AIBU to ask which countries/cities were the best or worst you have visited and why?

OP posts:
LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 09:26

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Dublin underwhelming. I can't really put my finger on it, but I know I was shocked at the level of homelessness and begging there - and this was 30 years ago!

ChangerChangerson · 13/09/2018 09:28

Best - Thailand. The people, he scenery, the food are all amazing.

Worst - Luxemburg. There is NOTHING to do there.

Witchofzog · 13/09/2018 09:29

I love New York, Vilnius, all of Greece, Alanya in Turkey, Lincoln, Leeds and bizarrely Newark (don't think that's a city though)

I hated Egypt. You wouldn't pay me to go back. The hassle I got off the locals and much more than others as I was a " single unmarried mother". Never again

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 13/09/2018 09:30

Best place: camping in the Ural mountains. So, so beautiful. Russian people are a lot of fun and certainly like a drink!
Worst place: The "Bostel" chalets in Amsterdam Bos (like a big urban park). We were stopping in Amsterdam after visiting Efteling (which is magical) and I thought the Bos would be more child friendly than the city. In fact the park was flat and boring (I know, I know.. Holland!), the accommodation was dirty and the proprietor was a Basil Fawlty character.

MissusGeneHunt · 13/09/2018 09:32

Best = Australia (specifically Melbourne), Florence, Hamburg, anywhere in France especially the Pyrenees.
Worst = Tunisia (hassle etc) and South Africa (poverty / constantly uneasy).

Sad re SA as the landscape, widlife and some of the people I met were lovely. Wouldn't go back though.

thisisannc · 13/09/2018 09:38

We just found Dublin a bit boring (I know, I'm probably going to be told there are no boring places, only boring people, etc.) and struggled to find much of interest to do. I'm usually very happy just wandering around cities even if I don't have much on the itinerary, but I didn't find Dublin charming/pretty enough to enjoy wandering around.

However, the weather was relentlessly bad and we got unlucky with a couple of very underwhelming restaurants we chose. Also there was a very surly member of staff in our hotel who we kept encountering and who made us feel quite unwelcome. I imagine if we'd got better weather and stayed in a different hotel, we might have a more positive overall view of the city.

Hoppinggreen · 13/09/2018 09:40

Southern Germany is great

LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 09:40

I think that was why we didn't find dublin that interesting Thisis.
Our hotel was disappointing as well. The public rooms were very grand and had recently been decorated, but the bedrooms were shabby and in need of updating.

SpeedbirdFoxtrot · 13/09/2018 09:42

Best: Austria, Japan, Sweden, and South Africa

Worst: UAE (Dubai). I just couldn’t enjoy it. It’s underwhelming, too hot, and colourless.

DragonScales · 13/09/2018 09:45

Best; Mexico, Thailand, Venice (in fact all of italy) , Holland , Cambodia

Worst Tunisia, Cape Verde, Paris

Asterado · 13/09/2018 09:48

I love
South Africa (away from the big game parks)
Lesotho which just took my breath away
Italy
France

I have been to Germany a lot and never enjoy it. Not even at Christmas.
I like Prague but anywhere outside the immediate centre of Prague I find dull.
Cape Verde served a purpose but was boring as fuck. Probably brilliant of you love AI beach holidays, I however get bored easily!

rosesandcashmere · 13/09/2018 09:50

Best - Cape Town, beautiful, beautiful people amazing place.
Worst - Munich - soulless!

Davros · 13/09/2018 09:51

Love:
Austria, especially Salzburg and lakes
Madrid
USA, especially NY
Blakeney (north Norfolk)

Dislike:
Dublin
Paris

ghostyslovesheets · 13/09/2018 09:51

yes Bavaria is one of my very fave places - beautiful place

I also found Dublin dull and expensive - not fun

I love France as well

My favourite city is Liverpool - because it's the best place in the world !

SuckOnTHATRyan · 13/09/2018 09:53

My favourite city to visit is probably Valencia. I also love Paris, but I lived there, so wasn’t a tourist. I think it’s less lovely if you get caught in the numerous tourist traps there.

Least favourite would either be Lima or Tangiers. Tangiers I definitely wouldn’t go without my husband and I hate saying that.

Bluelady · 13/09/2018 09:54

Italy, especially Florence but only out of season.

adoggymama · 13/09/2018 09:56

I haven't been to many places but these are mine:
Best: Barcelona/Paris or London.
Worst: Alicante

BunsOfAnarchy · 13/09/2018 09:57

Best -
India - Delhi, Jaipur, Amritsar
Thailand - Bangkok, Hua Hin
Italy - Rome, Venice, Verona
Swizerland - Geneva, La Chaud de Fonds
Belgium - Brussels, Bruges, Gent, Oostende
Cyprus - Pissouri
UAE - Ras Al Khaimah
Canada - Toronto, Sauble
USA - NYC, NJ

Worst
never been anywhere i didnt like. But i always research before going and find things id like to see and try out.

Grreat · 13/09/2018 09:57

Best-
Sweden; Stockholm. The archipelago sailing in to the city is immensely beautiful. I felt so safe and the architecture is fab. Just a wonderful place to live and very homely.

Iceland (rural)- very beautiful natural wonders and very friendly people.

Worst
Reykjavik. Nothing much to do there at all.

Estonia- Can't put my finger on it but as someone else said, I wouldn't rush back

BunsOfAnarchy · 13/09/2018 09:58

Wait!

I wouldnt say i hate Paris but i didnt enjoy as much as i thought i would. Id go back to give it another shot though

Rezie · 13/09/2018 09:58

Worst: Belgium. It was so boring. Sure, the town's like Bruges were pretty but I just couldn't be entertained and had to take day trips to other boring cities. Not too fussed with Germany either.

Best: Norway. Was never too fussed with visiting there but then went to visit a friend and it was amazing. I was also very pleasantly surprised with Scotland. I also really like Hong Kong.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 13/09/2018 10:01

Oh how could I forget Scotland! I love Edinburgh and Glasgow. So lovely. Not mad on Aberdeen, though we also lived there and had to endure one of the coldest winters they’d had for a while. Also lived in Edinburgh for two years in a cardboard box flat with no central heating; Aberdeen for one year with great central heating, beautiful flat and a gas fire was worse!

LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 10:01

Hong Kong was brilliant. We felt so safe there as well. I found out afterwards that the Triad rely on income from tourism, so the irony is that a gang of ciminals make it safe for tourists!

SuckOnTHATRyan · 13/09/2018 10:04

lonicera

I’ve heard similar about NI; it used to be quite safe for day to day activities as the provos kept criminals in line. A teenager attacked and killed a pensioner in my home town. Little cunt was off his face on booze and blues (alcohol and Valium), asked an old man for a cigarette and beat him to death when he didn’t have one. I obviously shouldn’t approve of anything the provos did but when he was told to leave the country after he’d served his pitifully short sentence or he would be shot, I have to say that part of me thought “good”. Sorry - dark detail there!
