AIBU to think paying for packing service when moving is ok

I am moving soon so getting quotes for removals. I asked for quotes and the packing service is around £200 extra (and an extra half day). Thinking this is the way forward I told DH who thought it s waste of money.
He asked his mum and brother who we saw on Saturday. They recoiled in horror, his mum open mouthed that we would even think of having this service. I couldn't quite believe this as I thought it was a no brainer and so much easier than doing it ourselves. DH even suggested moving furniture himself to which I replied I wouldn't help him and he'd have to ask his family to help him if that's what he wanted to do.
AIBU to think paying for packing is a great idea? Thoughts please as I am just shocked at negative reaction to what I thought was a very reasonable idea.

We packed for ourselves with a 4 year old and a 2 year old it took hours and hours I would never do it again.

YANBU. Moving house is a nightmare, and packing is a fucking ballache!

ANYthing you can do to make it easier for you, DO IT! Smile

As a couple of other people have said, if you pack yourselves then you usually won't be covered for breakages as it would be impossible to prove whose fault it is. For that alone I'd pay for the packers.

It's brilliant. The best is that you don't have to be 'semi-moved' for weeks as you slowly pack everything up. (Though a little sorting is a good idea just so you don't pay to move a load of crap.) Instead they arrive the day before or the day you move and box everything, so you only have 1 day of disruption and have a normal life until the day before you move.

I would always use packers now.

Only thing - they will take literally everything in a room. We left a bin full of pooey nappies and they packed that. We then spent days sniffing different boxes as the new house, trying to find the one that contained the stinking bin. Also put aside a box of stuff to take to the new house yourself, tea, coffee, kettle, snacks, nappies etc. Keep in car so won't be packed.

It's one of the most useful "luxuries" there is.

Ah yes, we also did the partial unpacking - beds, furniture reconstructed. Boxes in correct rooms. Didn't have the full unpacking service as we were moving from a 2 bed flat to much bigger house, so weren't sure where everything would be.

Even incredibly tight DH thinks it was best thing ever.

I've always assumed that it would cost a fortune so never asked for the cost. Don't think I will make that mistake again, sounds like a bargain.

We’ve paid for packing the last theee times we’ve moved.

Worth. Every. Single. Penny.

The time we moved before that I have vivid memories of packing at 3am while weeping because I had to get up for work at 6am.

Nothing has ever been broken in any of our professionally packed moves.

For those talking about decluttering. You can still do that. Go through each drawer and cupboard quickly sorting rubbish and donations. It’s much quicker and easier if you aren’t also packing.

Happily my MIL wouldn’t be so interfering as to offer a comment on this but in my opinion this is time for one of those pointed “you don’t live with your Mother, you live with me” conversations.

Like others I’d sacrifice quite a lot never to have to pack again.

I would pay for this without hesitation if I had the money spare. Packing up a house is such a pain in the arse and so time consuming, it’d be worth every penny.

KitchenDancefloor · 10/09/2018 23:40

Can we have an 'I'm a professional house packer AMA' please?

I literally do not understand how their minds works. It takes me hours to pack a suitcase for a holiday. A whole house in a day? How?!

I bet they've seen some seriously random stuff too.

How long would it take you to pack that suitcase if the things to pack were left out on the bed ready to pack ? How much if the time it usually takes is spent in working out what to pack or getting tbe things you want ready? Packs just ... pack.

I'm dyspraxic so packing (and getting everything sorted to pack) is one of my most hated tasks. My brain doesn't work that way which is why I am in awe of packers, movers and most people who walk through doorway swithout banging into them!
