Am I clutching pearls unnecessarily?

Appear to be watching women's wrestling (not on purpose, telly left on while I was working)

There are children, maybe 8-11 ish being shown in the audience

Viper??? Plus size woman in fishnets and leotard has just bodyslammed Ayesha who is also in fishnets and leather

I'm thinking a) incredibly sexualised clothing to take your kids to go watch

And b) wtf if a serious injury happens? I know these things can be staged but how do you stage a plus size woman jumping and landing on stomach of a much slimmer woman?

It's not exactly martial arts where people are respectful is it? (Id happily take my primary school child to judo match etc)

Oysterbabe · 16/09/2018 06:52

You know it's not real right?

actualpuffins · 16/09/2018 06:54

I'm not sure about clutching pearls, but YWNBU to find it tacky rubbish and wonder what the fuck it is doing on your TV.

Donnyduds · 16/09/2018 07:20

I shouldn’t worry about the Kids or Parents if they enjoy watching Wrestling they’re probably Brain dead already 🤪

Pringlesaddict · 16/09/2018 07:22

What a strange thread OP. Firstly if you did want to start an actual plus size bashing thread you'd have had a million takers because fat bashing under the guise of concern about the NHS etc is practically a hobby on MN.

As for "sexualised" clothing let's all pretend with a bit faux naivete that we have absolutely no idea what you're talking about so that actually you're the sexist one for thinking that taking children to watch women "wrestle" in sexy costumes is fine. Like we have no context about women being pushed in to clothes that are uncomfortable because men find them sexy. I'm sure you would all have no problem taking your sons to a Hooters restaurant as there's no such thing as clothing that has been sexualised for the male gaze. That's why male wrestlers traditionally wore fishnets Hmm

It's a bit like when we discuss pink glittery princess clothes and people say "how sexist, boys can be princesses too you know. why do you assume the pink aisle has been set aside for girls?

See also "pole dancing for empowerment".

If people are at all curious about what the OP is talking about please Try a Google Image search: " leather leotard fishnet stockings". As it's traditional gym wear you should have no NSFW issues right? The fact that you are being deliberately obtuse about all context for this clothing with regards to a plus size woman only proves that people don't see plus size women as having a sexuality.

All of these are outfits are exactly the same right?

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/09/2018 07:25

CSIBlonde
I think everyone watched it because it was that or nothing. I wouldn’t choose to watch it as an adult though.

Op it wouldn’t be my choice of viewing. And I’d want to be able to explain it to my dd if she went to see it. I imagine the parents will have done the same.

That says, it’s also better to children to see bodies of all sizes. If it is the fatty squashing the thinny, this for me at a certain level is fat shaming and the clumsy fat stereotype. It would then be a no no for me for that reason rather than the clothes. Clothes are just clothes and to a certain extent should also be normalised.

Loopyloopy · 16/09/2018 07:27

Bha ha ha poor OP, you are copping some unwarranted flack here. Yes, it's sexualised, male and female, but it's all pretty light. The body slamming is all staged, they won't hurt each other.

DeadCertain · 16/09/2018 07:29

I came across a documentary about female wrestling that heavily featured Viper a while ago (iPlayer maybe; can't recall) and she was polite, articulate, hard working and a great role model for others. The outfits are just for entertainment and to create a persona - if the wrestlers didn't have a "character" that people could get behind, no matter their athletic ability, they would be nowhere near as successful.

RyderWhiteSwan · 16/09/2018 07:36

Pringlesaddict I love watching women pole dancing - I'm a straight woman. I admire the skill and grace of it. They make it look effortless but I know damn well it isn't!

Pringlesaddict · 16/09/2018 07:43

I haven't read the entire thread so apologies but has anyone actually said she wasn't any of those things? She's an actress, playing someone called Viper (I apologise if Viper is actually her birthname of course Hmm she could be playing any character but have an entirely different personality. The Op is discussing the character she is playing not who she is as a person.

offtocornwall · 16/09/2018 08:07

No OP, you are not unreasonable in thinking it's a fucking weird day out for your 8-9 yr old child. However as previously mentioned - anyone who wants to go watch this shite is probably brain dead already.

Yes, heavy people falling on people will hurt. You are not being unreasonable however you have asked a question in a topic populated by the professionally offended. It's not a 'matter of a opinion' it's a matter of fucking physics' large dense body mass falling on someone will hurt.

A 'role model' for children is not someone who has 'embraced' being morbidly obese. It's a fucking horrendous life. The health implications are horrific, The social implications are devastating. The physical limitations once into your 30s and 40s (and your joints have paid the price of carrying excess weight for a couple of decades. ) turn your body into that of someone 30 yrs older. I can only assume that all those 'right on' idiots who are impressed by large women showing others how to live with obesity - don't have a fucking clue what it's like to be morbidly obese and certainly haven't lived with the consequences. Or you wouldn't spout such utter gobshite.

The only role model for morbid obesity is not to be.

Yes OP. It is deliberate sexualised clothing. Don't know where this lot of politically correct loons come from but in my five decades I've yet to ever see a single woman at a gym, exercise, yoga or Pilates class wearing a leather /leopard print leotard and fishnets. It's of course deliberately sexualised . This is a commercial 'entertainment ' and again, the rather desperate politically correct - are being deliberately obtuse. Sex sells.

However that all said, there are people who bizarrely enjoy this nonsense. Just turn it off you don't need it in your head.

BettyCrook · 16/09/2018 08:09

I saw it last night.

I don't see anything sexual with fishnets?!
I actually think that being hit by someone who is muscular is more painful than body fat... fat is squishy and lighter than muscles.. fat usually pads the bones and joints so they aren't as sharp in general..

Also Ayesha went willingly into this so it's not like she didn't know whats in it.

I think that even the men wear Confused outfits as part of the persona.

And I don't think that being plus size yourself op means you are automatically exempt from body shaming or having problems accepting your size and other plus size women or stops you from being critical or bitchy by default.

You are still coming across as having a problem with Viper having the audacity to wear what she wore and do what she does because she does not fit the standard beauty ideals.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/09/2018 08:18

Have you seen what professional runners wear op? You'll faint through lack of oxygen from clutching your jewellry so tight. And oh my goodness! There's children there and these women are held up as role models!
Can the op who said she knew her tell Viper that she is stunning and a fantastic role model for Young women.

MsHopey · 16/09/2018 08:43

I've said myself jumping on someone would bloody hurt

😂 she's not actually jumping on her though!

VickieCherry · 16/09/2018 08:49

You know the men only wear skimpy outfits too? Sometimes just their pants! And they're oiled and fake tanned to make their muscles stand out. And some of them are a lot bigger than others (some might even be described as plus size, if that moniker were ever applied to men). What about the young girls in the audience, will they be damaged by seeing these things?

Professional wrestling is highly choreographed, no-one is landing on someone who can't take it unless something goes badly wrong.

Donnyduds · 16/09/2018 11:52

Well said offtocornwall, couldn’t of put it better myself.

anotherNCmn · 16/09/2018 16:40

Can't understand men or women's wrestling why anyone would take their kids to go see it tbh

It was obviously on late at night as not considered children's tv

I can understand an adult finding it entertaining just can't see how this is in any way family friendly

OP posts:
Lethaldrizzle · 16/09/2018 16:49

Fishnet tights not sexual clothing?! She may be a lovely lass, but role model?! Hmm

RibbonAurora · 16/09/2018 16:50

Seriously OP? Have you never seen pro wrestling before? It's staged and choreographed to the nth degree, no one would survive the falls and hits pro wrestlers take if it weren't. They are highly skilled and trained and know how to minimize the impact on their opponents when there is a weight/size imbalance, knees are drawn up, spines are arched, hips turned to the side, hands slammed onto the canvas to create the crashing noise, what looks like full bodily contact is actually nothing like. As for the costuming, it's that, a costume, part of the show. Not only the women are sexualised so are some of the men with their oiled, fake-tanned six packs and tiny briefs. I took both my DSs to WWE shows when they were little and they weren't a bit corrupted or fazed by the scanty costumes.

RibbonAurora · 16/09/2018 16:53

Oh and meant to add Viper looks bloody sensational in her fishnets - good on her.

RedPanda2 · 16/09/2018 17:00

ThistleAmore Viper is a Queeeen!!!

hobblesma · 16/09/2018 17:04

It was obviously on late at night as not considered children's tv

Or because it's pish and it doesn't get the viewers that other programs get so they don't want to waste a decent slot.

Fatted · 16/09/2018 17:10

Is it your kids watching it?! YABU.

Wrestling is all fake anyway.

iklboo · 16/09/2018 17:11

It was obviously on late at night as not considered children's tv

It's shown at teatime on Saturday evening (4/5pm) and repeated later on.

womanintrousers · 16/09/2018 17:15

You don't know anything about wrestling and YABU.

Wrestling is entertainment and awesome! They are skilled athletes and know exactly what they are doing. And its AWESOME!

Wittow · 16/09/2018 17:28

Isn't it all choreographed panto type stuff?
