I need to pop off later and pick up a gift for someone who goes on mat. leave tomorrow. I am just after a token gift (under £10) and wondered if any of you had received anything that was a particularly memorable, useful or special gift without it being mega expensive. My fall back plan is a nice book. Hit me with your suggestions.

I liked getting something for their room - a clock, picture, name bunting or something but that's probably out of budget.

Weaning stuff (nice cup or crockery set) or teething necklace was good

Really nice soft dribble bibs from amazon - lovejoy, nice designs and a comfier shape than traditional ones.

Boots do nice little bell / rattle things - brite starts or something?

Someone got me a set of organic natural baby products. I liked the moisturiser so much I still use it. A posh hand cream for mum is also nice as she will forever be washing her hands

Most people will give blankets or clothes so it's nice to get something different

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 17/09/2018 15:29

Really nice natural hand cream as Mum will wash hands a zillion times a day. That was my best gift.

butlerswharf · 17/09/2018 15:43

A thermos mug for night feed times

littlecabbage · 17/09/2018 15:49

IMO Peepo is the best baby book. We must have read ours a million times!

This season, a cute woolly hat and/or mittens will be v useful. I'd go for 0-3 months rather than newborn.

Chocolate or cake always appreciated by a new Mum!

If you can find it Where Is The Green Sheep? by Mem Fox kept DS enthralled from about 9 months to 2 years. He had all the classics, but that cut through from a very young age.

liquidrevolution · 17/09/2018 16:01

I would have loved flowers but nobody bought me any.

The best gift by far was a giant Costco carrot cake. Dh hates nuts and at 10 days old DD was too young for weaning so it was mine all mine Grin

Harleypuppy · 17/09/2018 16:01

My neighbour got us a Chinese takeaway.

Hospitaldramafamily · 17/09/2018 16:03

Muslins- the really big ones. Or one of those cloth squares (a toy) with tags all around it

GlitterShit · 17/09/2018 16:04

One of these. A rainmaker. Gently tipping it up and down used to send the DT's to sleep. Best gift we got.

Brownies from Gower Cottage. So good I’ve sent them to every friend who’s had a baby since! Bit more than £10 for a box though but worth every delicious penny

Posh coffee or tea for mum. Chocolate that you know she likes. An appointment card for a cut and blow dry when baby is a couple of months old.

I was bought a fleece blanket for ds, absolutely bomb-proof, must have been washed ten thousand times and was used for just about every task you could put a piece of fabric through.

Voucher book with things like homecooked meal, an hours babysitting while mum has a bath and proper hairwash, an hours washing and ironing/housework?

TillyTheTiger · 17/09/2018 16:21

My auntie got me some champneys body souffle and shower gel, it smelled gorgeous and meant on the rare occasions I got ten minutes to shower in the first few months after baby arrived it felt like a proper treat. We also got tons of nice toys/books/clothes for DS but the champneys stuff was the only present that was just for me so I really appreciated it!

GrumbleBumble · 17/09/2018 16:37

Thanks for all the lovely ideas. It's for my hairdresser so someone I see every couple of months but don't know well. She doesn't know the sex of the baby and I don't feel I know her well enough to offer to change the beds/make dinner etc.
TK Maxx was a great call. I got a lovely neutral soft cotton blanket that will go with any decor /colourway. And a lovely soft jingley ball toy (I'd forgotten how much DS loved his). I went a couple of pounds over budget to pop in some nice chocs and handcream for mum. I'm having my hair done tomorrow and it will be the last time I see her before the baby is born. I know her last day is sometime this week but I think she has about six weeks to go.

Eternally trendy single male friend arrived with a box set of The Wire (11 years ago pre my Netflixs) and a massive box of flavoured macaroons and said 'Don't suppose you'll be out much nowadays, so I got you something to watch'. DH and I were thrilled.

LaGruffaloGrumble · 17/09/2018 20:13

I’m probably too late to help now, but I got a little gift parcel from my wonderful mum in law of posh pate and stinky cheese, biscuits and a non-tippable, insulated mug that kept a cuppa warm for up to eight hours.

Fruitbatdancer · 17/09/2018 23:00

I always try to gift for mum! A small token for baby and then depending on the mums preferences full fat coke in bottles, giant galaxy, posh biscuits in a tin, a cake (they’ll have lots of visitors to share with!) one friend I got Thai crackers and sweet chilli sauce! Grin she was thrilled!
