Not aibu but my friend. She went to fill up her car and had to wait behind the car using it as expected.Man goes in to pay and doesn't reappear for a fair amount of time, friend is in a hurry. When he does return he's got 3 bags of shopping and a bunch of flowers so my friend goes "Are they for me?" Man says " No they're for my wife" she says "oh I thought they must be for me as an apology seeing as you've done all that shopping whilst I've waited to fill my car up,you should have parked up elsewhere!"
Was she in the right and he was being a CF or was she being unreasonable and he had every right to get whatever shopping he wanted ? I can see both sides tbf

Sirzy, that’s not the case in my local BP petrol station. A second car was definitely able to pump petrol before the first car had paid.

Enidblyton1 · 14/09/2018 17:13

Absolutely, pay at pump would be SO much easier

yesornoworld · 14/09/2018 17:14

The next customer at the pump cannot start dispensing fuel until the previous customer has paid though. It is actually possible that of customer A moves off the pump before paying for their fuel, customer B can pull up to the pump and dispense more fuel which will just be a continuation of customer A’s transaction IYSWIM. I would certainly never vacate a pump before I’d completed my transaction by paying.

Unheard of and very untrue 😂.
Each transaction ends as soon as the hand-pump is placed back. Each transaction is different and reset from 00.00.
Also every petrol station has the ability to allow atleast 2 transactions per pump without payment being made before it needs to reset. Also payment A can be held back, and payment B can be made multiple times. So driver A can walk around the shop at his leisure and there can be multiple B drivers filling up at the same pump and making payments.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 14/09/2018 17:16

I hate it when this happens. It's so selfish! Why ahould everyone have to wait for you? I probably wouldnt say anyrhing but anytime someone comes out with a bag of shopping Im judging them Grin

You can't always just move pump, there's often big queues or someone behind you. Plus you never know how long they're going to be.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 14/09/2018 17:16

Best invention for me has been the BP App! Can’t wait for this to be rolled out across the board 👍

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/09/2018 17:19

Poor guy?

She should have moved if there was another pump free but the man shouldn't have done his shopping while his car was left there.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 14/09/2018 17:19

I agree they can move and then pay, I've definitely done this before and it's not been a problem, if I need the loo whatever. Move my car, park, pay and then go to the loo. I do this when with my mum as she is disabled so we fill up, then I drop her off by the door, pull up a little out the way then she has to walk less. I have never had a problem with this, ever. And it means we can both go in and she can take her time and she's not worried about rushing.

Lweji · 14/09/2018 17:33

If we are talking CFs at pumps, though, I give you the time I filled up, got my purse from the back seat of my car, went to pay, and in front of me was this woman trying to pay for the car behind me. Someone mentioned something about (my) car needing to move, so that the car she was paying for could fill up. So, right from behind her, I stepped forward to say that I'd move as soon as she let me pay. Grin

Skyejuly · 14/09/2018 17:34

I sometimes do a shop in there too!

EmmaC78 · 14/09/2018 17:39

I think he was selfish. If you are buying more than a couple of items you should move your car first. I do this all the time and have never had an attendant run out and tell me not too. Surely that is what the spaces in front of the shop are for!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 14/09/2018 17:55

Each transaction ends as soon as the hand-pump is placed back. Each transaction is different and reset from 00.00.

Interesting...I wonder how I managed to fill my car replace the pump while I unscrewed the lid on my petrol can and then fill that too all in one transaction..........

Plus there is the previous poster who said how they had moved away from the pump and it caused problems because the person behind them ended up,paying for their fuel too.....

Rhondacross · 14/09/2018 17:58

Yes, I fill up, put the hand pump back, then fill up a petrol can. So clearly another driver could add to my bill if I moved my car before paying. Maybe I'm too nice, but if I'm wizzing through picking up a pint I'll pay for that and the fuel together. If I'm planning to browse ready meals and buy some stuff I pay, go back and move my car, then return to shop. Why wouldn't you?

ChipsAndKetchup · 14/09/2018 17:59

@yesornoworld do you realise you are talking utter nonsense?

I'll just add some passive aggressive 😂😂😂😂 too.

bungaloid · 14/09/2018 18:06

I tried to be helpful once and move from the pump to a parking space about 10 metres away so someone else could use the pump. By the time I'd got a coffee inside and got to the counter the salesperson was panicking and the manager was calling the police due to non-payment. So I haven't been helpful since.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/09/2018 18:11

Yes, Bungaloid, this is why I don't move.

safariboot · 14/09/2018 18:13

With her smart-alec remark your friend was a bit of an arsehole.

And if there's a car at the pump and you're waiting too close to be able to pull out and go to a different pump then that's your own damn fault.

irishe · 14/09/2018 18:36

Last week, I filled up at local Sainsbury’s petrol with a convenience store attached. I didn’t move the car. I noticed as I got out of the car a motorcyclist pull up behind me. I quicky grabbed couple of items and went to the queue to pay. Motorcyclist then came and queued behind me, so I realised he had been able to fill up from the same pump before I paid. When I got to the cashier, she asked which payment was mine?
The unleaded or unleaded premium and stated the amount.

It did make me think that the system could be abused quite easily as the cashier had no way of knowing which payment was mine and was relying on me telling her. Up till that point I hadn’t realised that could happen.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 18:50

I love your friend, OP. I wish I had the guts to do that rather than smoulder with silent rage.

Annebronte · 14/09/2018 18:55

You’re meant to pull forward if you want to shop. Most garages attached to Tesco etc have signs asking you to do so. The pump will still work for the next person. They can ‘store’ a couple of pending transactions before they stop working. Your friend was correct, if a bit rude.

chrisinthesun · 14/09/2018 19:36

YANBU. The guy should have moved!

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2018 19:45

There's three garages around here where there are no spaces to pull into after filling up so that wouldn't work.

Sometimes in life you have to wait a bit for stuff. No need for sarky comments or rudeness.

QueenOfMyWorld · 14/09/2018 19:47

It was definitely a friend,I don't drive.I wasn't in the car she told me this when we met up i assumed the other pumps were busy too

RibbonAurora · 14/09/2018 19:57

It's a really frustrating procedure for all involved if you ask me. Hard to say who's unreasonable though there's never a need for snark like OP's friend. Im also in the USA, we pay at pump or inside before gas can be pumped then, if we want to shop in the minimart, after pumping gas we move the car into a parking spot and shop. Simple, logical. Avoids scenarios like this one.

Rightsaidmabel · 14/09/2018 19:58

No she could not OF done any thing! OF means "belonging to,or associated with" something. eg The hair of the dog.
Use HAVE in this context, which is is part of the verb "do".It means that something was possible in the past, or you had the ability to do something in the past, but that you didn't do it. e.g. Have done my hair.

"Could've" is being heard as "could of" .

've is an abbreviation of HAVE.The comma replaces the letters 'ha'. We hear the "'ve" as "of".
We don't read enough, and so don't see words on the page.

Bluelady · 14/09/2018 20:01

Bloody hell, Mabel. Calm down, dear, you'll have a fit.

PS I'm a grammar Nazi too 😉
