Non vanity size jeans

Please can you help?
Aftee far too long of denial about my weight I am finally exercising.

As a motivator I want to purchase some jeans.

Where can I get jeans that truly reflect my size?

I don't want size 16s that stretch to fit my size 20 body. I want size 18s that mean I am a size 18.

And i don't want them to be expensive because i want to be in a size 16 relatively quickly after that.

Thank you.

I genuinely don't get this, although I know lots of women who would identify with it so I kind of understand. The mirror, the scales and bmi charts tell me that despite my best efforts I'm still sadly obese. No amount of jeans in my size but with a no.10 or 12 randomly printed on the label would change my perception of myself.

Top shop are normally pretty accurate! Bloody expensive these days though.

argumentativefeminist · 13/09/2018 17:20

Top Shop really don't cater for size 18 even though they pretend they do. On the website, the only "jeans" in a size 18 are a pink corduroy matching jeans and top set for.... £110. 🙄

timetodothis · 13/09/2018 17:26

What about Marks and Spencers? They were on the mumsnet recommendations email.

Stay away from M & S jeans. They put tons of elastic/stretchy material in them now. Vanity sizing?
So you start off in the morning wearing a size 12 and by mid afternoon they've stretched to a 16 Angry

I wish they'd bring back normal jeans in a normal material. The old fashioned kind wherr you had to shoe horn them on, but once on, they looked amazing and didn't bag or stretch.

argumentativefeminist · 13/09/2018 17:27

Actually there are a few styles in waist 36 which they class as an 18, maybe my inner hatred of Topshop was too hasty 😂

OP, if you're gonna buy the 18 as an indicator of you losing weight when you fit in them, and then the same with a 16 after that, I reckon getting two pairs of the same style from somewhere that you shop quite regularly is the best option, then it'll hopefully be easier for you to replace some of your other clothes with roughly consistent sizing from the same place when you're slimmer.

M&S

GorgonLondon · 13/09/2018 17:32

Why on earth would you think an arbitrary number would be more 'truthful' than just working out your bmi and your target bmi?

What's your height, current weight and target weight?

thedevilinablackdress · 13/09/2018 17:34

Clothes sizes are a pretty rubbish way if tracking your weight/size. There's very little consistency between shops/brands and even in the same one.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/09/2018 17:37

...and there's no standard measure of women's sizes anyway AFAIK

UpstartCrow · 13/09/2018 17:37

I like the Primark ones for fit, but struggle to find decent jeans that are actually made out of denim. I used to wear branded vintage jeans and got years of wear from them.
In Asda, men can buy budget Smart Price denim jeans for around £8, but they are not available in womens sizes.

GorgonLondon · 13/09/2018 17:38

@thecatneuterer I have the same issue. I have to buy a 6 in oasis, warehouse and sometimes h&m.

I'm tall and muscular and definitely not a real size 6.

PattiStanger · 13/09/2018 17:43

Another one agreeing with the fact that it doesn't matter, if your jeans start feeling too big then you've lost weight or toned up and vice versa.

Why do you need the size to be accurate, what even is that?

LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 17:43

“You could measure your waist and get men’s jeans?”

That only works for apple shapes. My hips are 12” bigger than my waist. I wouldn’t be able to get men’s jeans over my hips if I went by waist size.

“I wish women’s clothes were catalogued in inches.”

So do I but they need to be by hip size as well as waist size.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 13/09/2018 17:46

M&S jeans are massive! I am the fat end of a 14 and size 14 jeans from M&S easily pull off without undoing, even when fresh from the wash.

MorrisZapp · 13/09/2018 17:48

Top Shop sizes are tiny.

BusterTheBulldog · 13/09/2018 22:51

I think top shop are the most accurate size wise. Also seem to be consistent.

thedevilinablackdress · 14/09/2018 07:40

Well, if anyone has a copy of the British Standard BS3666 we can check which, if any of the shops mentioned complies with standard sizing...?

Thelastredwinegum · 14/09/2018 07:47

I just stick to Levi now. Sizes are in " not 16, 18 etc
