Handmade Christmas Gifts.

I really feel like handmaking my families Christmas gifts this year. Would you be disappointed to receive a handmade gift? Or are there any handmade gifts that you've received that you absolutely love? Would love to hear your experiences.

Can you knit? I love hats, I wear a lot of them ... I would really really love if someone knitted me one. Many years ago, I asked my best friends for a matching scarf and gloves, she couldn't find any she liked so knitted them. This was about 18 years ago and I still have them, although they're in tatters 😂😂

LaurieMarlow · 21/09/2018 21:37

Honestly rack? I know how to make mulled wine and would have cinnamon and spices lying around anyway so it wouldn't do much for me.

I have just remembered my best homemade gift ever though. A bottle of sloe gin. It was divine Grin.

Bearbehind · 21/09/2018 21:38

A miniature bottle of wine is a large glass- surely it's not worth the hassle of mulling or the spices would be too much?

duckling84 · 21/09/2018 21:38

I may be in the minority (at least by mn standards) but I'm practically teetotal so really would not appreciate wine. It would just sit in the cupboard until the next school tombola.

The best handmade gifts are those which are tailored to the recipient and not a one gift to suit everybody idea

Didsomeonesaybunny · 21/09/2018 21:39

I’d be very grateful to receive a hamper of homemade gifts. Some ideas:

Candles
A knitted throw
Knitted hat and scarf
Bath salts
Fudge
Cakes
Toffee
Jams & chutneys
Savoury biscuits
Mulled wine (yum)
Butter rum
Chocolates

I can’t really wear constune jewellery so have to be careful with that.

JaimeLannister · 21/09/2018 21:39

I would like home made fudge, soaps or hat/scarf. Thanks very much.

Bearbehind · 21/09/2018 21:39

Sorry, just seen it was a full bottle of wine- still hate red wine 😂

rackhampearl · 21/09/2018 21:40

Bear, it wouldn't be a miniature bottle?? I would use a full size. But I'm hearing ya. Maybe sack that idea. Wink

OP, you sound lovely and I'm clearly a miserable cow 😂

Send me a gin maramadle and I'll see if I lighten up 😆

Bearbehind · 21/09/2018 21:43

That was supposed to say marmalade!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/09/2018 21:44

I once gave people jam I'd made. It was shit Grin

iMatter · 21/09/2018 21:44

I'd like to join your family please OP 😊

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/09/2018 21:45

I also gave out redcurrant gin I made. That was substantially less nice than normal gin. Maybe it's me...

Zintox · 21/09/2018 21:45

I like handmade things.

BUT I don't like: candles, jam, marmalade, chutney, or soaps, and I really don't like the red/mulled wine idea. That would be a really shit gift imo.

rackhampearl · 21/09/2018 21:45

Haha Bear, not at all. Constructive feedback is welcome. I'm no snowflake Grin If my batch of Gin marmalade works out then I'll send you one for sure. Watch this space. Wink (I'm quite a good cook/baker but I've never gifted food before)

I like red wine but I wouldn't go for the mulled wine pouch thing.

rackhampearl · 21/09/2018 21:47

I am so shocked at the Mulled wine not taking anyone's fancy??? Shock I thought it was so cute and Nordic. See this is why I needed to do this post to set me straight Grin

Mind you a friend made me jam one year - it was too thick and chewy and I didn't eat it - test whatever you are giving first.

MumUnderTheMoon · 21/09/2018 21:47

I am taking a break from crocheting Christmas gifts right now. I did my first crocheted Christmas last year and everyone really seemed to like it especially the kids. I also gift home made baked goods. Yum!

ifoundthebread · 21/09/2018 21:48

I Make as many gifts as I can, on the condition I feel its something the recipient would like. My mil appreciates anything handmade as she knows how much time and effort things take, especially with 2 young children, so I hammer Pinterest for her gifts.

bimbobaggins · 21/09/2018 21:48

I’m not a fan of homemade gifts and if someone was doing it to save money I’d rather they saved the money for themselves if they need it.sorry if I’m not phrasing that properly but as much as I love Christmas I’m not bothered about receiving gifts .

It’s a nice gesture if you know the people will like it.

rackhampearl · 21/09/2018 21:50

I am going to use DH as my taste tester. And he will tell me the gods honest truth. Mind you, I know he won't like the homemade gift idea. I suggest it every year and he just throws me his credit card saying why bother? Just buy them gifts. I get so stressed buying gifts for adults though. That's why I thought homemade gifts are more of a 'gesture'
I don't know. Maybe I'll sack it all off. Lol.

OP posts:
bimbobaggins · 21/09/2018 21:52

If you find it stressful why don’t you just sack off buying gifts altogether?

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 21/09/2018 21:53

Handmade soap is lovely, but make sure it's proper handmade and not melt and poor, which is very disappointing to use. I'll be making my Christmas soaps in the next few weeks, to be sure they've had plenty of time to cure and because I'll be too busy next month.

rackhampearl · 21/09/2018 21:55

Bimbobaggins I can't do that. Can I? What if everyone thinks I'm tight. I'm really not tight but what do you buy people in this day and age who go out and buy everything for themselves. Christmas is becoming more complicated. Confused
