This is my first post but have been lurking for a while.

My DP and I own a flat which is a first floor maisonette in London. We have been talking about getting a puppy for a while but haven’t yet taken the plunge. We are currently looking after a friend’s dog while she is on holiday and thought we would treat it as a bit of a trial run (although we know a puppy would be much more work). So far it has gone really well.

So downstairs have moved in fairly recently and are renting. I bumped into the guy as I was returning from a walk with friend’s ddog. He told me that he girlfriend was allergic and didn’t know we had a dog when they moved in. I said we were only looking after him for 2 weeks but we’re thinking of getting a puppy in the near future. He told me I couldn’t and he would sue me if I did. I was very taken aback and basically said nothing and went into my flat.

AIBU in thinking that we can get a dog if we want? There is a small communal corridor then our flats and gardens are obviously complete separate. I’m the only one who cleans the communal corridor anyway and I don’t mind doing this even daily if that helps. I don’t want to make anyone ill but we’ve had the dog here for over a week and she’s been fine. Just don’t know what to do as I really want a dog

get a dog.

Im quite seriously allergic to cats and live in a row of terraces where literally every other homeowner owns at least one cat.
I very rarely have any trouble.... the only time it was bad was once when one came in my garden and rubbed itself on my face (I was asleep in a deck chair) Then I was really ill and had a rash on my face for ages. Wasnt my neighbours fault though.....
and dogs dont even roam in and out of other peoples property anyway!

id certainly never tell my neighbours what pets they could have!

I have a pug who's bark could cut through glass. Shall I pop her round?

Get a dog and tell him that it's a cat, then look bewildered when he disputes this.

Check for covenants on the freehold they are quite common - ours states a maximum of two dogs and no commercial businesses plus front lawn to be maintained weekly - actually the covenants cannot be enforced because the land seller is long dead but it is worth you checking, your solicitor should have highlighted them at time of purchase.

@pippop1317 Classic springer sprawl! 3 springers on this thread, how lovely.

I’m near London, OP, wanna borrow mine? There are drifts of fur on the kitchen floor currently. Must drag the hoover round tomorrow.

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/09/2018 23:58

Pip pop it looks like an extra dog head popping out of your v shaped pillow .

nononsene · 23/09/2018 00:04

I’m not a dog fan but if my neighbour had said that to me I would have gone straight out and bought two dogs.

TownHall · 23/09/2018 00:07

I think you can get one if you want but I'd be gutted if I were the neighbour too especially as you have laminate flooring in places.

Belina · 23/09/2018 00:10

Sue you for what lol hes deluded get a puppy if you want

Doubletrouble99 · 23/09/2018 00:34

I agree with everyone that he hasn't a leg to stand on and that you should just get one and not tell him. However with the attitude he has I'm pretty sure he won't just leave it at that when he finds out. He is bound to complain about every little thing about your dog, so think carefully. I know it's tempting to go f--k you but I feel you are looking at a 'neighbour from hell situation' so I would give him absolutely nothing to complain about.

I don't know if both you and your partner both work but if you do getting a puppy and leaving it for any length of time is a no no. So I would get a fairly placid rescue dog. One you know doesn't bark, or barks very little and is house trained. I would look at only leaving it in the rooms with carpet so it doesn't make a noise on the floor walking around too.

Elephant14
Noise.
Puppies tend to run around and play, it’s noisier on laminate than carpet.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 23/09/2018 21:06

I wouldn't bother spending anymore time thinking about that wanker tbh. I'd also get two.

I've got a dog that self identifies as a cat Wink
