To ask which Patisserie Valerie celebration cake I should get?

Birthday coming up. Want a cake from patisserie Valerie after admiring them in the window of the one in local city centre for a while.

I do like their individual classes cakes, though I’m aware hey aren’t as good as they were 5 years ago.

Has anyone bought one and would recommend a flavour?

I've read repeatedly on here that they don't taste as good as they look. It might be worth asking a local baker to make something similar which actually tastes good. No idea which flavour - they all look lovely.

Mrskeats · 17/09/2018 19:22

None they are overpriced and supported Brexit whilst pretending to be European.
Find a good local baker.
HTH.

I was thinking of getting the Habana Gateau or the Framboise Gateau, as I love cream, but not sure if it’s a better choice to get a cake as it’ll last longer/be harder to get wrong?

clearly spends s lot of time thinking about desert

A birthday cake made by a local baker would probably cost me £50-£100! And I’m suspicious of them after eating some truly shit slices of extravagant, princess themed bespoke cakes at children’s birthday etc

My in laws used to always get them. I am a cake lover but I am not a fan of Pat Val at all.... agree they look fantastic but the do not taste great at all, too sweet and sickly for me

TulipsInBloom1 · 17/09/2018 19:26

None. They are awful.

Get a Costco Red Velvet and eat the whole thing yourself. Just me?

LEMtheoriginal · 17/09/2018 19:27

Our local Pat Val got a 0 score on a recent food hygiene jnspection.

livingthegoodlife · 17/09/2018 19:28

I had one and was disappointed. Bland.

DorasBob · 17/09/2018 19:29

Which one did you get Livingthegoodlife?

I had a piece of strawberry gateaux there recently - absolutely divine!

perhapstomorrow · 17/09/2018 19:34

How about Konditor and Cook.

Ooh- so many choices. They all mainly
Look nice. I like the featured one.

AwkwardSquad · 17/09/2018 19:37

They’re rank, don’t bother. Sickly, soggy and bland.

flugelhorn81 · 17/09/2018 19:41

Oh yes @perhapstomorrow Konditor and Cook are the best - I love their curly wurly cake. But I think they're only in London - not sure where OP is?

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/09/2018 19:41

OMG yes Costco red velvet. Very reasonable price and delicious

greendale17 · 17/09/2018 19:42

I got the strawberry gateau cake- it was so disappointing- it did not taste of anything and that is not an exaggeration. The sponge was so artificial and ridiculously light- too light for a gateau. I would never recommend Patisserie Valerie cakes. They aren’t even made on site.

MamaOfTwoBoys · 17/09/2018 19:49

We've recently had a chocolate pat val one.... it wasn't awful but it definitely didn't taste as good as it looked... Hmm

Lebranic · 17/09/2018 19:52

I think they are all frozen and defrosted. Very disappointing.

Gilead · 17/09/2018 19:52

Costco carrot cake of chocolate fudge. Enormous and only a tenner!

AmIUnderstandingThisCorrectly · 17/09/2018 19:54

Pat Val custard slice is lovely..though obviously they call it something far more refined.

Nacreous · 17/09/2018 19:55

We had the white chocolate dream cake and it was definitely very rich and sweet but it was tasty!

I don’t think a lack of cream will be a problem in any of them...

Nacreous · 17/09/2018 19:55

Haven’t had one for 5 years thoug

DorasBob · 17/09/2018 19:56

I am definitley partial to the costco chocolate fudge one!

I think I’m leaning towards a Gateau, as I love their Mille-feuille Durban to the cream stuff they put in it. I’m very pregnant, and all I want is cream!!!

Maybe I should get a giant fruit tart though, which I’m also very partial to? Hmmmm

Someone brought some in to work and it was beautiful. It was chocolate gateaux. If you like your sweet desserts you'd like this.

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/09/2018 19:56

I just want cake now. Any cake will do!
