Did something spontaneous... now regret and feel stupid!

So I am a very sensible, professional, 39 year old mother. I’m not (totally) boring but I’ve never really done anything really spontaneous.

But at the weekend I decided to be spontaneous and get a TATTOO.... so I got a very small one on my lower back of a bluebird.

The picture I took in was a black line drawing, similar to that you would see in an old nature book. Kind of sketched but realistic.

Went to the best tattoo shop in town and checked out the artists work. All looked amazing with loads of nature pictures. On Facebook he had countless rave reviews and a few people a know who have tattoos confirmed his good rep. He appeared totally confident and I booked in to have it done the following day.

So in a go, and he does it. It’s very small (50p sized) and it hardly hurt at all.

He told me to keep it wrapped for 1 hour then uncovered or very loose clothing until fully healed. Wash/cream etc.

Firstly, I’m not that happy with it but it’s hard to know what it will look like when fully healed. The proportions of the bird look a bit off and very different to the picture I took in and the transfer he printed off. Also the skin behind the tattoo immediately become very red and sore and all the lines became really swollen so I couldn’t really tell what it really looked like even straight after.

Since then (4 days later) it has become even more red and swollen. It actually looks like it has been drawn by a child with black felt tip!

Looking at all his other tattoos the lines are so thin and precise! There’s a tiny spider (literally about the size of a 20p) and you can see the individual hairs!!

Anyway, have seen a practice nurse and a GP today who both confirmed it is definitely not infected or an allergic reaction, I just have delicate, pale skin which has effectively been injured by the tattoo.

However, I still totally regret having it done! I feel like MASSIVE wanker for thinking I’d be spontaneous, not doing any proper research etc, only for it turn out a bit shit.

The few people I have shown have said “oh that’s lovely” but I can tell they are just being nice bless em!

Anyhoo... my AIBU question is:

AIBU to go back and ask to have it corrected? Can it even be corrected? I have since learned of an amazing artist in a nearby shop who apparently can work magic so is it worth going somewhere else... ? The only problem is, I can see they are friends on Facebook....

The other thing is my tattoo artist posted pictures of all the other work he did that day but not mine!! He obviously wasn’t that proud of it! :(

I think it looks more friendly than the original!

19lottie82 · 26/09/2018 21:47

It will take about 2 weeks, possibly up to a month, to heal properly. Once it scans over and drops off it will be a lot sharper underneath, don’t worry!

cavycavy · 26/09/2018 21:47

I have been wondering if, mid tattoo, the artist was thinking “fuck me this woman has humongous feet” and it put him off...

I think it's lovely and the wings are beautifully done

HandlebarTash81 · 26/09/2018 21:48

See, I don’t even want a tattoo but I want a bee now!

TheDarkPassenger · 26/09/2018 21:48

Just seen your pic sorry! It looks fine to me tbh! It’s just healing :) remember someone has dragged a vibrating needle across your foot for 30 mins, your body is going to react to it! It will get better I promise

Allbarone · 26/09/2018 21:50

Just so you are prepared. It will go scabby and itchy and raised before it is healed. Prepare for it to look worse before it looks better. Don't pick the scabs!

I think it is cute btw.

itsallgravybaby · 26/09/2018 21:50

I think it's lovely OP!

Really cute! I've got similar skin to yours and all of mine looked like yours and felt like they were on fire. I also used bepanthen but a tiny thin layer just a couple of times a day and washed first with baby bath stuff. It settles down after about a week/week and a half.

Don't forget it's a "high traffic" area with socks and shoes so it might feel a bit more irritated!

GimmeBread · 26/09/2018 21:55

I really really like it! I'd add a wee flight path myself. This is what I'd like on the inside of my wrist. Maybe with a little flower, like he's going in for a drink.

ellendegeneres · 26/09/2018 21:57

I’d have to create a new username and use it purely for one post to show how awful mine is.
Butterflies... need I say more!? My moment of impulsivity saw me take a day off sick from a job I hated and in my mates place where her uncle did the tattoo.
It’s not terrible... but you get what you pay for. And I paid a tenner 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I want it neatened up, the lines more defined and I’ll like it more.

Meantime, I’m off to google bee tattoos, you’ve given me inspiration... and I truly do love yours, it’s sweet and I’ve not seen a bee tat before so it’s interesting and a lovely talking point

flapjackfairy · 26/09/2018 21:59

I agree it is lovely . And I don't even like tattoos !

TuMeke · 26/09/2018 21:59

I think it looks nice! It is a bit different to the picture, but that’s no bad thing - this one’s your bee. It will look different in a few weeks when it’s fully healed.
Another vote here for not using bepanthen - better to use a natural balm like pawpaw or similar. And I echo what PP have said: really good tattoo artists will be booked up weeks in advance. Next time you feel spontaneous, use that energy to make the appointment rather than get the actual tattoo there and then 😉

user1492970817 · 26/09/2018 22:01

I think it's a pretty good tattoo actually, will look better when it's healed.

Twinbhoys · 26/09/2018 22:02

OP please don't use bepanthen the ingredients have changed and any decent tattoo artist would not recommend using it

Elphame · 26/09/2018 22:02

It's really cute - it's not the picture you took in so I see why you are not 100% happy but I've seen some dreadful tattoos and this isn't one of them!

whiteroseredrose · 26/09/2018 22:03

Don't worry. With all the bee tattoos after the Manchester bombing nobody will bat an eyelid.

HeckyPeck · 26/09/2018 22:05

It’s lovely! 🐝

GreenMeerkat · 26/09/2018 22:06

@whiteroseredrose I was about to say, we aaaallll have bee tattoos in Manchester (not quite the same design though).

HappyBumbleBee · 26/09/2018 22:06

To be honest, I honestly think it looks great..... The only thing I would say and which could be not making it look quite right to you is it's little antennae which at the moment lol very low but in a few weeks you'll have much much better definition again!
I think you're probably more freaking out that you've done it than what it looks like because it really really does look great and he has got about of detail in there.
I'm holding out for a HappyBumbleBee once you're fully healed 😀 xx

Eppia · 26/09/2018 22:06

It’s lovely. Honestly, you can now stop worrying about it! While the photo bee is a little bit more elegant, I think yours looks sweeter and rounder, and for this reason, I actually prefer it (I adore bumble bees).

wowfudge · 26/09/2018 22:07

I don't like tattoos, but that's really cute and looks like it's healing okay.

HappyBumbleBee · 26/09/2018 22:08

And I officially hate spell checker!

LydiaLunch7 · 26/09/2018 22:08

It looks like a totally normal 3-day-old tattoo to me. Honestly I saw the latest replies before I saw the picture and thought everyone was just being nice to make you feel better, but your reaction is way over the top. I guess it's because getting a tattoo was so out of character and sudden, so now you're swinging back the other way in your mind, telling yourself it's horrendous.

I can't believe you went to the doctor about it, lol!

Not my style so I can't say I love it, but if I saw it on someone I wouldn't even blink. It looks entirely like a normal tattoo.

LydiaLunch7 · 26/09/2018 22:09

The quality is fine, the healing is fine, etc.

Loonoon · 26/09/2018 22:11

I’ve never had a tattoo but I had my eyebrows microbladed recently which is similar. After they were done they looked too dark, and very blurry. One month on and the healing process completed, they are much paler and you can see the incredibly detailed, fine, individual brow hairs. Hopefully your tattoo will also refine as your skin calms down.
