about yourself

eco1636 · 27/09/2018 13:27

Yoga, preferredly vinyasa floe. Believe me!

Fatasfook · 27/09/2018 13:29

Thanks so much for being kind to me, I feel like joining a slimming club just wouldn’t work, I know that I would find excuses not to go every week.

Slimming world. Can't recommend it enough. I lost 2 stone in 9 weeks after ds. Have gained weight again from dd and am currently 10lb down after 3 weeks.

Good luck x

pangolina · 27/09/2018 13:35

Just take it one step at a time. Eat only when hungry, drink as much water as you can, try different exercise to find something you like.
Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred on youtube is great for visible results but you may need to build up to it a bit first

bridgetreilly · 27/09/2018 13:37

Well, what do you want, to lose weight or to be fitter? Weight is mostly about diet, fitness about exercise. If you want both, you have to do both.

NorthenderNamechanger · 27/09/2018 13:41

Oh I'm with you, I've put on a stone. There goes my plan of being slim and fashionable on the school run. (Being chubs and fashionable is an option but would require me buying new clothes)

It's totally do-able OP. Cut out snacks and unnecessary sugars, do a bit of exercise if you fancy it, walk more etc.

Just approach your life and health as a whole. Don't rely on one thing to work because if it falls down you'll feel hopeless.

Find something you like. I like cooking from scratch and pop pilates to some good music. It always works for me. I've just been lazy for an entire summer Blush

Fatasfook · 27/09/2018 13:46

I’ve just downloaded MyFitnessPal- it’s a start

As someone who has come through the other side, please try to make yourself feel better! Life is too short to feel crap!

See it as a project. A healthy diet and regular exercise will make you feel great, I promise. You deserve to! I hit 50 and weighed 12st 7lb at 5ft 1in. I'm now 52 and 8st 1lb having maintained for 9mths. Cholesterol and bloody pressure have come right down and I have ribs and collar bones! Constant ache in back has gone. Bloating gone.

I calorie counted and used SW principles. I got a Fitbit and aim to do 10000 steps a day. I dance in my lounge, jog on the spot and fling my arms around holding 1kg weights for 20 mins a day. I still have regular sweet treats.

Look at a Facebook page called PinchofNom for ideas, tips and recipes and treat yourself to non food items regularly. Ebay is great for cheap or second hand feel good clothes on your journey.

Sorry not sorry for evangelising but it's the best thing I've ever done!

Start right now!

primoestate · 27/09/2018 13:54

I was you, OP. In fact, I could barely get back up after crouching down to pull the washing out.
So I quietly, without announcing it to anyone, started eating Keto. And doing small walks, even if they only lasted a few minutes.
One day, about a month later, someone said to me that they'd just driven past me and didn't realize it was me as I'd lost quite a bit, it was such an incentive. Think it went off the back of me first!
Slowly,slowly does it.
I never weighed myself and still haven't. But a year later I've gone from a good, hefty size 18 (in all honesty nothing looked nice and neither did I. Lots of 18's didn't fit me and things weren't available in bigger sizes) to a 14.
Now I walk two 3k walks a day and actually enjoy it, hated it before as it hurt.
The washing machine, my movement, everything is better, much better. I'm still losing at a slow rate but can eat what I want now as the walking keeps it at bay. And next week I'm going back to hardcore keto to shift more fat.
It's been hard to see myself as I am now as I'm so ingrained to believe I'm fat but I'm getting there.
No double chins now, got my waist back, my mobility is massively changed.
I'd be happy to mentor you by PM if you'd like. I know how it feels to feel crap and fat.

primoestate · 27/09/2018 13:56

Oh, and get a Fitbit!!

CoperCabana · 27/09/2018 14:00

I am in a similar place now and was 2.5 years ago. I totally turned myself around then by low carbing, cutting down on wine and walking, tracking 10,000 steps a day on my Fitbit. It went to pot when I picked up two injuries in relatively quick succession and had a string of bad luck. I am just starting again. It took about 6 months last time to get to feeling fit and lose 2.5 stones but I felt a little bit every day. I need to get back there again.

nomorepeoplepleasing · 27/09/2018 14:01

Fastasfook- I could have written your post!

I realised about 2 years ago that I had become unhealthily large, when realised that I needed to stop for a breather to get to the end of my street. I tried a zumba class which I quite enjoyed but ultimately gave up on as I was not losing any weight, and in fact was using it as an excuse to eat more (as I kidded myself I was burning it off). I was adamant that I did not need a slimming club and would just eat more healthily etc.

After 18 months of 'diet starts tomorrow' and conning myself that fatty foods were somehow good for me, or needed as a comfort, bit the bullet and joined Slimming World. I'll never be someone who particularly enjoys going, or who spends my evenings posting my food and encouraging snippets on facebook. I also cringe when the class claps me for losing half a pound. But I am now 2 stones lighter, don't look pregnant, can wear clothes without them cutting in to me, and most importantly can walk around town without getting out of breath. For me it's the fact that I have to face the scales each week, and SOMEONE WILL KNOW (even if they are always very kind) if I just eat cake. There are also lots of tips on how to eat healthily which I could have found out for myself but realistically, probably wouldn't have bothered.

JustMe10 · 27/09/2018 14:01

There's a thread called revenge body anyone? and the OP is offering advice and posting workouts. It's definitely helped my motivation so it's worth a look Smile

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2018 14:03

2 stone is not much. I lost more than that with Paul Mackenna and I have maintained, eating healthily of course, he changes your attitude to your self, to eating, it's a matter of really enjoying your food, eating slowly, sitting down, no screens.

Just sitting down and standing up for 5 mins in the morning and evening strengthens your whole body!

primoestate · 27/09/2018 14:05

Thanks for that info @JustMe10

Mrscog · 27/09/2018 14:06

Just start - don't over think. Go and have a glass of water right now - enjoy the 'healthiness' of it. Then do 10 squats. There - you've started!

Decide on what would be a healthy dinner for later - don't worry about calories yet, just focus on enjoyable but healthy food - mainly cutting out processed snacks - crisps/chocolate etc.

fourplusfour · 27/09/2018 14:12

I am another one who would love to lose weight and get fitter. I was going to regular gym and exercise classes up to about a year ago but as pp said, really used them as an excuse to eat what I want. Just think how big I'd be if I hadn't gone to those classes. I need to lose about 5 stone.

cakecakecheese · 27/09/2018 14:14

A few years ago I realised I was not far away from being classed as obese and I needed to do something about it. Slimming clubs are great for a lot of people but they're not my thing either. I started doing various gym classes and instead of counting calories I just cut down on crap foods and cooked using healthier recipes, the Hairy Bikers diet books were brilliant as the food is tasty and filling. I lost 4 stone.

Snowymountainsalways · 27/09/2018 14:15

Put some make up on, perfume, do your hair and then go out for a power walk right now.

Chuck out every last snack in your house and empty it out into bin liners. No more junk food, no more wine.

Drink several glasses of water between now and bedtime and make a plan for tomorrow's exercise, salad content and do the same again.

JustMe10 · 27/09/2018 14:19

@Fatasfook no problem and I've been using my fitness pal as well and so far so good Smile
