NDN said I can’t get a dog

This is my first post but have been lurking for a while.

My DP and I own a flat which is a first floor maisonette in London. We have been talking about getting a puppy for a while but haven’t yet taken the plunge. We are currently looking after a friend’s dog while she is on holiday and thought we would treat it as a bit of a trial run (although we know a puppy would be much more work). So far it has gone really well.

So downstairs have moved in fairly recently and are renting. I bumped into the guy as I was returning from a walk with friend’s ddog. He told me that he girlfriend was allergic and didn’t know we had a dog when they moved in. I said we were only looking after him for 2 weeks but we’re thinking of getting a puppy in the near future. He told me I couldn’t and he would sue me if I did. I was very taken aback and basically said nothing and went into my flat.

AIBU in thinking that we can get a dog if we want? There is a small communal corridor then our flats and gardens are obviously complete separate. I’m the only one who cleans the communal corridor anyway and I don’t mind doing this even daily if that helps. I don’t want to make anyone ill but we’ve had the dog here for over a week and she’s been fine. Just don’t know what to do as I really want a dog

Get a chihuahua or 3

whereiscaroline · 22/09/2018 21:30

It never fails to amaze me how MENTAL some people are! Please start a dog boarding business OP. Grin

AHoleInTheWorld · 22/09/2018 21:34

Surely she comes into indirect contact with dogs, their owners, and areas they've frequented recently and she's still okay...

Your neighbour is being VVU.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 22/09/2018 21:39

My NDN and I share a garden (victorian terrace, tiny garden, it's shared)and she spoke to be about getting a dog before she got one. I am highly allergic to dogs, which I told her, but ultimately it was her choice to get one and there's nothing I could do. She got one, and whenever it's in the shared garden (often) I can't use it. However, thems the breaks.

Or it could be a stealth land grab.

Menolly · 22/09/2018 21:39

I'd borrow as many friends dogs as you can, preferably big fluffy smelly dogs, if you have any friends with elderly dogs with deadly farts even better, so he sees you walking a different dog each time and thinks you have loads. Then get a cute little puppy, he'll be so relieved all the big smelly dogs have gone that he might even decide he likes your puppy.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/09/2018 21:40

Sue you for what though? What a strange thing to say.

Get a dog when the time is right and don't give him a second throught.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/09/2018 21:40

Thought fgs!

pippop1317 · 22/09/2018 21:44

I can send this one round. She might not be much help telling neighbour to fuck off. But she loves a belly rub!

Tell him you're allergic to dickheads and if he doesn't fuck off you'll sue him. Dimwit.

Atlantea · 22/09/2018 21:50

oh please start a doggie day care?

Elephant14 · 22/09/2018 22:04

He's a doctor? God help us all. Anyway, ignoring the crazy for now, how do you access your garden OP? Can you use it for the puppy, do they have a separate garden?

Bluelily87 · 22/09/2018 22:10

Elephant14 we have separate gardens. We have stairs that go down to it. There’s been no problem with temporary dog and garden plus with live right next to a park. Obviously if we do get a puppy and not an older dog we will have to carry up and down stairs to start with

Aprilshowersnotastorm: will you bring that gorgeous dog to me please?

PositivelyPERF · 22/09/2018 22:19

Which one do you want, OP? 😁

All these dogs are lovely. Definitely think they should all come to the pooch party!

Viviennemary · 22/09/2018 22:25

I'd rather not live next door to a dog tbh. But as long as there is nothing in their tenancy agreement that they are not allowed pets there isn't a lot you can do about it.

Rebecca36 · 22/09/2018 22:31

Lots of people are allergic to cats and dogs 'dander' and probably that of other animals. What they do is keep away from the animals and if they cannot completely avoid, take antihistamines. Simples.

Your dog won't be living with your neighbours or going in their garden so not a problem.

Elephant14 · 22/09/2018 22:35

Sounds ideal to me then, and yes you are right you need to carry puppies up and down stairs initially to protect their joints, but (a) this won't be near your neighbour and (b) he is a fuckwit.

crosstalk · 22/09/2018 22:38

I'd be more concerned about the puppy, OP - do you and your DP both work?

madvixen · 22/09/2018 22:43

Your neighbour sounds like a prize idiot. These two will be with you first thing Monday morning 😂

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2018 22:49

My last ndn told me I couldn’t have a cat and I told her she couldn’t have a dog. We stuck to the arrangement and lived in harmony for ten years.

But, she is my cousin and growing up I hated the constant barking from her dog when I visited. She thought my cat was the devil!

However, I think these are the only circumstance under which you can make weird demands.

You should threaten to sue him for being a weird idiot. It has the same probability of success as his law suit.

Bluelily87 · 22/09/2018 22:49

crosstalk we do but we both work from home regularly (2-3 times a week each) and I am very fortunate that I can take a dog into work with me. Obviously we will have a full talk regarding logistics of it all before we commit.

madvixen yes please! They remind me of my first dog as a kid!

Bluelily87. They're utterly bonkers! I love that you could take a pup into work with you. These two used to go into work with hubby but then one of them wee'd on some evidence and that was the end of that 😂.
