Non vanity size jeans

Please can you help?
Aftee far too long of denial about my weight I am finally exercising.

As a motivator I want to purchase some jeans.

Where can I get jeans that truly reflect my size?

I don't want size 16s that stretch to fit my size 20 body. I want size 18s that mean I am a size 18.

And i don't want them to be expensive because i want to be in a size 16 relatively quickly after that.

Thank you.

Tell me if you find out!

I've slimmed from an 18 to a 14 and desperately need new jeans, but have no idea how to go about it. I've taken my size 16s in at the back seam as a temporary measure, but the thighs are still too large.

Medea13 · 13/09/2018 15:47

finding jeans that fit is difficult for everybody, and they're using their existing body. I think you're going to have a hard time finding jeans to fit an imaginary body you don't yet possess.

Why not just look up what the "official" waist and hip measurements of a "true" size 18 are, and then make a note of when your measurements reach that level -- and then buy whatever jeans you find that fit, regardless of whether the label says 20 or 18 or 14 or whatever?

Cornettoninja · 13/09/2018 15:48

You could measure your waist and get men’s jeans?

I wish women’s clothes were catalogued in inches.

LyndorCake · 13/09/2018 15:49

I always buy NewLook jeans. They are cheap, don't last a year so have no issue chucking them when they've worn out. I loved them when I went through my weight loss, and now that I've gained weight again. Don't feel guilty when I chuck them.

As I've always bought them, I think the size is a fair reflection. Perhaps they aren't but I feel they are for me. I never buy the spray on jeans, always the slim fit rather than skinny.

RiojaHaze · 13/09/2018 15:52

Agree that New Look is a good reflection of size, as is Topshop and River Island IMO.

Next and Dorothy Perkins both vanity size.

angieloumc · 13/09/2018 15:53

I quite like Dorothy Perkins jeans, I get the Frankie style, they're about £22 so very inexpensive.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 13/09/2018 15:54

I buy tesco F&F jeans, bought some lovely black work ones last weekend. Actually, tesco is the only place I find true to size for jeans, trousers on the other hand, I'm anything from 14-18 there (I'm a 16).

thecatsthecats · 13/09/2018 15:57

I would forget finding the true size, and buy two pairs (three if you can) of cheap jeans in exactly the same style, but different sizes.

My 18s didn't fit, then I could just do them up, then I could do them up and sit down (but not eat a big meal), now I can pull them down easily without unbuttoning them and they're beginning to look baggy where they should be fitted.

Last time I checked the 16s were an inch off doing up - I'm hoping for the 'does up but can't breathe' stage next time I try!

I'm planning to keep one size up once I've reached my goal weight. If I ever feel like they're a better fit than my target size, I'll know I need to push for loss!

BillywigSting · 13/09/2018 15:57

Agree with new look being good for reasonably accurate sizing.

They have some jeans which don't stretch too, boyfriend jeans I think and are inexpensive.

They last more than a year if they're not being worn every day too

MetalMidget · 13/09/2018 16:01

Whenever I go jeans shopping, I become convinced that I'm not human shaped. Size 14 waist, 16 hips and 18 thighs. Obviously I have to go for ones that can accommodate the heftiest parts, so I end up with loads of excess fabric around my stomach and waist.

bluetrampolines · 13/09/2018 16:14

Thank you. I'm surprised you all say New Look. What about Marks and Spencers? They were on the mumsnet recommendations email.

Also, I'm out of the fashion loop. Are jeggings acceptable or is that cheating?

FuzzyCustard · 13/09/2018 16:19

Part of my problem is that I don't believe I am a size 14. I keep getting 16s and being surprised they are too big, but my brain refuses to allow me to trust that a 14 might actually fit. Ah, the perils of dieting.

(Also I live far from shops, so I have to buy most stuff online, which doesn't help)

My Joe Brown's jeans seem pretty good size-wise, but sadly the style I want (indigo, straight leg, not low rise) doesn't appear to be available.

thecatsthecats · 13/09/2018 16:22

Jeggings are fine as long as 1) they're new (not stretched out) and 2) you do the size thing I suggested above.

I think the number is not the issue, but the progress!

argumentativefeminist · 13/09/2018 16:24

Primark jeans are the best for plus size, I reckon. The sizes are what they are, I'm a 20 in absolutely all of their stuff, and it's consistent across the range of jean styles. Obviously say, a denim bootcut is a little tighter than the super stretch jeggings, but in general you know what you're getting. The "super stretch skinnys" are so comfy, they're practically jeggings but just look a little smarter.

bluetrampolines · 13/09/2018 16:25

Thanks thecats.
I like that idea. It's frustrating.

Just buy jeans in a smaller size ??

Why does it matter what the label says ? If you find size 18 jeans fit you and you want to be smaller then get size 16 and then 14 etc

What’s with the ‘vanity sizing’drama?

bluetrampolines · 13/09/2018 16:27

Because it gives you a false sense of where you are at.

OP posts:
drquin · 13/09/2018 16:31

Or does it?
Every shop tends to fit us differently ..... otherwise you wouldn't have got so many different suggestions of where's good for fit. Even within one brand, you'll get different fits.

Just go for what fits YOU, what looks good etc.

combatbarbie · 13/09/2018 16:33

New look here! Def not H&M, I am a 10/12 And had to get a 14!! But I really liked the style so just cut the tag out once home.

Holymosquito · 13/09/2018 16:35

Buy jeans with a lot of stretch and then ‘accidentally’ put them in a hot tumble dryer. Then you can have jeans that shrink with you. (Thanks to DH for introducing me to this method - does pose a bit of a problem with length though...)

UnderHerEye · 13/09/2018 16:35

Because it gives you a false sense of where you are at

Why? Sorry OP I’m not meaning to be chippy, i just don’t get why you are stuck on wanting to be in size 16 jeans but only if they are a certain size 16, why not just aim for the size 14 if you think the 16s are generous?

Or weigh yourself to measure any weight loss?

Clothes sizes these days aren’t a great indicator of anything, I have sizes ranging from 12-20!

slowrun · 13/09/2018 16:36

I keep a selected selection of old clothes to track my progress. I'm not actually sure the sizes have really changed in the last 10 years tbh. I can fasten the next size down, (in 10 year old clothes) from where I am now but they are a touch tight to be comfortable.

thecatneuterer · 13/09/2018 16:47

@Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 Sorry but Tesco definitely vanity size jeans. I'm a 6 in Tesco jeans. Always. (And I'm really not a 6). A couple of years ago I was an 8 (and I haven't lost weight). Even H&M are vanity sizing now. And now Sainsbury have followed suit, but unlike Tesco don't go down to a 6, I can't buy jeans/trousers there.

I'm not sure which places now don't vanity size. Maybe Top Shop?

thecatneuterer · 13/09/2018 16:49

I totally agree though that it really doesn't matter what the label says. Just use old clothes to track progess (or the scales, or the mirror ...).

starryeyed19 · 13/09/2018 17:09

I was under the impression that everyone vanity sized.

Would keeping a log of your measurements work, OP? If this is just about tracking weight loss?
