Is it?

The trouble with groups is they give you really warped ideas about food. I saw a post this week about making slimming world doughnuts, it's a bread roll filled with jam, rolled in sweetener and baked. The poster was talking about it being only 2 syns. It would have about 200 calories and a jam doughnut is 220 calories. Syns are meaningless things that make you categorise food as good or bad, rather than just fuel. It's not a healthy mindset and leads to a lot of guilt and emotion around eating. Simply counting calories is best.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/09/2018 04:41

Of course it is. Stop lying to yourself about what you're eating and stop eating enough for 3 people every day.

Sallystyle · 25/09/2018 06:46

I lost 5 stone by doing a mixture of WW and calorie counting. I think a stone went on WW and the rest by doing CC. I see no reason why someone can't lose 10 stone. Of course it is bloody hard, but it is doable.

TidyDancer · 25/09/2018 07:07

I don't know about the rates of success regarding losing big amounts of weight at home but I have lost a lot without a slimming club and I think it's a more sustainable way of doing it. Of course this is just my opinion, but I feel that I educated myself along the way because I used MFP and I figured out exactly what I was eating and the value of it. I didn't have any bullshit like syns or free foods etc, I learned how to make good choices for me.

That said, I have a colleague and a friend who have both had great success with slimming world so it clearly is another way to go. Colleague wouldn't have the first clue about nutrition however, and I do think that knowledge is key to long term sustained weightloss. Friend had now retrained herself using MFP as well and sees slimming world as a handy tool that got her to where she is but not a long term plan.

The thing that’s working for me at the moment (I started off with about 3 stone to lose and have done about half that in three months) was first calorie counting using MyFitnessPal (its free!) and then going on the OurPath programme, which cost me something like £60 total for 12 weeks and which teaches you healthy eating and exercise habits and gives you a mentor and an online group for support. (You can pay more than that if you want them to send you fancy scales and activity tracker, but I already had scales and a Fitbit).

Potplant2 · 25/09/2018 07:22

I’d also say that if you are thinking of losing that much weight a chat with your GP would be helpful. They might give you advice you hadn’t thought of and might be able to refer you for other types of support.

sportsdirectmug · 25/09/2018 07:24

My dB lost 13 stone in 22 months.

serbska · 25/09/2018 07:24

Possible, but obviously it’s not going to be fun or easy. Humans like eating. Our brains light up when we eat delicious delicious cheese.

QueenOfMyWorld · 25/09/2018 07:34

Myfitnesspal is brilliant it worked for me

AskMeHow · 25/09/2018 07:42

My husband has done it. But he was having some pretty serious issues if he didn't. That kind of thing tends to provide all the motivation you need to keep going with the salad with every meal and one helping at dinner. It is difficult otherwise.

AgentJohnson · 25/09/2018 07:45

Some people can and some people can’t, if you were really trying to lose five but gained five instead, then maybe you aren’t one of those people who can. There’s no shame in being one of those people who can’t but If losing weight without support isn’t working for you, then it’s time try something different.

Grimbles · 25/09/2018 07:50

I've lost the best part of 4 stone and my husband has lost over 5 stone this last year doing it on our own. Once you find a way of eating that suits then it's pretty easy to do. For us it was low carb, might be something different for you.

Mummaluelae · 25/09/2018 07:50

YouTube vids, apps, any little exercise should help with balanced diet. Maybe invest in a Nintendo Wii with balance board. They're relatively cheap now as they're so old

WorriesGalore · 25/09/2018 07:52

I lost 5 stone in 8 months. On my way to lose 3 more. Entirely doable. No Slimmingworld, WW or any other plans. Just the Blood Sugar Diet.

MagicKeysToAsda · 25/09/2018 08:14

I guess the question here is: what prevents you from being able to do it, day in day out? There is evidently a solid reason, otherwise your efforts over the last year would have worked, instead of taking you in the wrong direction. Maybe see if you can be referred to a counsellor specialising in this, to work through the psychological issues related to food? I believe in many areas, if your GP refers you to the bariatric surgery route, you can access group support and therapy that way (even if you decide surgery is not the way for you).

In any case, definitely worth a chat with a sympathetic GP. I did, and then the practice nurse specialising in weight loss kept in touch with me regularly to keep me on track. I've lost 5 stone at home, aiming for another 1.5 as an initial target and to then see how my health is. I put motivating messages up for myself (related to needing to live a long life for my kids mainly) inside my cupboards. I joined the 100lbs weight loss thread someone linked to earlier, and that's been fantastic for support.

MrsCar · 25/09/2018 08:18

My sister lost 7 stone in less than a year, without any group etc. she did go to a personal trainer for the first month, just because she didn't know what to do or how to use anything in the gym.

Aprilsinparis · 25/09/2018 08:24

I have lost 2stone 6lb since beginning of July. I have had no help. I just got sick to death of looking the way I did, and I was desperate to wear all the lovely clothes, hanging in my wardrobe, I wasn't able to wear. I have another 2stone to lose. I have set myself a target to the end of November to lose the rest. All I've done is cut out all the crap I thought I needed to enjoy life. It hasn't been easy, far from it, but I really need to feel good about myself again. You can do it by yourself, but it takes a lot of willpower and determination. Good luck, you CAN do it.

MrsFrankDrebin · 25/09/2018 08:27

Another vote here for myfitnesspal. I lost 4 stone by myself while still cooking for the family (which was always the problem - no time to start cooking fancy menus for myself and 'normal' food for them - I started from the premise that we all basically needed to be eating the same, just different amounts!). So I found loads of lower calorie main meals which I religiously stuck to for me with regard to amounts of carbs (weighed everything!) but others could have bigger helpings if they wanted/needed for their needs. I was also really strict about no take-aways for the first 6 months, but now we might have one every 6 weeks or so - there's no need to be completely deprived of treats, just to be more careful where and how you include them.

Just over 2 years on from when I started, I'm still at my 67kg goal weight (which is fine for my 5'9" height) and I know that partly what's helping me maintain that is because mfp has become a regular part of my day. It really helps to keep track every day to keep bad habits at bay, and to stop complacency getting the better of me.

Add in some exercise you can manage/enjoy to help get it all going in that way too, and you can do it. It won't be fast, it won't be a quick fix. (They really don't exist without artificially aids like surgery or very low cal diets.) But you can do it. As someone else said, split up your goals into smaller ones - lose a stone first, then reassess everything on mfp and start on the next stone. Just keep thinking that this is your new way of life. You don't have to 'deprive' yourself, but you do need to take a long, hard look at how much your body really needs, rather than the habits you've fallen into have fooled you into thinking it does!

Good luck!

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2018 08:28

I think this depends on the individual. For some yes who it's wholly possible, for others it is not. If it is not possibly for you op, then is there something stopping you seeking external help?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 25/09/2018 08:35

Of course it is. It required discipline though which most people don't have. Why have you tried? I would suggest my fitness pal like others have.

Sarahlou63 · 25/09/2018 08:40

If you can put it on, you can take it off.

ProfessorMoody · 25/09/2018 09:12

It depends on the person. For me, no it isn't possible. I can't do it even with the help of slimming clubs, so definitely not on my own. I can't stick to diets, I have terrible food issues and I can't exercise as I'm in a wheelchair, so there's not much hope without professional help that I can't afford as nothing is available on the NHS.

ferrier · 25/09/2018 09:38

I don't think it really matters how much or how little you have to lose, you have to find a way that works for you.
For me, slimming clubs, Mfp are too 'nitpicky'. Too many rules etc. I just stuck to the basics, eliminate snacking (initially replaced unhealthy snacks with fruit and then eliminated fruit, stick to 2 or 3 decent meals a day (2 was good for me, lunch and evening meal) and double the amount of exercise. I lost 2.5 stone in 6 months with no 'help'.

ferrier · 25/09/2018 09:39

Oh yes ... and portion control. Putting less on my plate, especially less carbs but not less fat.

dentydown · 25/09/2018 09:47

I bought a second hand Fitbit from eBay. It helps to get me to walk 10,000 steps a day. I also switched from instant to real coffee, no sugar in it, no biscuits ( was eating 10 hobnobs a day).
Everything I make for me I do from scratch, using veg. I’ve lost 2.5 stone so far and I have about 2 more to go.
I los weight in 7 pound increments. If I were to look at it as 4 stone I would of thought bugger that and go back to the biscuits! Now there’s less sugar in my diet I feel better!
