I have seen some YouTube tutorials were people cut their own hair. End result looks quite good if am honest I know it won't be nowhere as good as if I went to a salon but money is a bit tight lately (car purchase then mot needed work doing then bloody vandals smashed the windscreen all within 2 months

I have ordered hair scissors might get a box dye as well? Has or does anyone cut there own hair is long midway down my back not too thin but not thick at all.

AIBU to give myself the chop Blush

Is the mn haircut the one where you tie your hair in a ponytail at the front and then cut it? I've done that several times and it turned out great, including once when I decided to cut about 8 inches off! I do have long curly hair though, so it's fairly forgiving.

Is that MN haircut? It's been around youtube and hair sites ever tbh. I've been doing my hair with hairband for last nearly decade

@Boswellox my last cut was a long 3 in order to self harm. I'm praying for growth before I need my next relief.

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 20/09/2018 23:41

Boswellox I totally identify with that. I also had a thing for years where I would swear it was damaged and awful and people were staring. Then I'd cut it off and see a beautiful silky ponytail in my hand. It was just when it was attached to me IYSWIM?

I did the MN haircut for years, it was fine... Good at the front, too longer at the back for my liking though.

I did the version where you brush all your hair into a 'unicorn horn' on your forehead, tie a hairband a hands width down from your forehead, then cut it off above the hairband.

Money is a bit less tight now and I go back to the hairdressers, but to be honest I think the front half of my head was layered better when I did it!

I do it to trim my hair

When I have a lot cut off I go to the hairdresser but can’t afford £50 every few months

I have lots lots of hair and it’s bushy/wavy so doesn’t show too much if I make a mistake

I did an MN cut last night after reading this thread and an extremely old one - I love it!

I do have very, very thick, wavy hair though so it is super forgiving.

The curls have bounced right up and I have the side swept fringe that I always ask the hairdresser for but never get!

I HATE going to the hairdresser so I am super happy with this revelation. Thanks OP for starting this thread!

Thanks for replies re "self harming" via hair. For me the power of it was a "change" I could enact immediately.

The ‘MN haircut’ (ponytail at the front of your head) gives you layers but doesn’t touch the longest parts of your hair, in my experience. The first time I did it I loved it, but the second time I realised that my scraggly lengths were still there and all I’d done was make them look scruffier by shortening the rest of my hair.

I now trim the lengths of my hair by dividing it into two and then tying it all together in a ponytail under my chin. A quick snip and the horrible tatty ends are gone. I can then use the ‘MN haircut’ method to layer it a bit if necessary. I love it and it’s honestly as good as any haircut I’ve ever had at a salon.

My hair is long, fairly straight and very low-maintenance, though, so I don’t think it would work for everyone. I used to go for the cheapest possible dry trim at the hairdressers, and even then I resented paying £15 for what would sometimes take literally 30 seconds!
