She's got a decent pair of curtains. Why would you buy another cheaper pair? How does that save money? The kids have a football goal. Why would you buy another, crappier, cheaper one when you've already got one? HOW IS THAT SAVING MONEY. This programme is giving me the rage.

i would agree with you, but i think they are on about making smarter choices in the future (when those ware out or whatever)

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2018 20:47

I always say this to DH Grin
She could save £50 by buying a cheaper hoover. Oh, time traveller is she?

AmabelleOnabike · 19/09/2018 20:48

And the outdoor gear!! Why buy them new stuff?! The programme is an exercise is wasting licence payers money!

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/09/2018 20:50

I guess it's showing them that expensive isn't always best or cheaper things are fine when they shop in future. Not sure they'll be buying a house anytime soon though.

SingingSands · 19/09/2018 20:51

Literally said the same to DH re curtains and footy goal!

It's a rubbish programme.

Saving £40k for a house deposit is not going to be made or lost on a twelve quid garden fork FFS Hmm

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/09/2018 20:52

I like it - it's good entertainment and is good for showing my kids brands and cost aren't always all that!

BluthsFrozenBananas · 19/09/2018 20:55

Ha, I literally just had the same conversation with DH. The food version works, but no one is going to sell their expensive stuff and buy cheaper things.

Miladymilord · 19/09/2018 20:55

Also the Outwell blow up bed is the nuts. They clearly couldn't bear to admit that the most expensive was the best.

Miladymilord · 19/09/2018 20:57

It's pathetic. He's got a pair of converse just don't buy any more trainers for a year ffs. Did they even mention that they shouldn't go on 3 holidays a year??

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 19/09/2018 20:58

I quite like the food version, even though it's full of idiots who are surprised that pregrated cheese is more expensive than a block.

raffle · 19/09/2018 20:59

I’m sure they were well chuffed to realise they could save such a wedge on the kids tablets...
Except the kids already have tablets, so fucking pointless really!

Palegreenstars · 19/09/2018 21:00

But it’s not like you could blow up all the beds and test thrm in real life so what even was the point in that bit?

I quite like the food version but this is dumb.

Why do they need new Goggles and trainers??

Usernameinuseffs · 19/09/2018 21:00

I said the same thing about the stuff they've already got. I am however a marketers dream as I've just brought 3 of the toothbrushes that won in the test. Half price at the moment too so woohoo.

troodiedoo · 19/09/2018 21:00

yanbu. it is a rage inducing show.

JLG19 · 19/09/2018 21:00

I watched this for the first time last week... Thought exactly the same as you, OP. Ridiculous programme! Not watching again.

Starlight345 · 19/09/2018 21:01

I thought the same look at the money you wasted.

TomHardysNextWife · 19/09/2018 21:01

I'm still open mouthed that they were renting a 4 bed house instead of downsizing and saving to buy their own. And going on holiday 3 times a year.

Seriously WTF. Rather be in debt than securing their futures. You can't help some people.

Palegreenstars · 19/09/2018 21:03

Also there was an electric toothbrush on the show that cost £300! I’ve never heard something so bonkers

Miladymilord · 19/09/2018 21:06

I'm never watching again! My blood pressure can't take it!

It's a load of utter guff.

It also sends me nuts that they clearly seem to be valuing stuff at RRP? My house would look like a spend well for less heaven. But actually almost everything was got second hand or half price etc. I guess that’s why I’m not on spend well for less.

Cookie79 · 19/09/2018 21:19

Oh this programme drives me mad - even though I like the Eat well for less one.

Even DD (10) gets annoyed and last week shouted “but they’ve already bought it where’s the saving?” (Probably because she hears me shout it most weeks Blush )

Still watch it every week though.

Lunde · 19/09/2018 21:22

I think the aim is to change their future financial decisions by changing the way they shop in the future when they replace items.

However this year they seem to have got some really spoilt families participating who was to save £000s but don't want to give up the bling, the toys, the designer labels or the holidays - then they wonder why they have no savings!

This family was very annoying - wanted to save for a house without actually saving - not even prepared to wear unbranded trainers!

Petalflowers · 19/09/2018 21:22

I thought the same last week when they featured a cheaper kettle. Why? They already had a kettle. Fair enough to show that cheaper clothes can be as stylish, and well made as more expensive ones, but not one off purchases.

The food version makes more sense, as the savings can b3 made on a weekly basis, and not ad hoc.

scrappydappydoo · 19/09/2018 21:24

This show drives me nuts. Sometimes it’s better to spend a bit more on something that is better quality and will last - camping equipment is a good example - a cheap sleeping bag will be freezing but I’ve had my slightly more expensive one for over 20yrs. I also buy most things in sales or in charity shops. It would be better if they showed how to get bargains e.g wait til Black Friday and those tablets will be even cheaper and yes places like the book people for cheap kids books.

Atlantea · 19/09/2018 21:27

Saving £40k for a house deposit is not going to be made or lost on a twelve quid garden fork FFS hmm

but spending more than you need to on anything add up, and the more they dont spend on branded items - the more they can save

its not about replacing what they have now its about buying cheaper later
