To ask for your help after hairdresser made my hair tangerine?

Had a dreadful experience at the hairdresser last week and my hair has gone patchy ginger tangerine with streaks of hot pink.

A manager of the original hairdresser has offered to fix it free of charge, but I feel bad that she will be out of pocket for her colleague's mistake.

Would you give a tip in this instance, and if so, how much? It may be a case of just returning my hair to how it was when I walked in, and will have wasted two of my days off. Original fee would have been circa £150, and after an unlucky spell with money, could do with holding onto it, but want to be fair.

So if I leave without giving them a penny for any of it (fee or tip), even if they give me what I wanted originally, that's reasonable, given what they've put me through?

They have offered this.

It's not balayage for a start because there's no graduation and it starts too close to the roots. It's just blocky.
I think this picture is a great example of how it should be. They've messed up, they need to fix it. No tips!

They should take 100% responsibility- I certainly wouldn’t tip at all!

It’s not balayage, however having said that I think your hair looks pretty cool regardless, the 90s home bleach and color (salon version!) look is in right now where I live! You can definitely pull it off if it doesn’t get 100% fixed! Could never say that about my thin mousy look!

I'm not a hairdresser although I've used a lot of (pro) dyes and changed my colour more times than I can count so I have a decent understanding of how hair behaves. My gut feel is that you shouldn't pay regardless because I think that even if they manage to get this looking good it could end up being quite high maintenance for a while. Generally hair which has been bleached doesn't hold dye the same way as unbleached hair - so even if they manage to get it looking like the picture morningseleven has posted then what could well end up happening is that the fading on the dark part will end up patchy - the unbleached bit right at the top will behave differently to the bleached then darkened section. (I'm assuming you're naturally dark)

To me, part of the attraction of these kind of balayagey looks, or having shadow roots or similar is that they're a bit lower maintenance than traditional to the root highlights. With a rose gold you were always going to have to apply a toner to keep the pinky shade looking fresh, but if it was done like morningseleven has shown it shouldn't need fully redone too often as regrowth shouldn't be an issue. But the dark dye that they're going to have to use to sort the odd roods out might not hold well.

Because they've over bleached it I think this could end up costing you more in the long run. So nope, wouldn't be tipping.

Thanks Statistically, that's really helpful. I had bleach in my hair from a previous colour already, but they were aware of this when they did it. I had a colour consultation and she assured me it was achievable. I'm not sure what went wrong here, as we'd agreed she would add lower strips of my natural colour so that it looked like what baylage is supposed to. She didn't seem to be very well within herself, so I feel a bit sorry for her, but my hair looks horrid.

This is what I went in with. I trusted her assurance that what I wanted was possible.

Your before picture was not a million miles off my hair - I'm a bit more coppery and don't currently have dark roots but your root colour looks a little lighter but similar to mine. I've been many similar shades Grin

It does look like she's bleached up in to your roots - she seems to have started the balayage awfully high up.

I didn't mind what I had before, it's such a shame.

Never mind, have to laugh really. Just wanted to check I was being fair, but I hadn't thought about the added maintanance aspect. Makes me feel a bit better about it bring free. Thanks again.

I like your hair. Was expecting orange bit not at all. It's a nice pinky colour. I think it's fashionable and not a disater at all!

TuMeke · 24/09/2018 03:22

Not just the added maintenance, OP, but the added damage your hair has suffered: you’ve had more of your hair bleached out than you should have, and it will take much longer to grow out the bleached bits as they start practically at the roots rather than halfway down the lengths, IYSWIM. That’s another reason you shouldn’t be paying a penny for them correcting your hair.

Glad they have agreed to sort it for you. No tip though!
