Aibu to think this is not how I should expect to collect my case at the airport?

Name changed as outing. Arrived back from holiday yesterday. This is how my case was when I collected it.
AIBU to think I should be able to go on holiday and trust an airline to look after my case after spending thousands of pounds on the holiday.
As soon as I noticed it I reported it. I was given a piece of paper that basically says don’t bother claiming we have limited liability and claim off your own holiday insurance.
I’m so annoyed.
Airline - TUI
Airport - Manchester.

Not really surprised. Have you watched the baggage handlers chucking the bags on a plane?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 26/09/2018 22:56

Go to customer services before you leave the airport - they should replace it (did with ours).

IStandWithPosie · 26/09/2018 22:56

Was just about to ask if it was Manchester. There is a video.

endofthelinefinally · 26/09/2018 22:56

Contact your insurers and ask their advice.
I would think it would be the airport baggage handlers responsibility. Have you seen the heights suitcases are thrown from? I amazed any of them remain intact tbh.

ambostraw · 26/09/2018 22:57

It's not the airline it's the ground handling company.

QuestionableMouse · 26/09/2018 22:57

I knew it would be Manchester. Was anything damaged inside?

Tunaandbobby · 26/09/2018 22:58

I reported it at the desk before I left. As the case is 5 years old they won’t replace it even though I told them I have only actually used it three times.
My mums case was badly damaged too. Her case is 3 years old and they have made a report and told my mum they will replace her case.

Did you see the videos online during the week about the baggage handlers taking the bags off the plane.. one was in I think Tenerife but he was putting his hand into the bags taking things out of the cases and the other video can't remember where it was tho I think it might have been Manchester they were just fucking the bags off the belt and onto the trolley can... they were sliding off onto the ground.

Tunaandbobby · 26/09/2018 23:01

questionable luckily nothing damaged inside.
I know a case shouldn’t really hold sentimental value but it was part of a matching set that my grandma bought for us.
It’s obviously either been dropped from a great height or had something very heavy dropped on it.

Paleshelter · 26/09/2018 23:03

Yes definitely claim. There was a article online saying the chief executive of Manchester Airport is really cracking down on the baggage handlers who are employed by Swissport. Only thing is, could it have been caused by the baggage handlers at your holiday airport? I'm flying with TUI from Manchester soon! Good luck.

wowfudge · 26/09/2018 23:04

By the dirty marks on it I'd say it's been dropped from a height onto its end. Since when would they only replace a new case?

Paleshelter · 26/09/2018 23:05

Sorry just seen your update.

Peacockfeathers789 · 26/09/2018 23:07

That’s dreadful. These baggage handlers piss me off. Go and find another job rather than take out your workplace frustrations onto other people’s possessions. Fucking idiots

7salmonswimming · 26/09/2018 23:09

I was coming on to say that you can’t expect an airline or airport to tend to your suitcase beyond not breaking it. But they actually broke it Shock

If they’re replacing your mum’s case but not yours, that’ll be down to the terms and conditions of their own insurance. You should claim against yours, although not sure how much you would get for a 5+ year old case.

QOD · 26/09/2018 23:11

@lonelyatchristmas oh jeez! I’d rather have a cracked case than a fucked one
Imagine cleaning the ‘bird poo’ off not knowing it’s spunk !

Sorry. As you were

UrsulaPandress · 26/09/2018 23:12

That's dreadful.

But this is why I have never understood the fashion for 'hard shell' cases.

ambostraw · 26/09/2018 23:13

ursula

What? You don't understand what?

That people might be free to choose a suitcase without having to take into consideration that the baggage handlers might trash it.

The reasonable expectation of life for a good quality case, well looked after would be around 10 years. My samsonite is 8 years old, looks brand new and I use it around 6 times a year. A case as part of a set that is five years old but only used 3 times, has the value of a case of around a year or two old even though thpse cases may be used 4 or 5 times a year. You need to write them a letter before action pointing this out and and claiming 8 tenths or 80 percent of the cost of a commensurate case. See what happens.

Joe66 · 26/09/2018 23:20

My little samsonite is hand luggage only, and stuff doesn't fit in the case it doesn't go even on a 3 week holiday. There's a lot to be said for never checking in a case.

alphajuliet123 · 26/09/2018 23:25

Last month our old suitcase was damaged in transit, nowhere near as badly as yours. Spent 15-20 mins form-filling at the baggage reclaim desk and a brand new case was delivered 4 days later, way better than the ancient one we had. Jet2. Brilliant!

Tunaandbobby · 26/09/2018 23:26

I can’t remember the exact wording but the letter given to me at the airport basically says don’t bother claiming and to claim off my own insurance because they have limited liability.
I’m still going to get in touch with them though and tell them I think they need to either replace the case or pay something towards a new case. I know my grandma paid a lot for the cases. It definitely can’t be used again in this state and didn’t have any marks on it when I left it at the holiday airport.
I’m glad that In this instance the case is a hard shell case. I had a couple of bottles of perfume/aftershave, make up and a couple of ornaments we had bought on holiday in the case which would have probably broken in a softer case.

alphajuliet we went straight to the desk in the airport. They filled in the form for my mum. Even showed her a picture of what her replacement case would look like and told her she would have a choice of colours. As my case was older than my mums he wouldn’t fill in the claim form for me and gave me a print out letter telling me to claim off my own insurance.

10 years? Mine are 17 and 25 years old. And not hard shell.

One has a snapped zip pull.
