...and if this rolls out to where I live I will personally go and dump all my child's nappies outside the local council offices!

I'm all for recycling but considering everything I buy, the majority of the packaging says "non-recyclable" ...what the hell are people supposed to do? I also live in a London borough that, due to fortnightly collections, dont provide homes with a wheelie bin- so I had to buy one unless I wanted black bin bags to stink out my home for a fortnight.

I don’t know. We have weekly recycling and fortnightly rubbish collections. The roads stink on rubbish day. People don’t rinse their recycling, wheely bins are over flowing. Then the rubbish men end up chucking it all over he road....
I don’t see what’s so wrong with weekly collections. I don’t go wild and chuck out all the food in the house because my bins not full and it’s due to be emptied.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 24/09/2018 14:13

Tbh it just encourages people to resort to fly-tipping.

teaandtoast · 24/09/2018 14:17

We seem to be going backwards in terms of the public good. I think we should have weekly bin collections.
In my area, streetlights are switched off after midnight. Quelke surprise, burglaries and muggings have increased.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/09/2018 14:18

Bins here are collected every 3 weeks, it is a royal pain in the arse. All we seem to do is sort the recycling which goes out weekly, if you miss the bins it is a 6 week wait , we did this once and it was minging by the 5th week. Cant take bins to our local tip either. Angry

Stressedout10 · 24/09/2018 14:36

Ha I live in Fife 1/2 size general waste bin (3 full size recycling)and 4 weekly bin collection😣
Add to this if the lid won't close they won't empty it unless you pay £25 bulky uplift fee 😠
Electronics can only be expected at the dump itself or with a bulky uplift again
Don't even know where all these so called savings go just makes my blood boil.
Oh and flytipping is riff

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/09/2018 14:40

HowlsMovingBungalow do you not have a local tip?
I had one party and the delay of the fortnight resulted in maggots....eugh

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/09/2018 14:48

Yes we have a local tip but they won't take household rubbish?! Week 5 DP opened the wheelie bin to a be hit in the face with a swarm of blue bottles. Fecking vile! It was a health hazard during the heat wave this year.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/09/2018 15:19

and if this rolls out to where I live I will personally go and dump all my child's nappies outside the local council offices! That's a bit of an off-target protest bearing in mind the scheme includes weekly collections for nappies and incontinence products - a more frequent service than most of the country is getting at the moment.

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/09/2018 15:22

We’re 3 weekly although thankfully now don’t have any wee ones in nappies! Summer with 2 in nappies was fucking grim! We used to put them all in a black bag and take them to the tip, I couldn’t face letting the neighbours be stunk out of their gardens!

Bombardier25966 · 24/09/2018 15:25

I don't agree with it, but councils have to make these cuts because of the cuts in funds from central government. If you disagree with the cuts then campaign for an end to austerity, and remember things like this when you next vote.

They're collecting food waste and nappies weekly apparently. Did nobody else read past the first paragraph?

Troels · 24/09/2018 15:30

We have 4 weekly collection now. Nappies have their own bin, looks like a very large foood bin, and is collected weekly.I wonder about those who don't have the space to store all these bins. We now have three stacking box bins for recylables, one large balck rubbish bin, one green bag for garden waste, one large food waste bin. If we still had babies there'd be a nappies bin too. Luckily we have a large gaden with room to store it all.

serbska · 24/09/2018 15:40

once every 4 weeks is WAY too infrequent

SlothMama · 24/09/2018 15:40

I've moved from one council that collects waste fortnightly and has a separate food bin which is great as it stops the bin smelling! My new house has collections every 3 weeks, the recycling gets very full quickly as does the waste bin and it smells as there's no separate food bin. So 4 weeks would be awful imo

musmusculus · 24/09/2018 15:43

Did you even read the article before you posted?

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 24/09/2018 15:43
  1. It says there's a weekly collection for nappies and for food waste, so there should be nothing smelly in your bin.
  2. Vote this bloody government out - all the cuts being made by local councils are down to lack of funding for local services.
BillywigSting · 24/09/2018 15:44

We have fortnightly rubbish collection, with garden and recycling once a month. We just got a second wheelie bin. It is quite grim, especially in summer, the smell is awful

SinkGirl · 24/09/2018 15:46

You can’t leave food waste in a bin for a month. It’s a health hazard. Would appreciate weekly nappy collections though - with twins they make up the bulk of our rubbish.

SinkGirl · 24/09/2018 15:47

Oh I missed that food waste was also a weekly collection - in that case I’d be okay with it.

We have 3 weekly collections here in Fife with 4 different bins. It's not really a problem unless you miss out a week. Blue and Brown bin one week (landfill and green waste), green (plastic and metal) the next and black (paper) on the last week.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/09/2018 15:52

We have an eldery indoor cat who uses a litter tray and an equally elderly dog who needs a pad down at night. All waste thats flushable goes down the loo but the rest has to go in the bin, it isn't pleasant week 3,4,5.

GaryWilmotsTeeth · 24/09/2018 15:57

I live in Conwy county, where the article is about. It's going to be total pain in the arse, but manageable. Just. We are currently on 3 weekly collections which is fine, but my bin is pretty much full after 3 weeks so its going to be a real struggle to fit another week's rubbish in too. The council take food and nappies every week, which actually works very well, as does the recycling. The bin doesn't smell too bad as a result. 4 weekly collections feels like a step too far. I'm going to have to crush as much general waste as I can to fit it in the bin. And I'm lucky that I have space to keep my bins away from the house, in my old flat, I had to keep all my bins in the downstairs hallway. If I had a larger family, it would be much harder.

Maursh · 24/09/2018 16:06

I don't agree with it, but councils have to make these cuts because of the cuts in funds from central government. If you disagree with the cuts then campaign for an end to austerity, and remember things like this when you next vote. Look up what your council spends on what and their sources of income before you rush to judgements like this one. The majority of funding comes from council tax - not central government, what a convenient scape goat austerity is for poor management! 30% of council expenditure goes on "care for the elderly" How many of them could afford to pay for their own care if their 4-bed detached homes weren't ring-fenced. A further 15% on vulnerable children (twice as much as on schools!).
