To think it's not possible to lose 10 stone at home with no help?

Is it?

OP posts:

Yes it's possible. I used to think it wasn't, that I was going to be big forever. I've got a few chronic illnesses and felt I'd never be healthy. But, I joined the 100lbs thread, and so far I've lost 73lbs. I've just lowered my target weight so now aiming to lose 8 stone (112lbs). I have no doubt that I will do it, but I also have no doubt it might take a while. I didn't get to 19st overnight, and I'm not going to lose it overnight either. Keep on keeping on.

I'm now off to go buggy running (ok, slow jogging) with a friend. A few months ago I'd have died laughing at the very idea.

You can do it OP.

catmumof1 · 25/09/2018 11:15

I lost 6 stone by myself in just under a year and have kept it off without much effort since Easter (damn chocolate).
I used VLCD/Exante and my fitness pal to keep track of extra snacks and meals outside of the replacements. Had a lot of negativity from people (mostly SW and WW members) for keeping my target on MFP to 1000 cals but I don't count fruit or veg or drinks or sauces and don't bother weighing or measuring anything (life is too short) so I probably ended up eating 1200-1500 a day. Also I didn't 'diet' at weekends, I just cut down to 2 meals so a nice brunch and dinner.
Favorite diet dinner was a Chinese fake-away: egg fried (1 cal spray) cauliflower rice with whatever veg I had lying around and 2 eggs per tub of cauliflower rice, baked salmon, kale seaweed (best thing to come out of SW), mini spring rolls and some sweet chilli or hoi sin sauce. Not counting cals for veg and sauces its only the salmon and egg and spring rolls if you have them at all, DP insisted on some carbs.
I'm a volume eater and a big snacker with a sweet tooth so I like to have lots of mini and low calories snacks available like fruit and the mini bags of haribo and I've stopped buying big packets of crisps and chocolates. With individual servings and funsize I can have one of each in an evening and not blow my calorie intake with a family size bag of M&Ms!
And don't forget to drink lots of water, sugar free high-juice squash is your friend! I also cut out week-night wine, no hacks there sadly.

catmumof1 · 25/09/2018 11:17

And I did no real exercise other than running errands on weekends and racking up 10k+ steps according to my iPhone.

MrsCar · 25/09/2018 11:26

I should probably start another thread for this point, but it's just something I've noticed here.

I lost 4 stone myself in less than a year, (4 years ago and have maintained) in fact the first 3 stone came off in 3 months and I lost the next stone very slowly.

What I found difficult to deal with was other people's reactions; telling me I'd lost too much (I hadn't, I got down to bmi of 22), that I was losing it too quickly... people were generally suspicious and not very supportive. I think people have some sort of block about weightloss and how 'easy' or fast it can be when you really, really work at it.

I lost mine through myfitnesspal to begin with, and ever since I've stuck to a smaller dinner portion/banned going for seconds, and I just allow myself one biscuit with my tea or coffee... I used to eat up to 8.
We stopped getting takeaways every weekend too, but do still get them maybe once every 3 weeks, and when we do, I have to compensate by exercising and eating less the next day.
Now that I've written that down, I can see that yes, it is 'hard' - it takes discipline and determination, and I know that if I take my eye of it for even more than a week, I'm up 5, 6, or 7 pounds. I weigh myself once a week or every second week.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 25/09/2018 11:43

It is possible. I lost 5st 7lbs back in 2002 in around nine or ten months. I was very determined though.
I filled up on vegetables, swapped packets of crisps for a couple of crackers with low fat cheese spread and swapped chocolate for yoghurt when I wanted something sweet.
I walked and walked and bought a mini trampoline which I’d use while watching tv.

I think the reason diets had failed before for me is because I wanted a quick fix but also didn’t really want to change the foods and lifestyle that had got me to such a size.

You need a goal. So, for example, you could say that by next Summer you want to be a size 14 (That was my goal but actually I got down to a size 10 as I was happy on my weight loss plan and genuinely started to enjoy the walking). Then think about all the benefits of being that new size. You’d be healthier, your choice of clothes would be greater, perhaps there are things your weight stops you from doing? I hadn’t been swimming for years as I didn’t want to be seen in a swimsuit. Think about the benefits and really try to visualise yourself at the smaller size wearing what you’d like to wear and doing something or going somewhere that you’d like go.
When you don’t feel like going for those walks around the block or you’re thinking about high calorie foods or over eating think about those goals. What do you want more? That used to help me put the crisps back in the cupboard.

You can do it but you’ll have to make changes and know that there’s no quick fix. You need to find foods and a form of exercise you enjoy or you’ll give up. That’s why walking is so good - You don’t need any special equipment other than suitable clothes for the weather that day. Just start off doing a bit more walking every day than you might normally do. See if a friend wants to go with you (Friends with dogs are good people to ask). You’ll find you’ll go further and a little faster each day.

Very best of luck!

Gilead · 25/09/2018 11:45

I lost 5stone on my own a couple of years ago. Healthy eating, less sugar more exercise.

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2018 12:01

Hey op, are you coming back? Are you ok?

HelenaDove · 25/09/2018 14:26

Its hard but possible I did it with Slimming World Id better not say any more. One thing i have NEVER said on here OR elsewhere is that "if i can do it anyone can" because i think its a bit patronizing and simplistic to say that as well as cocky

So i dont know where the fuck this Reddit user got this from....,

"I think she does some great work advising others about social housing issues etc. Where she loses credibility is the me-railing, the thinking it's helpful to someone who needs to lose weight to tell them (every other sentence) that SHE has lost 49 stone so anyone can (like Xenia with her "of course you can earn 20 grand a week, I do!) and believing that she is the only one on MN qualified enough to advise on her issues. You do find that over there, a thread is trundling along quite happily, lots of advice from ordinary Mumsnetters, then, if it's a SH thread, or a diet thread, up pops HD and discussion is stifled because the guru has arrived"

Notice she hasnt put any link up She cant because there isnt one!

raisedbyguineapigs · 25/09/2018 14:34

How rude helenafwiw I've always found your posts on your weightless helpful and not boastful in the slightest.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2018 14:35

In fact there a plenty of posts on here of me objecting to Lisa Riley coming out with the "if i can do it anyone can" thing.

What dentydown says is great advice Cutting out sugar always makes me feel better and her other advice is good too Try not to think about the weight too much It should come off as a side effect of eating healthily.

Its a good idea to get omega 3 into your diet especially if you are older. If you dont like oily fish try putting flaxseeds on your cereal (porridge or Weetabix or Shredded Wheat) those plain cereals are the only ones i eat.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2018 14:38

Ta guinea i was EH????????? when i read it Worra Liberty will PMSL when she sees it.

HairyLegs11 · 25/09/2018 14:40

Very possible IF you have the willpower. Portion sizes / adequate exercise/no evening or late night snacking.

raisedbyguineapigs · 25/09/2018 14:42

That's OK. You've also reminded me to get some Omega 3 while I'm out Grin

Ohluckyme · 25/09/2018 14:50

It’s perfectly possible. It will take effort and you might be hungry but hunger is a normal feeling once you get used to it. Download my fitness pal. It’s free and straightforward. Patience, perseverance and determination is needed!

Libertarian · 25/09/2018 15:05

Slimming world is a load of bollocks. It encourages people to eat plate loads of "Syn free" food, which doesn't address what causes obesity in the first place - over eating. The meetings are tedious, full of people swearing blind they don't know why they've gained that week (are you sure the three bottles of prosecco and extra large kebab you swallowed down on Friday had nothing to do with it Karen?). Calorie counting to ensure you're eating a deficit is the way forward. Three months of that and I'm almost halfway to my target (I want to lose 6 and a half stone in total, I was 3 stone 2lbs down last time I weighed myself).

MrsCar · 25/09/2018 15:31

I've never done SW, but it's definitely not bollocks. I follow people on Instagram who have lost up to 15 stone on it. It obviously works for a lot of people.

ProfessorMoody · 25/09/2018 16:16

Slimming World does work, but it is still bollocks.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/09/2018 16:24

Slimming World works for SOME people. But for a lot of people it’s like joining a very expensive cult.

Sparklyfee · 25/09/2018 16:27

Slimming world at home worked for me. I went to one group to get the books etc but didn't stick around for the chat. Never returned.

Followed two chubby cubs and pinch of nom blogs and was strict and followed the plan. Good luck

AdventuringThroughLife · 25/09/2018 16:44

I though the statistics were something like 5% success. Not that great and most end up heavier.

raisedbyguineapigs · 25/09/2018 17:41

The success rates of all programmes is about 5% because people don't stick to it long term and go back to eating what they did in the first place. If you follow it properly, basically you are eating 1/3 veg with every meal and 2/3 of a plate of carb and protein, 200 calories of milk or cheese, 200 calories of bread or cereal and 200 calories of high calorie density stuff. Its basically an easy way to follow a calorie controlled diet without weighing and measuring every single thing. If you lose weight and then go back to your old eating habits, of course you will put the weight on again, just like you will for every single other eating change, including calorie counting and low carb and whatever the MN approved WOE is today. There is a lot wrong with SW, mainly their poor terminology but they cant stop people ignoring all the official literature and taking from it what they want if they don't want to eat sensibly or healthily.

MortyVicar · 25/09/2018 18:30

Hey op, are you coming back? Are you ok?

I may be being unfair to the OP and if I am I apologise. But I very much fear that what she wanted to hear was that no, it absolutely isn't possible to do it without support so she might as well carry on eating the way she is and not bother trying.

OP if I AM wrong and you're still around - yes it's possible. But it's hard work, takes self discipline, and if you expect that dieting will make the weight all fall off in a month you will be very disappointed and give up. And probably eat even more in your disappointment. But if you really want to do it, you can and you will.

irehs · 25/09/2018 19:31

Check out James Smith Acadamy. He does loads of free content to look at. Breaks it down very simply #CFD. If you don't like swearing or are easily offended it won't be for you

dontfluffthefluffer · 25/09/2018 19:52

Definitely doable. I did (just shy of that at 8.5/9ish Stone) no slimming clubs as I really dislike them.

Hard work and remember that some days are good and some bad.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2018 20:51

" full of people swearing blind they don't know why they've gained that week (are you sure the three bottles of prosecco and extra large kebab you swallowed down on Friday"

The second time i lost weight it came off really really slowly. This attitude would not have helped me. ( I lost 10 stone the first time and 4 the second )

And it certainly wouldnt have helped a fellow SW member who turned out to have a tumour on her ovary.
