AIBU to ask which countries/cities were the best or worst you have visited and why?

OP posts:

Disneyland Paris is really crap. Don't bother.

We quite liked Dublin. We found a great restaurant where they did IRish stew and people played fiddles. We stayed in Ireland for a week and know its a cliche but found the people just so so lovely and helpful unlike inland Spain where everyone seemed very mean.

PierreBezukov · 14/09/2018 17:43

buttermilk, no it wasn't. It was on the way up to the Castle. My kids quite enjoyed it and there was a good view of Edinburgh from the top. That's all I'll say Wink

MajorBumsore · 14/09/2018 17:50

Worst-France without a doubt. Have had several grim holidays there with accompanying poor food, poor manners and poor weather.

Best-It’s a toss up between The Osa peninsula in Costa Rica for its stunning wildlife and La Paz in Bolivia which is just so different and interesting. Loved the food in both too.

Iamclearlyamug · 14/09/2018 19:15

I've only ever been to one other country and I'm overly biased but I love Turkey - the first 2 times I went I was a youngish (late 20s) solo female traveller and NEVER had any of the bother that previous posters have talked about.

I'm there 5 times a year - in fact I only got back on Wednesday from my 4th trip in 2018 so far, beautiful weather, fantastic food, friendly people...oh and my future husband is always a draw too 😂😂

the only part I hate is the driving - they are literally all psychos! red lights mean stop, unless u don't want to in which case go anyway. no right turn signs mean don't turn right, unless u want to turn right in which case do it anyway 🙈🙈 don't fancy using your indicators? no problem just use the horn instead

I wouldn't drive there if u paid me 😂😂

boomboo · 14/09/2018 20:10

Best- Thailand just beautiful and friendly people
Boston- Historical, great food and plenty to do
Berlin- Exciting, friendly, clean and safe

Worst- Morocco- unfriendly got pickpocketed, spat at and felt v.unsafe especially at night

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 14/09/2018 20:23

Best - India
Worst - Scotland

Penguinsnpandas · 14/09/2018 20:25

That's very like how my Italian friend described Italian driving Iam.

Red lights are optional, pedestrian areas are optional, basically all traffic signs are optional and no one enforces anything. She said to cross a road as pedestrian do not use a crossing and assume cars will stop, just cross anywhere glare at the cars and look determined to cross. 😂 We were parked and a car crashed into us there, seemed to be optional whether you waited to enter a parking space for the car there to leave 😱 Still at least car hire company didn't give a 🐒🐵

Love

Berlin - so wacky and vibrant
Guatemala (the country not the city) - amazing culture, scenery and people
New York City - well, it's NY!
London - it's much like NYC
Switzerland - gorgeous
Greek islands - swimming in the crystal clear waters and the delicious food

Hate

All Latin American Capital Cities - crime is rife, so scary
Spain - don't know why, but find it dull

Tobebythesea · 14/09/2018 20:41

Best places: New Zealand, Iceland, Seville, Krakow, New York, Edinburgh, The Gower, Maldives, The Galápagos Islands, Bahamas, Mauritius, Shanghai, Hawaii

Worst: Sri Lanka, Brussels, Naples, Tijuana, Hollywood

BonnieF · 14/09/2018 21:19

Good : Spain. The northern part, including the Basque Country. Lovely scenery, great cities, fantastic beaches, amazing food & wine culture, very few British tourists, and those who are there tend to be ‘Espanophiles’.

Bad : Spain. The Costas. Overcrowded, overdeveloped and far, far too many chavvy British tourists who wouldn’t dream of eating Spanish food unless it’s called paella.

Writersblock2 · 14/09/2018 21:41

Favourite: anywhere in Italy, but particularly Rome. 💖

Haven’t found a place I’ve hated yet, but I’m sure eventually I will.

itssquidstella · 14/09/2018 21:49

I found Brussels dull but loved Bruges.

Favourite places: Bocas Del Toro in Panama, Alcúdia in Mallorca, Florence, Budapest.

Costa Rica and Nicaragua we're both incredible places to visit - I'm so glad I was able to travel in Nicaragua before the political situation deteriorated.

I haven't really hated anywhere I've visited, to be honest - even the places which have been difficult to travel in or depressing because of the poverty levels (Uganda springs to mind) were still fascinating and eye-opening experiences.

I wouldn't go back to Lille, Bilbao or Brussels, though.

itssquidstella · 14/09/2018 22:00

@VinoISVeritas I loved Montevideo and Mendoza! The vineyards around Mendoza are so beautiful 😍

shins · 14/09/2018 22:00

Lived in Dublin since the late 80s I agree it's a bit of a shithole. I don't want to sound like some kind of folk balladeer but it's lost a lot of its charm since the rush of money and cosmopolitanism and sophistication hit from the late 90s onwards. The gap between rich and poor has widened, there is so much drug use and dysfunction on view, and it's no longer the slow moving shabby city where you'd have interesting conversations with strangers. Feels like the worst of both worlds sometimes, with the frantic pace of bigger cities but without the world class sights and culture and amenities.

Lucyccfc · 14/09/2018 22:12

Best for me:

Chicago - clean and friendly
Tallin - old town so chilled in the summer
Rio - amazing

Worst:

Moscow - dull, grey and full of rude people
New York - busy, loud and dirty
Albania - shithole

VinoISVeritas · 14/09/2018 22:51

@itssquidstella

They really are. Beautiful part of the world.
Patagonia also absolutely up there!

Amanduh · 14/09/2018 23:04

Love : New Zealand, Marbella, Sorrento, London, NY, Maldives, Ibiza, Vegas, Greece
Dislike: Bangkok, Delhi, Paris, Hong Kong, Sydney, North Wales

linkylink · 14/09/2018 23:24

Countries or cities?

Moorea in French Polynesia was the most beautiful place I’ve visited. I like America, France & think England is pretty great plus London is the best city in the world imo.

Only been to 4 places in Spain but don’t really rate it, no real reason just prefer other European countries.

YoloSwaggins · 14/09/2018 23:40

Best - China, Russia, SPAIN is just lovely, Marrakech was fun

Worst - Holland, Denmark, Norway. No offense but I just find Scandinavia flat and boring as shit. Sorry!

tigercub50 · 14/09/2018 23:55

Best - South Africa
Switzerland
California
Ring of Kerry in Southern Ireland
Worst - Not really been anywhere awful but I was disappointed with Florence as it’s not looked after eg graffiti on all the beautiful old buildings etc. And Venice was very smelly but I definitely want to go back.

tobee · 15/09/2018 00:04

Love New York (not very original of me) and Barbados.

Worse Madeira - actually a beautiful place but the weather was terrible and rained all the time, we were at fault for not realising. But it was full of boring, middle aged, middle class British people not talking to each other. (We were mid 20s, so again we should have researched) . The food was dull - like Spanish but no chilli, same menu at all restaurants.

tobee · 15/09/2018 00:05

Sorry two of those aren't countries.

linkylink · 15/09/2018 05:46

Glad to read so much positivity for Budapest & Iceland as planning to visit both in the next few months.

Agree with some of the Dublin points, my parents are Irish & all my extended family still live in Ireland - the majority in Dublin & my dad moved back there years ago. It’s just a bit meh, not pretty, few sights. I think it’s best feature is it’s social side, but not the Temple Bar style nightlife! I agree with a previous poster about the success of the Celtic Tiger which has taken away some charm & I find some of the people a bit nouveau (incl some family members).

Juanbablo · 15/09/2018 05:50

Loved: Vancouver Island, Canada. Orlando, USA.

Hated:Marmaris, Turkey.

hadenough · 15/09/2018 05:53

Best -- Brazil, Spain (the real Spain, anyway.) As others have said Northern Spain is amazing.

Worst - Portugal. Never been so glad to leave a country.
