To think Tesco make it up as they go along

Son just popped out to buy some AA batteries from the Tesco down the road.

They refused to serve him saying they’re ‘not allowed to sell batteries to children’. Eh? Since when?

Ds3 is nearly 14 and has bought AA batteries from there (unaccompanied) before.

A lady was in the queue in front of me yesterday buying a bottle of wine and was asked for ID. She proceeded to have a very large row with the check out girl and manager as she was 45 years old! She stormed off in the end as they refused to budge.

LongSummerDays · 22/09/2018 18:19

I never knew that about vanilla extract! Grin

rslsys · 22/09/2018 18:19

Went to buy our Christmas booze in Sainsbury's a few years ago as I had amassed £300 worth of Sainsbury's vouchers. Loaded up the checkout belt and was then refused as I had 22 year old DD2 with me and she had no ID.
Left the whole bloody lot on the belt and walked out . . .

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 18:31

So many of these stories are bonkers. Wonder whether supermarkets have signs up saying ‘you don’t have to lack common sense to work here, but it helps’.

I used to work in Sainsbury’s many years ago (Saturday job). I do remember laxatives being controlled (two bottles only) but nothing else.

Years later I worked in a research lab and needed large qualities of cod liver oil - had terrible trouble getting it - used to have to go to several shops to get enough .

Was buying a case of 6 beck’s blue (0.05% alcohol) in Sainsbury’s and got id’d. I was 37. I worked out on that ABV that I’d need to drink around 200 bottles to get mildly pissed, and I’d surely be dead with water intoxication well befor then.

Potplant2 · 22/09/2018 18:34

Who on earth abuses laxatives, and why?

(On second thoughts, I’m not sure I want to know)

Beautifulblue · 22/09/2018 18:36

@Cornettoninja Grin

BalthazarImpresario · 22/09/2018 18:37

I was id in morrisons recently for 4 beers. I'm 37 but the only id I have is an expired driving licence.
They refused to serve me even when I pointed out that it is only challenge 25, the law is 18 and they don't really think I look 17, she admitted that I didn't look under 18 and I was like.. Right so I have photo id that says in 37 I just need to renew it if I want to drive!? I don't always look 37 but I don't look anywhere near 25 let alone 18.

OftenHangry · 22/09/2018 18:43

@Potplant2 it was a problem for a while amongst young girls and boys. Used as a quick weight loss.

SneakyGremlins · 22/09/2018 18:50

I'm 20 and since growing scruff facial hair I get IDed less!

Successfully argued being IDed for Schloer. I asked the thicko working the till to show me where it said it contained alcohol. "But it's made from grapes!" Hmm I won that round.

Daisymay2 · 22/09/2018 18:54

Potplant. You would be surprised at the number of people who abuse laxatives. They get mentioned on pro-anorexia sites. It has been a concern for years.
Suprised no one has mentioned citric acid, I have had questions about wanting 3 small packs before now.
Teaspoons are used to clean up street drugs before injecting- other sizes are too big. They seem to get shop lifted as well.

Betsy86 · 22/09/2018 18:54

If you are a refused a sale because you have no id and then your mate standing next to you goes to buy it for you they know its for you and have to refuse the sale as they already asked you to prove your age which you couldn’t do, so they cant knowingly the sell them item to someone passsing it to you.
You will be asked for id on paracetamol even at calpol level.
Oh and you also will get it on energy drinks now as you have to be over 16.. happy shopping my fellow young looking adults lolx

SneakyGremlins · 22/09/2018 18:56

Betsy On energy drinks.. "Sorry, you can't buy this because you're under 16".

Arsey look from me and my passport usually produces some backpedaling.

LyndorCake · 22/09/2018 18:58

I went to Tesco on my own, bumped into someone I knew, exchanged pleasantries, tried to buy wine, they wouldn't serve me unless they saw her ID. Utter madness!

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 22/09/2018 18:59

I did the Tesco age restriction training once upon a time, it was very cautious. I suspect they'd rather have threads like this knocking about rather than 'my teenage son choked on battery sold to him ILLEGALLY by bastard TESCO MONSTERS' in the Daily Fail, or some such random nonsense.

I'm sure Amazon will deliver thirty dodgy ones to your front door within the hour for about two quid if you're desperate Grin

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 19:02

castor oil - not cod liver! And yes refused because it is used as a laxative so buying lots of bottles was seen as dodgy.

YouTheCat · 22/09/2018 19:06

Limes are very dangerous, as are other fresh fruit.

This is an instructional

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 19:06

Even my son would struggle to choke on an AA battery. I could understand them not selling them to toddlers but snotty teenagers? Grin

I do think the prize on this thread goes to a refusal to allow someone to buy a newspaper though.

All retailers have funny rules like this. Why single out Tesco?

Acopyofacopy · 22/09/2018 19:08

I clearly live a very sheltered life - you actually clean drugs with teaspoons??? Confused
At least it explains why I was IDed for buying 200 or so of them in Tesco for the school fair. I must clearly look like a prolific, dangerous teaspoon user.

SneakyGremlins · 22/09/2018 19:12

"School fair" Hmm

LegallyBrunet · 22/09/2018 19:12

I’m 23. In the past week I’ve been ID’d for ibuprofen and butter knives. But oddly enough not the forks I was buying with the knives which were much pointier and could probably have done more damage.

Betsy86 · 22/09/2018 19:14

sneakygremlins lol it is ridiculous wont be able to do anything in life without id at this rate x

Barmaid101 · 22/09/2018 19:15

Trying to but non alcoholic wine at age 28 and 38 weeks pregnant! If was for a Christmas party I was going to.
Apparently because it has alcohol in the title!
Sent a friend in to buy it for me in the end!

fieryginger · 22/09/2018 19:16

My, then, 13 year old DS wasn't allowed to buy his dad a box of Thornton's because one was a champagne flavoured one. Even if DS had eaten the single chocolate, it wouldn't have got him drunk 😵 bonkers.
