To think using months until age 2 makes sense?

Pre child I would have rolled my eyes at anyone who said their child was x amount of months (unless under 1) but actually now I have a 14 month old it makes sense!! A 13 month old & a 22 month old are both 1 but there's so much difference! Today a woman asked how old, said she's 14 months... she went 🙄 So she's 1 & 1/2. She was a mum, so I sort of expected her to get the months thing. Does it annoy you? What do you say? I might just say she was 1 in July! I get asked how old she is about 200 times a week. I mifht just start saying she's 472 days old Grin (or there abouts) to really get a reaction.

One. Just over one. One and a half. Nearly 2. Two.

23 months = sounds like a plonker

cadburyegg · 10/09/2018 21:17

YANBU I agree with you there is a big difference between a 13 month old and a 23 month old.

The silly woman was wrong anyway, 1.5 years is 18 months, not 14!

happymummy12345 · 10/09/2018 21:17

I hate people using months after one. Sorry

Fatted · 10/09/2018 21:20

Yup, we ditched months after one. It was one, not long turned turned one, almost one and a half, one and a half, not long turned one and a half, almost two and then two.

Frankly I kind of stopped counting.

Chelseajunior · 10/09/2018 21:21

What @serbska said! Spot on imo

Beautifulblue · 10/09/2018 21:23

@serbska yeah I agree. At that age I would say she's 2 next month! Agree I'll just be saying she was recently 1 from now on!

That's what I thought when she said it @cadbury Hmm rounded it up a bit there but ooook!

Two kids here....
And I find it’s a first-both issue, really....
With other kids - it’ll be:

  • just over one
  • nearly 1.5
  • nearly 2

And at some point later, the half-year point will stop to matter too.

It doesn’t really matter to anyone (other than the mom) - if the child is 13, 14, or 15 months.
When others ask for the age - they want to know in general, approximately, etc.

Beautifulblue · 10/09/2018 21:25

@happymummy12345 but don't you agree that saying 1 is quite broad in terms of how much they develop in that year? Although tbh the thought of saying 'she's 16 months' makes me feel a bit Hmm I'll be saying 1 & 1/2 at that point I think!!

OP posts:
Hidillyho · 10/09/2018 21:27

Nah, I always said 1 and a bit, 1 and a half etc. Dc is 2.5 so not miles away from being an under 2 and I always had to think about how old a 16 month old was in terms of years.

peanutbutter310 · 10/09/2018 21:30

One. One and a half. Nearly two. Two.

The only time I would use months is when I'm talking to the parent of another one year old. Even then, I'd probably need to work it out quickly in my head!

Nothisispatrick · 10/09/2018 21:30

YANBU, months makes sense when they develop at such a fast rate.

I did see a post earlier today where someone described their six month old as 25 + 1 week. Still haven’t figured that one out Confused

WTFdidwedo · 10/09/2018 21:31

I did months up until 18 months and from then on I've done "2 in November" unless I'm talking in a group of parents with children around the same age, then I may specify in months. Using months over 2 sounds silly, I don't think it's that bad under 2.

Aaaahfuck · 10/09/2018 21:32

I agree there's a massive difference between 13 and 22 months but I think people don't want to have to do a bit of maths to work out how old your kid is. I think saying nearly 2 or just tuned 1 or 1 and a half or even nearly 1 and a half is fine. If they're particularly interested or it's an in depth conversation they could ask when their birthday is or you could say.

Most people are just making conversation and the people asking to compare don't matter!

Figgygal · 10/09/2018 21:33

Ds2 is 2 next month (how has it gone so fast Sad)

I did months until 12 months then like others 1, 1 and a bit, 1 and a half, almost 2 then 2

DieAntword · 10/09/2018 21:34

If someone asks me on the bus I say he’s 2. If I’m talking about development or comparing with others at playgroup I’ll say 26 months because even now he’s developing a lot from month to month.

DappledThings · 10/09/2018 21:38

Days up till 2 weeks.
Weeks up till 3 months
Months up to two years.

That's my rule! Based only on what makes sense to me.

Beautifulblue · 10/09/2018 21:41

Tbh I think I just read the situation wrong. This mum had her son older than my daughter & a girl who was younger. So I thought she might be interested in the exact age (I know I was when DD was younger to see how she would be/what she'd be doing in x amount of months) I knew this annoyed some people, but thought mums with young kids sort of got it! To a stranger on the bus/supermarket I would probably just say, she recently turned 1.

@figgygirl. Doesn't it fly? Don't think I paid much attention to time until I was counting up the months of a little persons life! Maybe that's why 🤷🏼‍♀️

Months until 1.

Then after that as PP's have said, just over 1, one and a half, nearly 2.

I know a woman who gives monthly updates on her DS, at present he's 29 months Hmm No dear, he's 2 and a half.

Beautifulblue · 10/09/2018 21:48

@DiabolicalPuppetmaster yeah see that is just Hmm I try to be understanding with parents & their over sharing of children as we all know how much we love & are proud of our kids but some people just push the limits 😂 29 months ffs, she'll be saying his age in months when his 40!

I have young DC, don't get nearly enough sleep, and have days where feel like I need eyes in the back of my head and an extra four limbs to keep up with everything. Don't make me do maths please Grin

With mine I counted in months until around 10 months then I'd say they were "nearly one" or "they'll be one in ".

Then when they turned one I'd say "they turned one in ".

Then when they got around the 15 months mark I'd say "one and a half".

Then from around 19/20 months onwards "just over one and a half" or "they'll be two in ".

The only people who have ever needed to know it months are the doctor and the Health Visitor and even then they have one of those little date wheel thingies to work it out for themselves.

Fullofthought · 10/09/2018 22:06

My daughter tells me off for saying she's 6.5 she's 6. She understands that she is 6.5 due to months in the year that have passed but says it's daft to refer to it as she's 6 until her next birthday unless I'm going to let her have a party every month then it 6 and then 7.

NataliaOsipova · 10/09/2018 22:08

I did months up until 18 months and from then on I've done "2 in November

I did too - 18 months was the “months” cut off for me. Most clothes use years after 12-18 months as well, if I remember correctly...

BarnabyBungle · 10/09/2018 22:11

Days up till 2 weeks. Weeks up till 3 months. Months up to two years.

Yes, i’m with you in that.

ItsAllAJoke · 10/09/2018 22:13

I remember going shopping for a gift for a friend's baby and seeing an outfit listed as being for 27-30 months. 🙄

I'm a parent now and still roll my eyes at that stupidity and really odd size range too.

mrbob · 10/09/2018 22:16

I was thinking months seems sensible until 2 but that is from a medical point of view where it makes a big difference! Otherwise I guess 1/1.5/nearly 2 would totally be reasonable. Tbh I can’t get bothered about it either way but after 2 it is nutty
