I just have got to.
How did you do it?

I've tried vaping, hypnotherapy, patches, gum, champix, willpower, doing it for others, doing it for myself.

30 years now of smoking.

I'm baffled as I don't want to smoke but continue. Doesn't matter if I'm stressed or not. I just do it.

You have to want to. Really want to, and no excuses.

You have to stop telling yourself all the things you'll miss, or worrying about things which won't be as good or the same afterwards.

Then it's easy. I promise. The actual nicotine addiction lasts 5 days.

TheDogsMother · 11/09/2018 17:06

You've made a huge first step in actually wanting to quit. I had to stop for five days due to some dental surgery that would potentially fail if I smoked. That was incentive enough then thought I would try and stay off it for day 6 then 7 etc etc. I never said I'd stopped and kept the cigarettes in the drawer in case I really wanted one. One thing that was unexpected was the liberation I felt. No worrying about when I could have the next one, spending time with non smokers, long flights etc etc

Good luck OP, you can do it !

Allen Carr worked for vertically all my family
Got to be worth a try....at the end of the day I think you have to be at the stage that you REALLY want to give up before you stand any chance of kicking the habit

bershetmelon · 11/09/2018 20:14

I quit when I found out I was pregnant. I loved smoking but stopped because I knew I should, thinking it was going to be bloody awful. Honestly it didn't even cross my mind at all after that, no cravings nothing. DD is nearly 8 months old now and I've had one puff on a cigarette (when extremely drunk) and that's it. It's not bothered me at all.

Thingsdogetbetter · 11/09/2018 20:45

I've been vaping for years. Still a nicotine addict, but at least it's an improvement. My lungs are clearer. My skin is clearer. My teeth aren't fuzzy.

My friends who tried to change to vaping and failed seriously underestimated the nicotine level they needed. They'd get low strength vape juice and then because they were still having cravings they smoke fags too. Then they'd decide vaping wasn't working and give up. I'm convinced they didn't really want to stop smoking, just thought they should so set themselves up to fail.

The ones who succeeded, started on the highest strength and stuck to it for a long time before reducing SLOWLY.

My asthma was terrible and I realised how poor my lung function was. So I stopped and now it’s better

Penninepain · 11/09/2018 20:53

I tried everything and was resigned to being a smoker for life, then read on here about Champix.
Ordered it online through Llords pharmacy, then collected from nearest shop.
I took it religiously for a month and could not believe how easy I found it.

Even now I am a little bit shocked that I dont smoke anymore.

I know you said you had tried it, but did you do a full month?

Bunbunbunny · 11/09/2018 20:53

Allen car here as well, love how it challenged my thought process. I signed up to boots scheme you paid a prescription charged and they gave me patches weekly

I'm 10 years smoking free

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/09/2018 20:55

I got a really nasty chest infection . It was so horrible and I knew they were smoking related . I moved to 10 motives e cigs . At that stage I hated smoking and hated
Myself . I was so sick and my chest so bad I thought there is NO way I can smoke again when I get better (which I did eventually )

I very occasionally have a puff and I don’t enjoy them anymore actually - prefer the E cigs

I had myself in the ‘can’t give up ‘ camp too

You have to get really sick !?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/09/2018 20:56

Yes I also managed to stop after a tooth extraction too (albeit for 4 days)

But interesting how different approaches
Work for different people

neverhadanymarblestolose · 11/09/2018 20:59

Did you take champix for the full course? I'd smoked 20 a day for around 10 years, took champix and I gave up smoking with no willpower whatsoever. All I did was take the tablets and I lost interested in smoking after about 2 weeks. Stuck through the whole course to make sure.
I've now been completely smoke free for nearly 9 years now.

snowone · 11/09/2018 21:12

I used the Nicorette quick mist - it was amazing and stopped cravings instantly, the hardest part about stopping was giving up the spray! I've been given up 6 years now and will NEVER go back to it....I'm not sure I could do it again.

PookieDo · 11/09/2018 21:12

I’ve been 3 years but I do vape now

I kind of had to hit a make or break point with my health to really force me to do it sadly

Curious2468 · 11/09/2018 21:26

I just want to say a big well done to all of you! I have watched 2 family members die from smoking related cancer at just turned 60 (literally the only people who get that form are smokers so it was definitely the cigarettes that killed them!)

You deserve a longer life than that, your family deserve to have you around for longer than that!
