To think Tesco make it up as they go along

Son just popped out to buy some AA batteries from the Tesco down the road.

They refused to serve him saying they’re ‘not allowed to sell batteries to children’. Eh? Since when?

Ds3 is nearly 14 and has bought AA batteries from there (unaccompanied) before.

Vanilla is 18

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2018 16:33

Oh, alcohol in vanilla.... Who knew?!

EndeavourVoyage · 22/09/2018 16:36

Hold on, does this needing ID for all of you in a group even if one person who is paying has the correct ID now mean, if you are with your 10 year old DC and you buy a bottle of wine you can’t have it as your DC isn’t old enough😂😂😂. I often buy alcohol and they ID my daughter too if she happens to be with me, what age do they decide the whole group needs to be old enough for the products you are buying.

Dh and I were once asked for ID in sainsburys buying limes. When I asked the assistant why he said it was because they could be used as a weapon 😂

I once had a winning lottery ticket and walked to the counter with my 3yr old ds sat in the trolley seat. He had hold of the ticket and was excited to hand it to the cashier. She point blank refused to take it off him as he was "under 16" and it was against the law! At first I thought she was joking. So I had to take from my son to hand to the woman! Utterly ridiculous!

They should only refuse if they think it's a proxy sale - so if they think that an adult is buying it to give to a child.

Some of these examples are silly but I can't blame the staff. If they got caught not asking fir ID then the consequences might lead them to lose their job. I can understand someone erring on the side of caution.

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 16:45

A newspaper? What sort of newspaper?

I work in a shop that has challenge 25.

We have a till prompt if a barcode scans for something age restricted. Some items are lumped into categories they shouldn't be in e.g. lipsyl is in the medicine category but doesn't actually require ID

If I refuse to serve somebody without ID and they get another person to buy the item it's a proxy sale.

We get regular "test purchases" and if you fail you can face a fine and a final written warning

LakieLady · 22/09/2018 16:49

As for teaspoons? Are they often used as a weapon

I can't remember where I heard this, but apparently it IS possible to kill someone with a teaspoon. You insert the handle into their nostril, then hit the spoon end, which then goes straight into the brain, resulting in instant death.

(Now I've actually typed that, it sounds ridiculous and I think whoever told me must have been winding me up)

ElainaElephant · 22/09/2018 16:55

The vanilla extract was because it contains alcohol.

I'm tempted to try and buy some after 10pm to see if I'm allowed...

LionsTeeth · 22/09/2018 16:59

I got ID'd buying petrol a few weeks ago. Apparently you have to be 16. Luckily I had my driving license on me, because I don't know what they would have expected me to do if I couldn't prove I was over 16. Suck it out with a straw?!

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2018 16:59

MrsG - TBF, have you ever accidentally squirted lime juice into your eye? It really hurts...!

Basically the whole of Tescos should be restricted purchases, and to be on the safe side they should run them like the liquor stores in north America where there are no windows and you have to be 18 to even go inside. Because pretty much every household article can be dangerous in particular circumstances

MetalMickey22 · 22/09/2018 17:03

Come the revolution I'll arm myself with teaspoons.......

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 17:21

Do we need to stockpile teaspoons?

Devilishpyjamas · 22/09/2018 17:42

MetalMickey22 · 22/09/2018 17:44

Don't forget vanilla extract!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 22/09/2018 17:47

You can do that, but the teaspoons will all mysteriously disappear...

MRSMARMITE3 · 22/09/2018 17:52

I spent my whole adult life being IDed which I hated. Remember going in my 20s with my sister (also on her 20s and before the think 25 campaign) to order food and they refused to serve us as she didn't have ID. She argued, my mum came over who said "these are my daughters and they are in their 20s!" And they threw us out of the pub! Now I'm nearly 40 I've stopped getting IDed to my dismay. I work in a shop and I'm not till trained but when I am in tempted to ask everyone for ID just cos I want my revenge!

tmh88 · 22/09/2018 17:55

I was asked for ID at 38 weeks pregnant for a men’s no7 grooming kit in the 3 for 2 at boots... it had scissors and nail clippers in it..was clearly a Christmas present along with all the soap and glory sets..

MorningsEleven · 22/09/2018 18:01

I got stopped buying a lime at the self service tills in Asda because it came up as a controlled item.

StillRowing · 22/09/2018 18:03

I got ID'd a few weeks ago buying non alcoholic Kopparberg. Luckily had ID but challenged it anyway as it said non alcoholic on the packaging

hammeringinmyhead · 22/09/2018 18:06

I've been IDed for rootbeer. I did try and explain to the checkout assistant but it was like reasoning with a head of lettuce.
