She's got a decent pair of curtains. Why would you buy another cheaper pair? How does that save money? The kids have a football goal. Why would you buy another, crappier, cheaper one when you've already got one? HOW IS THAT SAVING MONEY. This programme is giving me the rage.

Thingintheattic, I think SWFL should be compulsory viewing at secondary schools as a lesson in how easy it is to get into debt by mindlessly spending and living beyond one's means.

Yes, agree.

Miladymilord · 20/09/2018 13:26

Compulsory viewing??!! Are you fucking kidding me??

It's a terrible programme with absolutely no sense behind it whatsoever

Four holidays a year? And they wonder why they can't afford a house

But they all seemed to be camping. That is not a holiday.

Ahh, I didn't see the whole programme so I was going on just the comments. Didn't realise it was camping, obviously way cheaper.
I'd rather have one proper, comfortable week away though, than two holidays in a tent. But then I've never really taken to camping. Some people adore it so to them I suppose it is a proper holiday...

Doingreat · 20/09/2018 13:31

Yes @miladymylord it's a terrible programme no doubt. It's also a cautionary tale. Not for the financial savvy which is questionable, but to learn lessons from people who have got themselves into difficult situations financially.

Dotty1970 · 20/09/2018 13:31

Google comedian Micki Flanagan on 'eat well for less' .... Sums this utter tripe up Grin

ThingInTheAttic · 20/09/2018 13:34

Oh, the advice is a bit daft for sure, but it's worth watching just to use the families' mistakes as a lesson in how not to behave with your money.
"See, children. This family was improvident and spent money way beyond their means and NOW look what's happened!"... etc etc

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 13:42

Does the Miele one wash clothes £650 better and will it last 3 times as long?

In my experience the answer to this is yes. Our Miele dishwasher lasted over 40 years...

Airaforce · 20/09/2018 13:52

I got the impression that the mother was very reluctant to make the significant financial sacrifices because she was obsessed about providing memories for her children. What she failed to understand was that her obsession for an extravagant lifestyle has left them with little savings. They lost their former home because they didn't have any savings to fall back on when they became redundant. They still don't have any savings so if the same situation was to happen again, they would sink financially again very quickly.

Sarcelle · 20/09/2018 13:55

The couple this week were saying it was all about their kids but kids need love not consumerism. They wanted the detached house, the nice holidays, the high end coffee machine and the Converses, not the kids. They were not prepared to give up anything really. This series has had complete financial and spoilt dimwits on it. Help a family in real need rather than a family in greed.

RayneDash · 20/09/2018 13:58

@milady I said this to my other half lol lol it's not like she buys them every week

Airaforce · 20/09/2018 14:09

*@Sarcelle you're right, they kept mentioning that it was for the children but it didn't appear to be. If it was for the children, then they'd scale down the spending, reduce the 4 holidays to 2, the 4 bed house to a 3 bed and bank the spare cash in the housing deposit fund. They weren't prepared to do any of that, they're kidding themselves if they think all that excess was for the children's benefit.

Bumbl · 20/09/2018 14:26

This gives me the rage too. Last series I think it was, the Dad had a really expensive vintage car in a garage that they paid rent for and never used. But the advice was to sell all the children’s books and toys and just go to a library! Ridiculous.

Harleypuppy · 20/09/2018 14:41

I think they used their dcs as an excuse to keep spending money and have all their holidays. They had no idea of reality. When is the Amazon echo an essential? Also why rent such a big house when they admitted the youngest boy wanted to share a room? They thought they could still have what they wanted and somehow get money to buy a house! I think in every situation it's better to own your own house. Every time the parents were asked to change they refused, but the kids had to have the cheaper option.

CatboySpeed · 20/09/2018 14:46

What is it with all these children with expensive after shave and hair gel? Surely it’s their own fault for buying it for them?

And yes I don’t get the perfume thing either, I’ve had some bottles for years. Do people really go through several bottles a month?

That women last week really annoyed me, she spent her last £13 in her purse on getting her nails done because she just had to. No she didn’t.

MulberryPeony · 20/09/2018 15:03

I was astonished the parents on last nights program thought they could buy a 400k house with no savings, no equity and no spare monthly cash to actually pay for the increase of mortgage payments over rental costs.

This series seems to have a lot of serious overspenders compared to the last one.

Member984815 · 20/09/2018 17:52

My kids love it and I watch with them , I couldn't watch last night because the storm knocked my power out now I have real fomo . I'm recording the repeat Sunday but there's another storm predicted

MissMarplesKnitting · 20/09/2018 18:02

I couldn't get over the nails thing either.

I did mine on Sunday. Just normal polish. Base coat, two of colour, top coat. It's now Thursday night and no chips.it still looks great. Reckon I spend well under £100 a year on base/top coats and colours. And I get to change it whenever I fancy.

I just understand how people can justify spending £1000 a year on nails, all the designer gear etc and then whinge they're skint?! That's our holiday cottage paid for....in temporary nail colour?!! It's batshit.

Why people instantly buy the most expensive, and don't shop about....then wonder how they end up in debt.

I don't get when people started being so utterly devoid of common sense?!

Kemer2018 · 20/09/2018 18:09

Why do they always feature family's who are well off?

I'd be more impressed with their financial wisdom if they used a family who want to save money, who shop at Aldi, wear chazza shop bargains, take packed lunch to work, ebay their unwanted shite.
If they could save money for THAT family, I'd be truly impressed.
Formula seems to be a family " ooh, we spend lots, we have lots, we want to brag about that on telly" . Under some bullshit guise of money saving. T.v. for cabbages.

WhirlwindHugs · 20/09/2018 22:08

Some of the holidays were camping, some were staying at her mums place in Spain and some were standard holidays. They said they'd gone to eurodisney and then Italy for £5k including spends.

Which is probably not bad budgeting for a family if 5, but if you can't afford it, you can't!

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/09/2018 01:44

Why do they always feature family's who are well off

They are not so well off if they are on this show

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/09/2018 04:54

The people who are already making savings by shopping in Aldi and charity shops don't have much more room to save money, so I don't know what they could achieve?

member you can watch the program on the BBC iplayer whenever you like on any device, laptop, smart TV etc.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/09/2018 04:56

They are not so well off if they are on this show

Of course they are. Having plenty of money that has all been spent, mostly on non essentials doesn't change that.

BackInTime · 21/09/2018 08:55

A big change of mindset is needed when it comes to what people think they need and financial security should be a big priority especially in the rocky road to Brexit. If the shot hits the fan your perfume bottles and designer jeans will be of little help but the cushion of savings will.

BackInTime · 21/09/2018 08:56

Shit Hmm

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/09/2018 11:25

Living in a big rented house with loads of gadgets and stuff and not able to afford a deposit for a mortgage doesn’t make you well off.

We used to call people like this “All fur coat and no knickers”
Meaning it was all for show but when you looked closer they couldn’t afford the basics.
