To not put on food at my child birthday party?

Having a party for my eldests birthday next month and have booked a DJ with a 2 hour party package. The party is 2-4. I think stopping for food is such a waste of precious dancing time and the party isn't over a meal time. Am I being unreasonable?

If you have a DJ not doing any entertainments I would think a sit down eating time is even more important that's a really long time to dance for that age group. Maybe have other stuff they can do for the 2 hours?

MysweetAudrina · 10/09/2018 19:29

Do you have food issues?

I would do rice krispie buns, top hats and bowls of Haribo and also have cocktail sausages, crisps and drinks. My kids love making the goodies and setting them out.

It's a birthday party ffs. Be prepared for all the kids asking you non stop where the food Is?

I really can't think of one good reason why you wouldn't serve some sort of food at a party.

Matcha · 10/09/2018 19:29

Grin x-posted with about ten dozen people saying exactly the same.

I await the counter-post from someone bemoaning the greed and entitlement of children today. They should just be glad they're invited to share this special day! It's an invitation, not a summons! Can you really not survive two hours without a jam sandwich and some quavers?

Leeds2 · 10/09/2018 19:31

If it were my DC's party, there would be food!

Have you also checked with the DJ that he doesn't build in a half hour break for food? Most of the entertainers round here seem to do that.

Rezie · 10/09/2018 19:31

by food do you mean actual food or snacks? I've never been to a kids party that had food. But all partied have had snacks. I would do a side table with crisps, candy etc. i don't think real food (pizza, sandwiches) need to be available.

Witchofwisteria · 10/09/2018 19:32

YABU, pizza, sausage rolls, chicken dippers and some crisps will set you back £30 max... bring on the beige food; it's all part of it!

Calphurnia · 10/09/2018 19:33

Ye gods woman! (Or man...)

Either do it properly, or not at all!

Lemontart25 · 10/09/2018 19:33

@Aridane

If that's your idea of a banquet think I'd skip your party too!!! Grin

Airaforce · 10/09/2018 19:33

I suppose you want people to buy your kid a birthday present even though you're not going to host a proper party as such. It's basic manners to provide snacks of description for your guests. Otherwise, you're going to be one of those grabby cf's you read about on mn.

Babysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoodoo · 10/09/2018 19:34

YABU. It would go down in the history of your child’s friend’s/school as a very odd party!

Houmous and veg sticks; slices of pizza; birthday cake - done!

Parisbun · 10/09/2018 19:34

I hope the dj is a proper kids entertainer .
There should be all sorts of participation games with prizes- maybe some karaoke - balloon animals etc. There is no way any kid will dance for 2 hours straight. In my experience it will be 10 minutes max and then straight into flat out running round the space unless they are corralled and diverted by games.
And definitely there should be some food .

ballsdeep · 10/09/2018 19:34

I'd hate this party. What's a party without a cocktail sausage and pink wafer?? I'd be fuming

Babysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoodoo · 10/09/2018 19:34
  • friends not friend’s - wretched phone
Gersemi · 10/09/2018 19:35

Few if any of the children will dance non-stop for two hours. I do hope you're joking when you say you're planning on limiting food to cheese sandwiches and crisps, your unfortunate child will never live it down.

purplestrawberry2 · 10/09/2018 19:35

My daughter finds party food the best thing about birthday parties. She would be devastated!

Witchofwisteria · 10/09/2018 19:35

Party bags are a load of shit though; if you wanna save time and money.

LittleDonkeyKong · 10/09/2018 19:36

NO way am I doing this to be 'grabby' this is her 1st birthday party and she will be 8! I'm not inviting tons of kids and to be honest I could do without loads of presents 😂 the DJ does games etc so it isn't just 2 hours of solid dancing! Guess the buffet is expected so shall it Be!

tiredandtiredd · 10/09/2018 19:37

Waste of precious dancing time my arse! You are being stingy, food is a big part of a party

ProudThrilledHappy · 10/09/2018 19:38

They are children not adults off their tits on speed at a warehouse rave
Grin
A party should include lots of junky beige food and sugar. It’s half the fun

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/09/2018 19:38

You definitely need some sort of refreshments - doesn't need to be a sit down tea - a buffet perhaps - sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls, some cakes and biscuits, fruits (strawberries and seedless grapes) quiche, pizza and several gallons of juice/ coke. They WILL want some nibbles, they WILL get thirsty.

Don't let your child be the one whose mother doesn't feed the party kids.

redcaryellowcar · 10/09/2018 19:38

I'm not sure about reasonable or otherwise but I rather like the relative calm at a party when they all sit down to eat and it all goes quiet for a few minutes.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 10/09/2018 19:40

HollowTalk Grin imagine going to a party and just getting some celery sticks?

Op if it's my money I don't understand why you wouldn't just do like a finger food style buffet? Pizza slices, sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps that kind of thing. Children will need a break from dancing, they will get bored with just 2 hours of solid disco and nothing to break it up.

keyboardkate · 10/09/2018 19:41

OP is going to provide some grub after all. As any host of a child's birthday party would. Woo hoo.

It's over now. But why it started I will never know!

Liquoricelake · 10/09/2018 19:42

YABU. I can't imagine hosting any party for children or adults and not offering some type of food. It's just basic celebration etiquette imo.

Timeisslippingaway · 10/09/2018 19:42

Perhaps do like a school disco type thing, juice, crisps etc. I wouldn't say a full on buffet woul be nessacary.
