I just have got to.
How did you do it?

I've tried vaping, hypnotherapy, patches, gum, champix, willpower, doing it for others, doing it for myself.

30 years now of smoking.

I'm baffled as I don't want to smoke but continue. Doesn't matter if I'm stressed or not. I just do it.

Allan Carr book?

Haffiana · 10/09/2018 22:58

Alan Carr method. It just works - no will power required.

Marie0 · 10/09/2018 22:58

Have you read the Allen Carr books about stopping? Made sense to me - physical withdrawal from nicotine is minimal - the reason people still smoke is mental- they think it benefits them in some way - give it a go x

buttermilkwaffles · 10/09/2018 22:59

Or Allen Carr even :)

Marie0 · 10/09/2018 22:59

Lol we all thought about the same thing at the same time - worked for all of us then - that’s got to be good 😀

buttermilkwaffles · 10/09/2018 23:01

Was a long time ago and I was very sceptical that a book would work as I am normally averse to "self-help" books, but it did.

hollieberrie · 10/09/2018 23:02

I just cut down and down and down. From 15 a day to 14 to 13 etc right down to 1 a day. Then 1 every other day. And then I just stopped.

It was easy in the end, because I really really wanted to stop - mainly due to the cost and feeling embarrased / paranoid about the smell of smoke. Good luck OP, whatever way you choose you you can do it.

Marie0 · 10/09/2018 23:02

He he I was the only one with the correct spelling- that’s got to be a first!

shelikespinacalada · 10/09/2018 23:03

Straight to Amazon then.

Really. It worked for you all?
Why?

OP posts:
Marie0 · 10/09/2018 23:04

Hollieberry - I’m afraid Allen Carr would not approve of the cutting down - that makes your cigarettes more special!

Glad you got there tho 😀

Badwifey · 10/09/2018 23:04

As others have said the Alan Carr book is a good place to start.

I'm 5 years off them. I gave them up when I was pregnant and just never went back on them.

I still don't consider myself a non smoker though. I remind myself all the time that one puff and I will be back smoking 20 a day and it has kept me off them.

So for me it was just will power but it's NEVER giving in and having a puff. It's reminding myself that it's a very easy thing to throw away... and yes I do still get the odd craving 5 years later.

I hope you do it. Best of luck.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 10/09/2018 23:04

Bloody hell op!
I was a massive smoker. Nothing better than a fag with a drink or at the end of a meal, or when you’re sad, or when you’re happy, or when you get up in the morning, or when you can’t sleep , or when you’re stressed, when you’ve had bad news, when you’ve had good news etc etc etc
You haven’t tried hard enough.
You probably smell.
Have more wrinkles than necessary.
Cough.
Piss yourself when you cough.
Spend a fortune on something that will ultimately kill you.
Having a fag in your 20’s in a club with your mates, staying slim cos it destroys your appetite is one thing.
20 yrs later it ain’t so glam.
Nicorette did it for me.
But you REALLY have to WANT to stop, there’s no magic wand

Marie0 · 10/09/2018 23:04

Do it - yes it works and immediately after you’ve finished the book - the secret is to read up until the end 👍🏻😀

berninisbeloved · 10/09/2018 23:05

I kept pack of cigarettes in the kitchen and told myself that if I am desperate I can have maybe 1/2 of cigarette but I will smoke no more than that because I am now non smoker. It sounds crazy but it worked. I had to avoid certain situations and people. Friend I always had coffee and cigarette with. Speaking to my mother on the phone - must have cigarette with that. If you never smoke outside - be outside as much as you can. You cannot cut down, smoke weaker brand or vap, you just stop now and don’t hate yourself if you smoke half a cigarette.

vanillapieandicecream · 10/09/2018 23:06

I am sorry to say it's all down to you.

I was a heavy smoker (20 a day minimum) for 16 years and tried everything.

11 years ago it just clicked. I used patches and this time it worked, because I was determined.

The craving is still there from time to time, but ultimately I won't allow myself.

Good luck.

TheSmallAssassin · 10/09/2018 23:07

I stopped by reading the Allan Carr book too - by the end I was desperate to get the last cigarette smoked and never have to light another one!

UpstartCrow · 10/09/2018 23:09

Allen Carr worked for me as well.
Dont try to cut down, smoke as often as you want. Read the book up to the last chapter. Then read it again.
You'll know when you are ready. Then read the last chapter. Then you just stop, with the odd twinge. You wont need substitutes or willpower.

TheSmallAssassin · 10/09/2018 23:10

I spelt his name wrong too Blush

Marie0 · 10/09/2018 23:11

It works because it analyses the reason why you think you smoke - the reasons people come up with obviously include things like stress, habit, boredom etc

The book makes you realise that smoking doesn’t actually make you feel any less stressed or bored or whatever- you just feel ‘relieved’ for the few minutes when you smoke s cigarette as soon as you’ve extinguished it all those feelings of why you thought smoking would help you are actually still there - therefore it’s completely pointless smoking in the first place

The only reason anyone continues to smoke is FEAR of not being able to smoke the next cigarette - not because they are particularly enjoying the one they just had

Katkat222 · 10/09/2018 23:12

Get pregnant Grin honestly it was the only way I was ever going to stop. But I did immediately!
Only joking really. It’s probably a bit extreme Wink

Haffiana · 10/09/2018 23:21

I did the Allen Carr (correct spelling this time) course. It takes about 4-5 hours, that is one morning or one afternoon.

You can smoke throughout and in fact are encouraged to do so. and then you walk out and never smoke again. There were about 10 of us in the room. I sat there thinking that it would probably work on everyone else, but not me. But it worked. Cost about £300, and the best £300 I ever spent.

Mariatequila · 10/09/2018 23:24

Another vote for the book 👌 good luck op

kabanner · 10/09/2018 23:35

I had a jam jar full of dog ends and water.
If I wanted a cigarette I took a sniff first. Envy obvs not envy.

Lou573 · 10/09/2018 23:37

I think what worked for me was acknowledging that quitting is really rubbish and it was ok to be miserable about it. I liked cigarettes a lot and really wanted to continue smoking but just got on with it because i knew I had to.

Physically it’s easy, it’s the mental side that’s tough. Acknowledge it will be shitty, you will want a cigarette and sometimes be bloody miserable about it, but just grit your teeth and don’t smoke. Then little by little it gets easier until it’s not so all consuming. Four years in and I’m glad I don’t have to give up my time and health for fags.

Mycatiskillingme · 10/09/2018 23:44

Alan Carr worked for me nothing else did and when I managed a few months off cigarettes before I still craved them, I read Alan Carr and have not smoked since (6-7 years ago) nor have I ever craved one and I went straight from 20 a day for almost 20 years to nothing. I did not find it difficult and did not even have any withdrawals it was like i never started smoking in the first place.
