to ask for reassurance with positive stories of tooth extractions

I unwisely saw far too many comments on MN about dry socket, and am (uncharacteristically for me) holding back tears about the extraction I'm having on Monday (and I've got to go to work now, so we really can't have tears, we just can't). I've had six extractions before (four wisdom, two others for orthodontic reasons) and never got this bothered about any of them, but this one's a cracked molar and it's overnight turned from uncomfortable if I bite on it, to really, really painful, all the time. Taking ibuprofen and cocodamol, but they aren't doing much so I have a weekend of just breathing (and working) and tolerating the feeling like someone's stuck a skewer through my jaw.
Orajel and clove oil just send me through the roof, so I think they're probably inflaming rather than calming.
Funny stories, positive stories, simple and unremarkable stories of how you had a tooth extracted and it all went well and you felt much better for getting it out, please! (And PLEASE no dry socket stories )
Sorry for unhinged rambling. TIA and a good weekend to all!

I had a cracked canine which needed removing and I was really worried. It was absolutely fine! I had an abscess above it and was in agony from that and it felt so much better as soon as it was out. I felt no pain at all during the extraction, it was well numbed. It came out within a minute or so. I was thinking once the anaesthetic wore off it would hurt but I had no pain from it. I just stuck to easy to eat food for a couple of days and it healed with no issues. I have a small gap now but you can’t see it when I smile so I don’t mind it but could get an implant in future. The thought of having it done was so much worse for me than it was. Hope yours goes well.

MatildaTheCat · 21/09/2018 16:38

I had a premolar that initially cracked then eventually fractured right down through the root which sounds similar in terms of the pain you describe. Getting it removed was a huge relief in terms of pain though obviously I wasn’t happy. No post op trauma whatsoever and an implant fitted as soon as it was possible.

Musicalmistress · 21/09/2018 16:46

My actual extraction was pretty awful - for the dentist! I was totally numb but ended up with a surgical extraction. Was sore for a few days but healed well & had no further bother.

Talkstotrees · 21/09/2018 16:48

I’ve had two teeth extracted in the last few years. With both of them I waited far too long to agree to the extraction and put up with multiple extremely painful infections. Both times the result of the extraction was immediate and permanent relief. No pain, just a dull ache for a few hours, and regret that I hadn’t acted sooner. No dry sockets here.

Both children also had multiple extractions for cosmetic reasons - no dry sockets for them either.

Try not to worry Flowers

I am having a tooth out on Monday too.
Last time this dentist took one of my teeth out she said 'That's it, done!' and I still thought she was getting ready!

WhoWants2Know · 21/09/2018 16:52

Mine have mostly been a blessed relief! The injections are uncomfortable, but it's all over before you know it. And mouths heal quickly. Bite on gauze and rinse with salt water and it'll be great.

Knitjob · 21/09/2018 16:52

I've been thinking about this too, my 6 yr old is having a tooth out soon. Mumsnet is the only place I have ever heard of a dry socket so I imagine it's not all that common.

RJnomore1 · 21/09/2018 16:54

I had to get a wisdom tooth out two weeks ago.

I was quite stressed and after I was a bit shaky and had to sit for ten before I could drive but there was no pain, no hassle and it's healed beautifully. The thought of it was far far worse than the actual extraction.

TheFillijonk · 21/09/2018 16:54

I had a wisdom tooth out this week. No problems at all and even though I'm a massive wimp it was absolutely fine.

IggyAce · 21/09/2018 16:59

My daughter age 11 had a cracked tooth extracted after just the injections the week of her STATs. She didn’t want to wait the 6weeks plus for the referral to have it taken out with sedation because it was painful. She was so brave and the dentist was amazing with her. It healed really quickly and she didn’t need any further pain relief after around 2 days.

piglet81 · 21/09/2018 17:05

I had a wisdom tooth extracted after it broke - I was in agony, quite heavily pregnant (so only taking paracetamol) and it was such a blessed relief when the lovely dentist took it out for me. Literally no pain at all. Best of luck - I'm sorry you've got to wait until Monday but it'll be absolutely fine. Flowers

I had a cracked molar removed when I was 38 weeks pregnant, I had been in and out the emergency dentist all Christmas including Christmas Day where they packed it too high and I was in agony, no one would extract it as I was pregnant and they wanted to X-ray first but on the 29th I begged and said I couldn't deliver the baby in this much pain and I was getting induced in a week, they pulled it out and the relief was amazing! I just drove straight back to work and was fine

barberousbarbara · 21/09/2018 17:06

I had an awkward wisdom tooth taken out. I was stressed for two weeks leading up to the appointment. The tooth came out so quickly I didn't even realise it was out. I had no problems afterwards. My DP had a couple taken out. One was difficult and took the dentist an hour to get out but DP didn't feel it and was eating KFC the following day.

Mrsharrison · 21/09/2018 17:13

I had a wisdom tooth that was growing sideways. Dentist wanted me to go to hospital to have it extracted. I refused. So she took it out. It took nearly 2 hours. Near the end she was sitting on my lap holding down my forehead with her hand as she had to saw into my jawbone. Great times!

Jimmers · 21/09/2018 17:32

Honestly, I’m the biggest wuss when it comes to dentistry, and having my molar out was completely not worth the anxiety leading up to it. Dentist was brilliant, and got the whole of the tooth, root & abscess in one piece. Fascinating to look at!

kmc1111 · 21/09/2018 18:06

I had a molar out a few months ago. Wasn’t an easy extraction (not painful, just took ages) but it healed fast. I was only a little uncomfortable for a few days, and that was mostly because I shared your fear of dry socket. As unpleasant as that makes it I think it actually helps. If you’re scared of dry socket you’ll be really careful and and do a good job avoiding the things that can dislodge the clot.

DolorestheNewt · 21/09/2018 18:22

Awww, you're a great bunch. Knew I could rely on you! Grin

Ive had one molar out, not pretending it was fun, but with enough numbing it was very stressful and unpleasant but painless. Bled for a few hours but after a couple of days no major issues.

CrabbyPatty · 21/09/2018 18:51

Oooh just seen this post..... I genuinely had a positive experience. I pretty much exaggerated what I was having done and told everybody I was having 'oral surgery' just to ensure that I got the relevant amount of sympathy. When I got there it was literally seconds and I was like "oh... we're done?" and that was it.

AriadnePersephoneCloud · 21/09/2018 19:03

I've had five teeth extracted, all four wisdoms and one I cracked during pregnancy and that just got worse and worse. Was so glad when all of them went and honestly didn't feel a thing during. The wisdom teeth hurt a little after but the last one just felt sooooo much better. Hope that helps xxx

incinemasnow · 21/09/2018 19:10

I had a tooth out a couple of months ago, had to be referred for the sedation as i was so scared. I was only in the room for a few minutes & no pain or dry socket afterwards. I did make the most of it & had a couple of days on the sofa with Netflix but only because i wanted the sympathy after my 'operation' Grin

washewihersen · 21/09/2018 19:22

I had a cracked molar that had to be extracted a couple of years ago. The tooth had a large filing and just shattered when I bit down on something hard.

It was a tricky extraction as the tooth was in pieces and I was sick with worry beforehand. I didn't go for sedation, I just gritted my teeth, so to speak, but I honestly didn't feel a thing. It was absolutely fine. Some pulling but no worse than the root canal is gad in the same tooth previously. The dentist and nurse kept checking I was ok and were so reassuring all the way through.

You won't like this bit - I did get dry socket afterwards. The dentist had wanted a follow up two days afterwards anyway so gave me some antibiotics there and then in the surgery. It wasn't painful enough to keep me awake at night and was almost gone in a couple of days after that. The worst bit was how sick the tablets made me feel the first couple of days but within a couple of weeks it had all settled.

Sweettoothfairy · 21/09/2018 19:31

My sister who worked as a dental nurse gave me good advice when I was nervous having a tooth extracted. She said getting the tooth out was the dentist’s problem not mine. I’d been advised it may have to be drilled and taken out in pieces this didn’t happen in the end it came out in seconds and there was only about 25% of it left below the gum line.
If you’ve had extractions before without a dry socket there’s no reason to think you’ll have one this time.

Pickleypickles · 21/09/2018 19:36

I had my top two wisdom teeth out, I was very careful with them because like you I'd read horror stories about dry socket and stuff but honestly by the next day I wasn't in pain and they had healed enough for me to not worry when I was eating and stuff within a week.

DolorestheNewt · 22/09/2018 02:58

Thank you to everybody... it's going to be a long weekend but it can't last for ever!
