To cut my own hair?

MrsMotherHen · 19/09/2018 19:56

I have seen some YouTube tutorials were people cut their own hair. End result looks quite good if am honest I know it won't be nowhere as good as if I went to a salon but money is a bit tight lately (car purchase then mot needed work doing then bloody vandals smashed the windscreen all within 2 months

I have ordered hair scissors might get a box dye as well? Has or does anyone cut there own hair is long midway down my back not too thin but not thick at all.

AIBU to give myself the chop Blush

I always cut my own hair, as well as the DCs/DP. I also use box dyes. Can't fathom why anyone would spend £100s on hair colour every few weeks when you can do it for £5! But then I have black hair so it doesn't matter if the colour is a bit 'flatter' and more uniform than a natural colour/highlights etc.

I got my DCs to give me an undercut the other day, just pinned the top half up, asked DD (11) to comb a straight line across the back and used the clippers to whizz it off. Wasn't entirely straight so DS (13) finished it off - job done! It's only hair. It will grow back. If I had long hair I'd definitely trim it myself. Can't see the point of paying someone to take half an inch off your split ends.

Be careful with the MN/front ponytail haircut though - its tricky to get right, unless you want to look like Dave Hill from Slade.

I cut my own hair most of the time as always hate salon cuts. I’ve recently let a friend who used to be a hairdresser do it, but I still often prefer it when I do it myself.

Mine is curly/wavy and to just below my shoulders. I don’t like it too neat and don’t have a fringe, but do put layers in.

Double mirror set up is good, I do it while it’s dry, with a razor rather than scissors and usually make adjustments over a few days.

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 20/09/2018 09:03

I cut mine recently. I was so glad my doorbell went because it interrupted me just in time. I always cut too much.

formerbabe · 20/09/2018 09:06

I cut my own hair and layer the front...I hate the hairdressers.

But...don't just use any scissors you have lying around the house. You absolutely do need proper hair cutting scissors. Other scissors can really damage your hair and create split ends.

I trimmed my own fringe and lopped about 3inches off the ends last weekend. Got dh to trim any longer bits I'd missed.
For a number of reasons I haven't been to the hairdresser since April. Its only hair - it grows so as long as you don't try anything too ambitious how disastrous could it be?

Destinesia · 20/09/2018 09:15

this?

Destinesia · 20/09/2018 09:24

just noticed, those hair cutting clips are way cheaper on amazon

MrsMotherHen · 20/09/2018 12:14

well my sissors arrived this morning....after googling the mymsnet haircut I went and gave it a go! I love it so far it doesnt look much different although can see the layers myself and it does feel more swooshy. I havent styled it yet so will know later once its all blow dryed. Here's a before and after.

Looks great - you can definitely see the layers. I think long hair is pretty forgiving to be fair, so even if you notice something isn’t exactly symmetrical once you dry it, nobody else will!

Camomila · 20/09/2018 12:53

I do it using the upside down high ponytail and two hairbands method (one at the bottom). It even gives me a fringe.

It looks nice but I've got curly hair so you can't see if its not even!

ChikiTIKI · 20/09/2018 13:03

Looks good! :) I have cut my hair once using ponytail method. Seemed alright!

bsbabas · 20/09/2018 13:06

Doesn't look bad actually but its not a brilliant idea to cut your own hair I go ceillys 11 quid!

BeenThereDone · 20/09/2018 13:14

Did it once, never ever again!! 😂

Kool4katz · 20/09/2018 13:51

If you're just trying to save money, why don't you go to a salon based in a hairdressing training centre/college? The cuts and colours are very cheap and they're fully supervised. If you're in London and can afford the time, try one of the Sassoon Academies. I trained with them and they're brilliant.

I don't know what scissors you bought but cheap hairdressing scissors don't stay sharp for very long and they need to be razor sharp to ensure you don't create split ends. My last pair cost £250 and I paid £20 to get another old pair properly sharpened.

peachgreen · 20/09/2018 13:59

I've had more compliments on my self-cut hair than any other haircut ever. I have curly hair though which helps.

peachgreen · 20/09/2018 14:00

@Boswellox That's how I ended up cutting my own hair. Went a bit bonkers due to severe PND and chopped it all off. Thankfully it worked!

MarcieBluebell · 20/09/2018 14:03

I've cut my own hair for years. Its easy.

BillywigSting · 20/09/2018 14:07

When I have a fringe it needs cutting minimum once a week because it grows so bloody fast. Faster than the rest of the hair on my head. So I cut it myself. I find hairdressers rarely get it quite how I want it to look anyway.

My hair is ridiculously thick and wavy, so I can get away with trimming the ends myself.

I wouldn't do it if it was straight and sleek though, any mistakes or odd lengths would be much more obvious.

I get away with it because mine is a bit of a shaggy mess anyway with a double crown and a cows lick it doesn't so much grow as sprout.

OftenHangry · 20/09/2018 14:07

I do. Over the head and with hair band. Last quote from hairdresser really helped me to get brave enough to try itGrin I have really long hair though and some little imperfections hide well

noeffingidea · 20/09/2018 14:08

I cut mine, I do it in 2 stages. Firstly the high pony tail, then I do 2 bunches at the front, because I don't like a big difference between my layers. I'm really tempted to get some clippers and cut it all off.

Rednaxela · 20/09/2018 14:28

Also wondering what "the mn haircut" is HmmBlush

cheeseoverchocolate · 20/09/2018 14:36

I cut my husband's and he cuts mine. Neither of us is a hairdresser. It's all a bit hit and miss but overall ok. I basically dislike going to the hairdresser, them touching my hair, having to make small talk, etc.

morningconstitutional2017 · 20/09/2018 14:56

You won't know until you try but be aware that it probably isn't as easy as it looks. I've had a few disasters in my time and have wondered why I didn't leave well alone. Plus of course you can always fall back on a professional if it all goes wrong.

JynxaSmoochum · 20/09/2018 15:40

I got really fed up one foul day last winter spring after yet another day of my long, increasingly dry-endy hair escaping from under my hood and getting drenched. I had a random urge to stick a colour on it and hack a good 8 inches off the ends. The layers at the front went a bit wrong so I hacked a fringe in for the first time in 20 years! It worked rather well!

I tend to find it difficult to ask for something different at the hairdressers and I found it quite cathartic snipping away here and there.

My hair has a mix of tones, but goes darker and flatter in the winter. I like a semi permanent mahogony to warm it up which shows up well on the lighter strands. I don't have to worry about roots as it fades off as it grows.

I just can't be bothered to go to the hairdressers!

NTitled · 20/09/2018 17:27

Maybe you can get away with it if you are lucky enough to have curly/wavy hair. Mine is poker straight. I do Groupon for cutting (pay £12-14 for a cut and finish), and root touch-up kits. I used to pay hundreds when I was married, but sadly not an option now!
